Periodontal disease... Stage 4. Anyone able to recover from this?!

Nickname1980 · 16/12/2016 18:04

Just that really. As I've posted on a couple of other threads, my periodontal disease is pretty bad. And I am getting a tooth extracted next week. And have the four quadrant cleanings booked with antibiotic injections.

Are my teeth screwed always?! Anyone recover from it?!

The dentist said they'll look ugly after as the gum shrinks and I'll get the "black triangles". I used to have a good smile! I'm totally gutted.

I didn't see this coming at all! Have been busy producing kids though. I'm so diligent at cleaning my teeth. Dentist reckoned it could be genetic.

Don't apologise Nickname -you poor thing . So sorry to hear about the abscess .

Collodial silver ( just a clear colourless tasteless liquid ) might help ...

MissyMop123 · 14/01/2017 11:43

Ahhhh Nickname, I really feel for you having to go through this. I understand that feeling of being consumed. It's rare that I'm not thinking about it. I've never had an abscess so I just don't know what to recommend. I can't believe it's reformed overnight! Do you think with the antibiotics, if you keep on taking them, it will go again?

As for not having the root scaling etc till Feb... I'm wondering if a lot of your pockets are minimal, less than 4mm? I know you can reduce them yourself if that's the case and maybe that's what the perio is waiting for?

I just feel so sorry for you and everyone else on here battling this.

MissyMop123 · 14/01/2017 11:47

I wished we all lived near the each other she we could form a support group :-)

Nickname1980 · 14/01/2017 12:42

Ahhh thanks missy and gingerroots Smile

I know - how great would a support group be? This definitely feels like one. I'm so glad to have this thread!

I am going to try that Collodial Silver for sure now!

Missy, i'm so hoping the antibiotics will cure it. I wish I'd taken them ages ago. My dentist was reluctant as I'm breastfeeding so I waited and waited.

I do have some under 4mm pockets (at the front of my mouth) but at the back I have 9s and 10s Confused.

One day we'll be able to look back on all of this and say we've all beaten it!!

MissyMop123 · 14/01/2017 14:52

I just want to give you hope about those back teeth. I'm not sure where I'm at with pocket numbers yet but 4 weeks on from my treatment and my wobbly back teeth are much, much firmer. They are firming up more by the day. I had some 10mm pockets around some of the molars. I've just had a wiggle and they almost feel back to normal firmness.

My perio hygienist has said she's had clients with gum disease in their 40's who she still sees for hygiene treatments 20 to 30 years on, and those clients have still pretty much got all their teeth (maybe lost 1 or 2 along the way). That should give us faith.

With a bit of luck your antibiotics will sort out this horrible abscess once and for all then it's only 2 or 3 weeks to your treatment. Being in limbo is miserable but a couple of weeks won't make things worse in terms of gum disease, especially as you're being really diligent with your hygiene.

When I look at your original post I think how far you've moved forward.

TheChippendenSpook · 14/01/2017 18:41

Oh Nickname that must be awful for you. Sad I second everything that Missymop said and I understand that you want your treatment to start now as you think that every day, your gums are getting worse. I was like this over Christmas.

Just consumed by it all.

I chuckled a the thought of a little support group for us all, even though it's a great idea! I can imagine all in a cafe/pub somewhere and someone asking us how we know each other.. 'oh.. We've all got gum disease!' it's not funny but it made me laugh :-)

TheChippendenSpook · 14/01/2017 18:43

I hope your antibiotics are working and I'm wondering if the reformed access is its way of healing. If that can happen.

Nickname1980 · 14/01/2017 22:16

Thank you, missy! I had a reread of my original post and you're right - I've discovered so much more about it and now even have the potential of keeping a tooth I thought I'd lose. Reading about your Perio's patients who have managed to keep their teeth 20 years on has given me so much hope!

Thechippensnook - it's so hard not to be consumed by it, isn't it? I hope you feel better since Christmas?

(And I laughed when I read your image of us sitting in a cafe with someone asking how we know each other!)

Gosh I hope so about the reformed abscess. It's shrunk a bit today... and now I have a random eye stye Confused. It's all driving me crazy! After much googling, they're caused by the same bacteria as gum abscesses (I think) so perhaps it's related. Now I just wish these antibiotics would hurry up and work!

I'm someone who is mega healthy usually. My husband always used to make jokes about how I never got ill. (Formerly!)

How is everyone else getting on?

(TheChippendenSpook - totally typo'd your username like crazy!)

OP posts:
TheChippendenSpook · 15/01/2017 11:34

Haha!! I may just have to have Thechippensnook as my username :-)

I am feeling a bit less consumed by it all at the moment but I have a good few days then I will get down about it all again. I am using Gengigel now so am clinging onto the hope that it will work!

I'm glad your access has shrunk a little. Hopefully it will be gone soon. It's interesting to know that the stye could be related. I don't usually go for weird superstitions but if I get one, rubbing my white gold ring in it does seem to work!

