Heart palpitations before and during period

gandalf456 · 14/02/2017 16:40

I have been having this for years. i suppose, if it were serious, I'd have dropped down dead by now.

However, I find that there are a few days per month that I just cannot function. I feel so fatigued that, if I try to do anything (including getting up and making myself a drink), my heart starts hammering and I feel lightheaded. I have tried supplements, change in diet, getting more sleep, avoiding alcohol, which has helped a bit.

Once my period is over, I get a new burst of energy. I've had several blood tests, which have come back normal. Iron was borderline once but seems to be OK now.

The GP has suggested the Pill or Minera coil (I have a copper one) but, tbh, I still had this when I was on the Pill. I;m 46 if that is relevant and I am really fed up with it now because, this week, I've had to cancel pretty much everything and lie on the sofa.

I'm not doctor but I've had palpitations which have been cyclical, before I'm due on and around ovulation. Has the gp done an ecg? That might put your mind at rest. X

mycavitiesareempty · 14/02/2017 19:55

I get ghis. It's much worse when I've had alcohol or am anaemic. GP not very interested, so I've decided I'm just really sensitive to hormonal fluctuations. Which fits as I also get hideous PMT and had PND twice as well.

CoperCabana · 14/02/2017 19:57

Cyclical palpitations are normal as I understand it (in fact I double checked that at my last heart check up as I have a heart condition). I am the same age as you and am experiencing very low energy days. In fact yesterday, I was working from home and just struggled to do anything. Today I could have happily stayed in bed all day long but unfortunately builders in the house and annoying kids prevented this. I am assuming pesky hormones.

mycavitiesareempty · 14/02/2017 19:57

Have to say though that I don't generally get a racing pulse or the fatigue you describe. Just palpitations, insomnia and a godawful mood.

gandalf456 · 14/02/2017 22:03

Well it's good to know it's probably not serious but it's driving me nuts

Hi,
I am also 46 and get this really badly before my period, mostly at night to the point of finding it really difficult to sleep because of the racing heart. To be honest, I think this is a symptom of perimenopause at this age. This has all got worse for me since I turned 45. Still regular periods but a whole bunch of really awful and bizarre symptoms, many of them cyclical.

PutneyHill · 01/02/2021 19:59

45 year old here with exactly the same symptoms.
Before, during my period my heart is thumping with overwhelming fatigue. Oddly I look really pale too, yet my ferritin, folate, vid D and all the other suspects come back bloody excellent blood test wise.
My periods are really light too because I've had endometrial ablation due to past heavy periods. It's all such a mystery but I have noted however that my blood pressure is lowish 95/65 type figures.

Positivevibesonlyplease · 03/02/2021 23:01

I also get this! I’m 52 and it’s worsened in the last 5 or 6 years. I also have relatively low, but healthy blood pressure. I’m borderline anaemic, though, need to get my bloods done again. I’ve had an ECG & that was normal, so just need to keep an eye on my iron.

I know this is a really old post but did you ever figure out why it happens? I'm experiencing the same feeling pretty awful and struggling to find answers x
MadamNoo · 06/03/2022 18:34

Me too, had ECGs, 72 hour monitoring etc and the GP finally agreed it could be a menopause symptom as I had read. No more palpitations since I started HRT.

Aries1976 · 02/04/2022 22:55

I know this is an old post but I am experiencing the same problem with palpitations leading up to my period and for about a week after it. This started since coming off the Cerazette mini pill 6 months ago after being on it for 30 years. Heart flutters and jumps sometimes on and off all day and also at bedtime when I'm laying down. Its a vicious cycle because the palpitations make me more anxious. I had an ECG 3 years ago as my heart use to race over 100bpm with anxiety so I'm now on the Atenolol beta blocker which slows my heart rate down but still having palpitations. I just wish they would go away as it makes me feel so worried that I have something seriously wrong with my heart 😒 for anyone else who is experiencing the same you are not alone and I hope you feel better soon x

Littlemissmax · 03/04/2022 09:48

I've been on propranolol beta blocker too and haven't had them for years but since having my son 6 months ago it started with my period, it got so bad I've called a ambulance. Had multiple ecgs, heart echo, chest x ray and bloods but no reason was found I'm assuming it's just hormones. Doesn't stop it being any less terrifying when they happen.
I bought a ecg watch and caught it in the act a few days ago and it detected pvcs and sinus arrhythmia and apparently they are nothing to worry about x

Aries1976 · 03/04/2022 13:03

Thanks for your comment Littlemissmax it was very reassuring and it's nice to know that you're not alone and that it's nothing serious to worry about. I have had ECG but it was 3 years ago just before I went on Atenolol, so I started to get the idea in my head that maybe the Atenolol has damaged my heart and is causing the palpitations. That is my typical over thinking with anxiety :) Just out of interest, how many days you do you have the palpitations and are they on and off throughout the day? I can have mine for 2 weeks at a time.

