Heart palpitations before and during period

I have been having this for years. i suppose, if it were serious, I'd have dropped down dead by now.

However, I find that there are a few days per month that I just cannot function. I feel so fatigued that, if I try to do anything (including getting up and making myself a drink), my heart starts hammering and I feel lightheaded. I have tried supplements, change in diet, getting more sleep, avoiding alcohol, which has helped a bit.

Once my period is over, I get a new burst of energy. I've had several blood tests, which have come back normal. Iron was borderline once but seems to be OK now.

The GP has suggested the Pill or Minera coil (I have a copper one) but, tbh, I still had this when I was on the Pill. I;m 46 if that is relevant and I am really fed up with it now because, this week, I've had to cancel pretty much everything and lie on the sofa.

@Littlemissmax @SeaToSki , was it magnesium taurate as recommended by Dr Sanjay that you are taking? I've been taking them for a week. How soon do you see results? Do they stop the palpitations completely?

SeaToSki · 30/01/2023 12:38

@BobaTea i take any magnesium I can find! Some is better than none. It will help, but if the palpitations are multifactorial (also caused by something else) then taking it will reduce them but not eliminate them. Its a good first step, then see what happens after 2 weeks and then reassess

BobaTea · 30/01/2023 22:21

@SeaToSki , how are you finding the magnesium yourself? Did it lessen the palpitations? Any other things you do to keep the palpitations at bay?

SeaToSki · 30/01/2023 22:34

I find the magnesium helps a lot. I also avoid caffeine, take a really good multivitamin supplement with lots of calcium, iron, vit D and B12 and hydrate with water/no artificial sweetners. I have a Kardia device which means I can do an ECG at home with my phone and see that it is just tachycardia or a few PVCs or PACs - all of which are benign for me. I was originally checked over by a cardiologist, so I do know what is a problem and what isnt a problem. The other thing that is helpful is Vasovagal Manoevers (look on google and youtube) there are several of them and you have to find the one that works for you, but they can be very effective at aborting an attack of palpitations/tachycardia.

Some people are just more prone to palpitations/tachycardia than others, its annoying but not a problem - but it is wise to be checked out by a cardiologist so you know that for sure.

BobaTea · 31/01/2023 13:13

@SeaToSki , thanks. None of the vasovagal manoevers work for me. 😥

@Aries1976 , any improvements on yours? When you have palpitations during the two weeks period, was they constant all day long?

Sorry op, for hijacking your thread. I do apologise.

Aries1976 · 31/01/2023 13:20

I seem to get the palpitations on and off so not all day constantly and not every day. Some months around my period I don't get them at all so it's random. I was checked out by a cardiologist 3 years ago and was told nothing wrong with my heart it's anxiety which causes my heart to race at times and palpitations and it's harmless. I take Atenolol beta blocker to slow heart rate down. I still get palpitations if nervous or anywhere I feel uncomfortable or claustrophobic though such as flying so am trying some natural remedies for that with the Bach flower remedies.

Age 38 and have had really bad heart palpitations since 2020. I've have a echo done, muliple monitoring and even a stress test and all they can say is it's not my heart, must be something else causing my palpitations. It's driving me crazy and my anxiety is through the roof. I am on 50mg of a beta blocker that seemed to help but not so much anymore. They will go a way from a short period of time but come back on really strong and I'm just so beyond tired of it at this point. I don't know what to do anymore, it's a constant worry and interferes with my life. I've even been to the ER and all they can say is they notice I have PVC and PAC but there is not much to be done unless my heart stops, just for me to follow up with cardiologist. It's a never ending vicious cycle. :(

PopPunkest · 29/10/2023 10:48

Pretty much the EXACT same thing with me at age 24. Started having bad palpitations at the end of 2021, to the point where I also went to the ER. Followed up with a cardiologist, was put on a beta blocker that seemed to help for a while until my PVCs came back full force. Got an echo done, wore a Holter monitor for 24 hours, was scheduled for a stress test that I never went to because I felt and still feel so hopeless. Every cardiologist I see says that my heart is healthy, but I feel like it could just stop at any time. I don’t get PVCs as bad anymore, but I usually feel like there’s weight on my chest or a tightness/burning and my heart races doing pretty much anything. I also get a feeling like I can’t get a full breath, like my body will not allow it no matter how deeply I inhale. Sick of living like this, I hope everyone out there is doing better now and hanging in there.

26 and experiencing the same issues. I had severe palpitations after giving birth to my 2nd child which gradually faded up until a few months ago where they’ve started again exactly 1 week before my period is due to start. It’s absolutely horrid as it feels like anything will set them off even standing up and getting a drink. It’s made me feel a little better finding this post and thinking it could be hormonal, especially after keeping a diary of them. I’ve just had a 72hr heart monitor on but that was taken off yesterday, palpitations started today - typical!

MellowRaven · 17/03/2024 00:06

Hi, well I started feeling palpitations while on cerezett pill just one night out the blue. A big turn in my heart, and ever since I've had episodes of palpitations, tiredness, breast tenderness, anxiety. I came off pill about November 2023. I've been to the doctor, all tests have been done at GP level and now I'm on propranolol 40mg. They help take the edgey feeling away and reduce palpitations, but my anxiety is through the roof at times.there is dietary changes I need to make, but this experience of heart palpitations and anxiety is freaking me out! I'm starting to think I've an artery blockage or something. I'm only 34!
However my palpitations are felt about two weeks after my last period, and heightened when I'm at work dealing with stress....so not sure what I can do to improve this. Hope all you guys are keeping well and riding this storm of hormones....I just hope mines is hormonal related