TheChippendenSpook · 15/01/2017 11:34

Rubbing my ring On* it

Sammymarie31 · 17/01/2017 20:21

Hey everyone! Just stumbled across this post and it really interests me....I haven't been diagnosed with periodontis but I'm pretty sure I Have it and I'm scaring the crap out of me! Since having my little girl last year my gums 'lower' are terrible! I'm literally watching them recede, one area looks like the gum is pulling away from the tooth and when I floss it moves! I'm pretty sure 2 of my lower teeth are loose but can't visably see any movement. I'm so wary of this and I won't eat or bite down using those teeth, so I'm eating everything on the side. I keep putting the dentist off due to many bad experiences! I obsess about my teeth everyday and it's literally taking over my life! :(

Sammymarie31 · 17/01/2017 20:24

Hey! Just read your post...how's things now? I'm in the same position, my lower gums are just terrible! I'm literally watching them recede, it's scaring the crap out of me! :(,

Nickname1980 · 17/01/2017 21:41

sammymarie - oh I know how you feel with that fear! (As you've prob read.) See your dentist, they'll be able to tell you right away and refer you to a Perio specialist if you need it. I'd definitely recommend seeing a specialist if they give you a choice. I suspected a problem long before I actually went. If I had a time machine I'd definitely go as soon as they even vaguely bled!

But I have actually got a lot of comfort reading what missy's Perio said about her patients who are being treated 20 years down the line and still have their teeth.

After taking antibiotics, my abscess is gone. Thank goodness! And I think (hope) my mega cleaning regieme is helping. There's hardly any blood now anyway. But I won't find out if my pockets have shrunk until I start the mega treatment in a few weeks (just had a root canal and a clean so far) and then three months after that. If that sentence even makes sense!

TheChippendenSpook - is the Gengigel working for you? Maybe it's the antibiotics, but it feels like it's doing something for me along with it, anyway! (Or maybe it's all antibiotics...). I'm not usually superstitious either but lol to trying anything!

OP posts:
TheChippendenSpook · 17/01/2017 22:08

I am so glad that your abcess has gone Smile

I have been using the Gengigel mouthwash twice to three times a day and I am hoping it's working. I have been using the mouthwash but bought the gel today so I can use it at work. I have also bought some corsodyl toothpaste. It's brown and tastes awful!!

Since my dentist convinced me that my gums can take being brushed properly, I have been using a soft brush and brushing a bit harder but my gums hurt so much afterwards Sad

How long have you been using the Gengigel? I bought it last Thursday so it may be too soon to tell of it's working for me.

TheChippendenSpook · 17/01/2017 22:09

Definitely go to your dentist Sammymarie

You will start to feel a bit better for going and if you need treatment or advice, you can start the ball rolling so to speak!

Nickname1980 · 17/01/2017 22:22

TheChippendenSpook - I've been using the gel for maybe a month, twice a day, but the mouthwash for only about a week. And my gums aren't as sore as they were before I started. Still are a bit though. So it may be helping?! It's so hard to tell!

My hygienist also gave me this soft brush for my gums. I'll take a picture of it and post tomorrow so you can see it if that helps? I'll look to see the brand name.

I hear you on the hurting - my dentist said that those were the bits that prob needed it most Sad. But it's almost unbearable to brush on the painful sections of gums!!

OP posts:
Nickname1980 · 18/01/2017 08:41

Overnight, my dreaded abscess came back! Antibiotics and root canal clearly didn't work on it! Sad

I'm not sure who to call - my general dentist or my perio? I wish this root planing had started already 😫

OP posts:
TheChippendenSpook · 18/01/2017 10:14

Oh that's really really awful about your abcess. It's one thing after another isn't it? You poor thing!

The Gengigel eludes on the box I think that it can take time to work. It says use for 3 to four weeks so it sounds like it's working for you Smile I will keep up with it as I was nearly crying from the pain of brushing my teeth. I don't understand it though because I always brush my teeth twice a day. Maybe I wasn't using my electric toothbrush properly at all because my gums didn't hurt with it.

Did you work out who to call about your abcess?

MissyMop123 · 18/01/2017 15:07

Nickname- I was really hoping for that abscess had gone by now. I can't believe the antibiotics didn't work. I guess it's back to the dentist?

I have to admit I've transferred all my dental care over to the perio specialist place. After my experience with an NHS dentist for 10 years my trust has gone. He didn't even show me how to use interdental brushes properly or advise I needed to see a hygienist.

I'm literally at the perio's now about to get a filling. The last time I needed a filling I was 14 years old! That really tells me my body is out of whack somewhere. The positive is that it's for a tooth we thought could need extracting but it feels rock solid now.

If I could turn back the clock 10 years as soon as I knew I had gum disease I would have booked in to see a perio. At least I know to keep a really close eye on my kids' teeth and gums now.

TheChippendenSpook · 18/01/2017 15:18

I hope your filling goes OK! I too have swapped dentists. I knew something was wrong with my teeth and my dentist didn't offer any advice whatsoever. Except to tell me I needed a £50 cleaning treatment that was done by him with no explanation as to why.

I even went for an appointment as I was worried about recession and he told me that my gums were fine!

TheChippendenSpook · 18/01/2017 15:20

It's great that your tooth is now solid as well Smile

MissyMop123 · 18/01/2017 16:47

So I've had the cavity 'packed'. It's in a really odd place. He said packing can last for years and years. It was painful to have done but it feels better than it has done in months.

I'm sure there are some great dentists around. I guess I didn't get lucky. Maybe it's hard to identify gum disease in the initial stages?

ChippendenSpook - at least your gums aren't too bad. It sounds like it's contained to one place.

TheChippendenSpook · 18/01/2017 16:52

I'm glad that you have been packed Smile Oh mine definitely isn't in one place. I have just been fixated on the front because that's the bit that faces the world!
