Severe pain post wisdom tooth extraction

Had it removed fri, still in horrendous pain, been doing the salt water etc.
Tmi probably - but there was white bits in the wound so I scraped them out and now it smells/tastes awful Blush
A friend mentioned dry socket but it's only been 2 days? Should I watch and wait?

That's unbelievable. You've waited all day and weekend for that. What's happened to the surgery you had the extraction at? It's their duty to offer follow up care. Ring them.now or 111 again. You need it packing. That's awful.

SorrelSoup · 13/02/2017 17:08

Can you get some gauze and clove oil? I've just got some from Boots, only a few quid.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 13/02/2017 18:38

Ah I didn't think of contacting the surgery that done it. Because I'm not registered I went through Nhs direct.
I will go get clove oil and gauze, do I just put the oil inside the wound?

OP posts:
SorrelSoup · 13/02/2017 19:03

It says put a cotton bud in water then put a drop of clove oil on it. Or you can soak the gauze in it and put it over the hole. I'm not really sure but googled some stuff. There might be some YouTube videos. Perhaps you could repost in chat or AIBU with "need advice from a dentist" in the title?

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 13/02/2017 19:24

I feel bad re posting, feel like a drama llama Blush I shall look at some YouTube vids

How are you? I went to bed in tears with the pain. Something not right with the packing. I pushed it all down with an ear bud and put clove oil on it and around the gum. You're supposed to put it on the tooth but there isn't one. The pain went. I didn't sleep great but at least I had some. It's niggling again this morning. Thinking about you.

ImaLannister · 14/02/2017 07:29

I had dry socket from when I got my wisdom tooth removed. I went to the dentist and he packed it and then sealed it with antiseptic cream. Don't use cordysol or mouthwash to try treat it, I did and he told me it will do more harm than good.
After the antiseptic cream he just told me to avoid eating on that side of my mouth, which I did and it gradually went. It's caused by food getting stuck in the hole then going off! It's awful!
After a few weeks it was almost gone completely.

SorrelSoup · 14/02/2017 07:37

It's caused from a clot failing to form in the socket, so that the bone and nerves are exposed and therefore extremely painful. You can't use mouthwash as the motion of rinsing and spitting can dislodge any clot trying to form. The packing protects the exposed bone whilst your body starts the healing process again. It apparently takes 2 weeks to heal so that it's not painful.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 14/02/2017 07:48

Sorrell that's not good with the tears, I completely get that though, I don't think I've ever cried so much!
It's still the same, I'd say yesterday was the worst its been.
Taken so many painkillers I feel a bit drowsy so hoping I'll get some sleep.
You had instant relief last time? Must be horrendous not getting that this time. Flowers

Meffy · 14/02/2017 07:53

Dry socket is horrendous.... I ended up on Valium as then got nerve problems too!!!

SorrelSoup · 14/02/2017 07:55

I read on one forum how someone was on all the painkillers with no relief, then had the clove oil and we on upwards of 10 hours with no pain. I'm not really into oils and alternative things but I bought some on the spur-of-the-moment yesterday lunchtime. Lucky I did. Hopefully it'll last me until tomorrow's packing. You need to see a dentist today!

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 14/02/2017 09:00

I'm going to get some today.
I've taken; co codamol, tramadol, ibuprofen & oromorph with no relief. I'm drowsy but unable to sleep.
Poor DC are baring the brunt of it, day 6 now!
Yes I'll ring up again today.
Thank you for the tips Flowers

I agree it's horrendous, just constant!

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 14/02/2017 09:01

Meffy how are your nerve problems now?

OP posts:
ImaLannister · 14/02/2017 10:26

Can you not get emergency appointment with the dentist? That's what I did. They got me in the same day. Yer it's true not to use mouthwash as you are disturbing the clot that failed to form. But what makes the smell and taste in your mouth worse is the food that's lodged in the hole.
I found biting down on the gauze instant relief too but obvs you can't do that all the time.
I hope you get seen soon.
Not a nice thing to get at all.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 14/02/2017 18:02

Rang for emergency nhs dentist but haven't been allocated an appt because I've had 2 in 4 days.
Tomorrow I'm going to ring the dentist where I had the extraction done, will cost about £100 in taxis but I can't cope with this pain anymore I'm in agony

OP posts:
SorrelSoup · 14/02/2017 18:38

Where abouts are you? Round here you can register at any surgery for nhs; everywhere seems to have space. Make sure you get registered with somewhere. You're stronger than me, putting up with all that pain.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 14/02/2017 19:57

South Wales, there's queues for all of them :( really rural.
I don't think I've cried with pain so much.
How are you doing?

OP posts:
SorrelSoup · 14/02/2017 21:35

Not great but I won't moan. I do keep thinking about you. Off to south Wales next week as long as I'm better. Luckily dh finished work early so he put dcs to bed.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 14/02/2017 21:45

Aw no moan away I have!
Aw that's nice which part? (You don't have to say!) I hope your better then.
Aw that's good I hope you get sleep & some relief. Flowers

Packing come out. Dentists again this morning. I hope she has something encouraging to say about it getting better. I'm sleeping but waking up about 4am everyday. I can handle that though. Can't believe all this started on 1st February. I'm going to lose the whole month. We stay at a lovely place not far from Pembroke; I was going to Google dentists there.

What's your plan then? Are you going to ride it out alone? Any improvement?

SorrelSoup · 15/02/2017 05:47

I meant that I didn't want to moan to you as I'm lucky seeing the dentist every 2 days. I can't believe how tough you must be!

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 15/02/2017 07:30

Hope today goes well!
Without outing me too much that's where I'm from! (Well surrounding village) Pembroke has a fab dentist, called something like the smile practise. I'd avoid ones in Haverfordwest and Fishguard has a good one on west street.
I'm ringing the original dentist today. I can't cope another day or night with this.

OP posts:
SorrelSoup · 15/02/2017 08:15

Thanks for the information! You're really lucky to live somewhere so beautiful, but yes it's very rural. Our holiday house doesn't even have a phone signal which is why I don't want to go unless I'm on the road to recovery. Good luck for today.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 15/02/2017 09:09

It's a lovely place :) if you want any info on the area feel free to PM me.

OP posts:
SorrelSoup · 15/02/2017 09:15

Ah thanks. If I was there now I'd drive you to the dentists myself. Let me know how you get on.