Pearly2022 · 03/04/2022 13:05

I'm 39 and I to have palpitations during periods and before- it's really a scary feeling. I hate it. It's got me to the point where I think omg am I having menopause early.

Hi Pearly2022

I started thinking that too as I'm 46 but periods are regular and haven't stopped so I doubt it. I have palpitations all day on and off for at least a week before period and a week after it drives me crazy and it's so scary! I didn't have this problem when I was on the mini pill but had to come off it as I'd been on it way too long and had got some liver damage from it and had huge gallstones removed. Just hope I'm not stuck with palpitations now

GeneLovesJezebel · 03/04/2022 13:30

Could be peri menopause, but I had this with low ferritin.

TAKE

magnesium, they very rarely test your levels and it has a massive impact on heart rhythm. Most people are deficient and if you are menstruating you get even more deficient right before and after as your blood is being used to line your uterus.

If you want to be extra careful, make sure you have enough potassium and calcium as well (eat a banana and two large glasses of milk a day) and that your vit d levels are in the 50s.

Magnesium should be taken before bed as it is also good at reducing leg muscle cramps and calming your body down to sleep. Take the full recommended amount

Pearly2022 · 03/04/2022 13:44

Hello! Has anyone been on Medroxyprogesterone 10mg? I'm scheduled for a D&C next week a full scraping for heavy menstrual- problong memstrual that is.. has anyone ever had this issue? Thanks for the tip SeaToSki. I eat a banana every morning with my breakfast and I drink soya milk every day which is high in calcium. I have had anxiety for around 10 years and have sinus tachycardia caused by anxiety. The palpitations are a more recent thing. I take vitamins daily as well so I guess it is linked to hormones but blood tests didn't show anything so it's a mystery!
Littlemissmax · 03/04/2022 14:08

It can't hurt to mention it to gp and get it checked out and give you peace of mind, mine come and go but can happen for a few weeks before and after period and some days it will be all day and very strong.
I second the magnesium supplements, I've just ordered some also worth looking up Sanjay Gupta York cardiology on YouTube his videos are very informative and easy to understand, calmed me down understanding it all and for my anxiety knowledge is power.
It's so hard to accept that something that feels so scary can be harmless x

I tend to avoid the GP as having the tests terrifies me and sends my heart rate sky high! Lol I already watch Sanjay Gupta's videos although if you want to speak to him he charges around £160! I have the palpitations all day for at least two weeks of the cycle which is really annoying and the more I can feel it the more anxious I get. Its like it's pausing between beats x

Have you tried a mirena coil ? Stops periods in most women.
Pearly2022 · 04/04/2022 06:14

I'm going to ask about Mirena. I heard about it.

AngelaSarah34 · 17/12/2022 00:16

Hey :) just joining the chat. My experience has been I wake up in middle of night to do a wee and then wen I lay down I start to get heat feeling in chest and then hard pounding that gets faster.. I am very low on iron and magnesium (I was taking magnesium to help with hormonal migraines but ran out) it happened last night and then this morning I got period.. it’s also happened before but I don’t remember whether it correlated with periods.. I went to hospital have had ecgs, 42hr heart monitor, heart x ray etc and all came back normal.. but it truly feels like I may be dying when it happens. It’s not an anxiety thing as I am often quite relaxed. O do feel exhausted during day pre period and lethargic. But the burning feeling at Night followed by a few minutes of intense palpitations is scary. It makes me bit scared to go to sleep 😞 does anyone else relate to these at night?

BobaTea · 30/01/2023 12:05

I've palpitations on and off all day. I really hate them. I had it checked at the hospital two weeks ago and all fine. Now waiting for the 24 hr ECG.

The palpitations stopped for two days but this morning I woke up with them again. My period started this morning so might be hormonal?

How's everyone doing now? Any improvements?
