At my wit's end with never-ending virus! Has anyone else gone through this?

So, around new year I came down with common cold symptoms, the most prominent being an utter feeling of exhaustion and need to lie in bed for a couple of days. The symptoms cleared up, I got on with life as usual, but two weeks after the first symptoms appeared, I got ill again. Feelings of breathlessness, muscle aches, dry cough, low grade fever etc.

Twice more it has happened, this latest bout being the fourth and by far the worst. I am bed-ridden, exhausted, and this time with a rattley, croaky cough which is producing phlegm. Temperature of around 99.5, exhausted.

I went to the doctors' last week to be told there was nothing they could do and that it was just a virus. I became a bit emotional as I feel so broken by this thing, struggling to get things done, and feeling like the worst mum in the world because I can't actually do anything!

It just doesn't seem to be following any accepted curve in terms of getting better, and I'm wondering if it's going to go on forever!

Has anyone any advice? Anyone been through similar symptoms??

Thanks in advance

Oh my original3 I hope so!!!!

MrsMozart · 05/03/2017 19:29

Ta folks.

Barchester I hope you can do your holidays! Take it steady building back up to it. I'm meant to be doing a twenty mile charity walk at the start of June. At the moment I couldn't walk to the end of the road.

I know it'll pass at some point. Just wish that point would hurry up and arrive!

TealStar · 05/03/2017 23:28

The aches and temperature went a few days ago, but it's taking ages to build myself back up again. Along with the mucusy cough, I'm also producing a lot of snot from my nose.

Rather worryingly I have a stabbing pain in my left rib, and it's incredibly painful to cough, laugh etc...

Not sure whether to risk going back to work tomorrow, just feel so tired whenever I exert myself!

Week 5!! How much longer.............

BarchesterFlowers · 07/03/2017 22:00

Thank you everyone, the difference in temperature outside makes such a difference to me. I have just announced to DH that I will be cycling in tomorrow 12 mile round trip. No meetings, I don't have to worry about being massively presentable.

If my asthma doesn't like it I will get a cab home Smile, it is a start, I am doing 60km one day in June, 40km a day for a week in July and 30 km a day for two weeks in August ......... and I have ridden about 35km since October half term.

Hope everyone starts to/continues to improve.

Silver17 · 10/03/2017 07:16

Morning All. How is everyone doing? Any vast improvements............

MrsMozart · 11/03/2017 19:56

It's almost gone! For now at least... Actually had a day of doing stuff. Head got a bit burny and glands are still up, but at least I'm not in bed.

Hope everyone is on the mend!

BarchesterFlowers · 11/03/2017 20:25

Much better here too but still slightly knackered.

Silver17 · 12/03/2017 09:12

Going into sixth week. Feeling depressed now!got a feckin cold!!!!!

BarchesterFlowers · 12/03/2017 19:34

I have had a relapse today started at lunchtime, I am now very hot, my cough is back, non stop, incessant coughing - bloody exhausting. I am already in bed and reckon I will be turning my light off at 8pm

Silver17 · 12/03/2017 21:12

Sounds like me.........in bed too. Really fed up of it now!

BarchesterFlowers · 13/03/2017 18:14

I have excelled myself today- at work for a long day feeling dreadful. At 1pm I had had three lots of paracetamol since midnight so no more til bedtime. I had a late mtg, 7pm. At 4 I started vomiting. I left work after the third time and drive home - one mile down the road I started vomiting while driving (very rural roads). It is everywhere I could feel it running off my skirt into the footwell. I had my fav suit on wool and cashmere plus fab coat made of same stuff (mtg wear). Everything is covered in sick, DH gave me an arms length hug, kissed me on my forehead (only sick free zone I think), ran a bath and is dealing with the mess - I am in bed - temp above 39. Bloody grim.

Silver17 · 14/03/2017 07:14

Hope your feeling better this morning.

myoriginal3 · 14/03/2017 07:23

Oh no Barchester the thoughts of cleaning puke from a car are grim... How are you now? Any better?

BarchesterFlowers · 14/03/2017 07:28

Just having a cup of tea - feel better than I did last night, thank you. I am a bit worried about my wheezy chest, I phoned my surgery before I was sick yesterday and am seeing a doctor at 930.

That was before I was sick everywhere though - would hate to think I was spreading my germs.

thehousewife · 14/03/2017 08:16

I'm so glad I read this.... this is me, I thought I was going mad or had something hideously wrong, I'm beyond fed up of it now though Sad

BarchesterFlowers · 14/03/2017 10:26

Mild pneumonia diagnosis here Sad, not a bug - I am so fed up with feeling rubbish.

myoriginal3 · 14/03/2017 10:44

Have they given you antibiotics Barchester?

BarchesterFlowers · 14/03/2017 10:46

Yes, and steroids and I have got to go back on Monday unless I feel worse in the interim.

myoriginal3 · 14/03/2017 10:48

Good. Keep a watchful eye on yourself and if you do worsen, please seek medical attention.

Unicorn81 · 14/03/2017 11:08

Feel so sorry for you. From June to August last year i had it 3 times including sinus infections. The last was the worst, signed off for a week, fever, aches, unable to sleep, severe hot and cold sweats, unable to eat for a week, lost voice, neck swollen and sorry tmi but was coughing up what looked like half an avocado every morning and throughout day. Really dark green which i read was a resulg of immune system fighting it. Doc wouldnt give me anything apart from line. Night nurse helped and when i started eating again i ate lots of fruit and veg.

Hot water with lemon and a little joney will help with cough xx

BarchesterFlowers · 14/03/2017 12:17

I will myoriginal, I am having a quiet day, watching The Book Theif with a roaring fire and DH is making me a cake. I will go into work for a few hours tomorrow if I feel a bit better.

I read your frightening story again this morning.

Silver17 · 23/03/2017 12:25

Actually managed to drive home today ( an hour's drive) as have been staying at my daughter's home, been there SEVEN weeks because of the 'bug' she wouldn't let me come home until I was more or less well. Still get tired easily but hope I'm on the mend. It has been a looooong haul! Hope all improving if not better now.

BarchesterFlowers · 23/03/2017 17:05

Wow Silver, 7 weeks is a long time.

I have got some new antibiotics and had some tests - results tomorrow. I am very tired, have had to go into work for two or three hours each day all week but am done in - off to bed actually right now.

Silver17 · 23/03/2017 18:14

Yep,seems that's the pattern. You just have to take each day at a time and rest whenever. I only work part time, was off sick for four weeks and taking my holidays now,so with a bit of luck Will be much fitter soon. Taking vitamin D, metatone tonic and codliver oil! Hope you start to feel a little better soon.
