She slept at a friends on friday night. Saturday morning was apparently v lethargic, hot, sore belly and sore throat. She was very sleepy all day Sat - but did have a v late night at friend's house. Yesterday pm she had a slight rash on her chest and back.

This morning her face is all blotchy/pink/puffy and her rash covers her neck, shoulders, back and front. The rash is hot and she said it was itching - but that could be because she was all hot and sticky in bed.

She won't eat because her throat hurts too much. Her neck is sore and her head hurts.

If she has tonsillitis could that cause a viral rash? would a viral rash make her face blotchy and puffy?

Have been trying to ring NHS direct since 8am but get the 'all operators are busy and you should only hold if it is a desperate emergency

call your out of hours gp, that is what NHS direct will tell you to do I'm sure.

melsy · 04/03/2007 12:07

Do you have a local out of hours gp , they often have surgeries at your local hospital ???

I can understand why your worried , its a whole gamut of symptoms. Dd1 always gets rashes with viruses , often the case.

zephyrcat · 04/03/2007 12:07

I don't know the number... when I ring the surgery, I get given the NHS number....

sorry x posts wth Kbears suggestion

melsy · 04/03/2007 12:08

phone your local hospital and they should have the details.

dinny · 04/03/2007 12:08

could be a virus that has caused secondary tonsilitis, ZC.

call your usual surgery and listen for the out-of-hours number. hoper she's better soon.

zephyrcat · 04/03/2007 12:08

melsy same here! She's had the rash before and it's always just a viral rash but bit worried about her face!

has she got a temp ? dd1 and 2 both have a virus right now and have had funny mottly rashes on their faces. Symptoms seem to be temp , hot flushes , very blocked up , little appetite, tummy pains.

dinny · 04/03/2007 12:10

where are you ZC?

foxinsocks · 04/03/2007 12:13

can you get her to drink?

sounds very nasty - tbh, and I am really not one that takes the kids to the doctor very often, if her face is puffy and she is having real difficulty swallowing, I would try and get her seen by the out of hours doc. Do you have a walk-in place you can go?

zephyrcat · 04/03/2007 12:17

I'm in Southampton. She will drink. She had some milkshake and has had a milky ice lolly thing to try and soothe her throat.

Her face is not as puffy as it was this morning but still blotchy.

Just found a walk in place so will take her there. Thanks

Difficulty swallowing is a worrying symptom and TBH i would want to see a doctor even if it meant the local WIC or A&E. I know it seems drastic, but NHS direct can be "not answering" for hours. I think it is outrageous that GP practices just leave a message to call NHS direct. I think it is dangerous and a very bad service.

Where are you, zephyrcat?

Does your local hospital have an out of hours surgery? If so I would take her there just to be on the safe side

MiaWallace · 04/03/2007 12:36

Sorry got distracted half way through posting. x posts with everyone

grouchyoscar · 04/03/2007 12:38

Phone your GP. They should have an out of hours service or a number for one. Chat it over with them. NHS direct while useful can only offer a highly generalised advice service or scare you half to death (eg. shipping me to A&E in an emergency ambulance for a simple bladder infection)

If that fails or you're still unhappy, get to A&E

foxinsocks · 04/03/2007 13:35

hope she's ok zephyr

SueW · 04/03/2007 13:44

Could be measles

Info

grouchyoscar · 04/03/2007 14:42

Zephyrcat

How is she?...Ds had simillar symptoms yesterday (lacking rash but everything else) and he's Lazarus like today.

If she has had the MMR I highly doubt measles TBH

Wholey agree with 3 frogs. What a wast of resources to fund an inadequate service that povides no real help. And homestly, only stay on line for NHS direct in a desperate emergency...If I felt I had a desperate emergency I would NOT be holding for a call centre!

Small child + sore neck + headache. I think A&E may be best TBH if you're getting no joy elsewhere.

Hope you get told she's fine and nothing to worry about. and I hope she's better soon

ZCat...please keep us posted
X to DD and {{hug}} for you

mears · 04/03/2007 15:07

Sounds a bit like scarletina which 2 of my children have had. Thraot infections can trigger a rash and antibiotics are usually needed. Don't worry about her eating - just make sure she is drinking. Keep trying NHS direct - don't know about your area but NHS 24 in my area is redirected to local GP out of hours service.
