Painful calf

Afternoon all

I had a suspected blood clot, almost 2 years ago, when i was pregnant with DD.

I had a venogram, scan and was declared blood clot free. However, my twin sister has had 2 spontaneous DVTs and my mum has had one.

I was put on low dose aspirin for the remainder of my pregnancy, and never told what was wrong with my leg

I had gone to the docs ,with a hot , swollen, calf, unable to bend my leg and foot properly to walk....my right calf measured bigger than my left..but it was not a clot

anyhoo, i still have intermittent pain in the same calf, and today it is really quite bad. it does really hurt. am a bit scared actually.

the pain is always the same place and varies in how painful...so, tell me it is just a bruise or a spasm please !

it is half term and i have not got time to go to the docs !

was your hot swollen calf 2 years ago?
or is it looking like that now? or just painful?

sunnywong · 11/02/2007 13:51

I'm sorry you are feeling unwell
but I cannot help feeling somewhat cheated as I read this thread as Pauline Calf and was hoping for a bit of a giggle

lulumama · 11/02/2007 13:52

it was , yes...just now it sore, but not hot, don;t know if it is swollen without measuring!

lulu, if you bend your foot forward, does your calf hurt?

DarrellRivers · 11/02/2007 13:55

DVTs are difficult to diagnose without a scan.
More at risk if pregnant( you are not so less likely) but you have quite strong family history.
In your favour of it not being DVt is the fact that you had more sympotms and risk factors last time and it was negative, but i always tend to be suspicious as they can be tricky to pick up.
You should be able to get a blood test callled a d-dimer done at a+e which will give you some reassurence that it is not DVT if it is negative.
Speak to your OOH gps or pootle down to A=E , sorry , for peace of mind

lulumama · 11/02/2007 13:56

if i point it down, it hurts, if i bend it up , it hurts too! feels quite tight

OP posts:
lulumama · 11/02/2007 13:57

they refused me a d-dimers last time, despite me asking for it, as the other tests were clear

my sister was very suspicious it was a clot , as my symptoms were so similar to what she had

hard to get to docs until tonight as DH at work and no family near and no-one to watch the kids

Gobbledigook · 11/02/2007 13:57

I'd go to A&E - if you put your leg out straight and bend the foot toward you and it's painful, that can be a sign of a DVT so I'd go and get checked out.

PITA but you really need treatment if it is.

lulumama · 11/02/2007 13:58

see, i knew this would happen! i know i should get checked !!

OP posts:
SpaceCadet · 11/02/2007 14:00

i would go to a and e, better to be safe than sorry, you will have a blood test which if positive can indicate a clot, you will then possibly be given a test which involves having something similiarv to a blood pressure measurement done on your calf, if both tests are positive, you will have a scan done on the deep veins in your leg, if this indicates a clot then they may or may not carry out a venogram.
you have a family and previous history so you do need to err on the side of caution,

DarrellRivers · 11/02/2007 14:01

Same here, you always want people to say not to worry, stay at home, but deep down you know it needs checking.
I think our Guidelines do a d-dimer on most people who have a slightest suspicion of DVT and may be highlight your family history. They should be able to take the blood test and then you can go home and you can phone later for result.
You could always take all the junior lulumammas to A=E and make their afternoon extra special

lulumama · 11/02/2007 14:03

Good compromise
Poor local A+E deprived of cheering visit from local celeb lulumamma and infants

lulumama · 11/02/2007 14:06

snoooooooort !! mind you if i turned up in my dressing gown ( which is slightly grey as i cleaned out the fireplaces this morning!!) with my children, i reckon i would be in and out in 20 minutes !

And if you let the littlest lulumamma stand on the nurses station and help out the triage nurse, you could be even faster

lulumama · 11/02/2007 14:09

thank you for your advice x

OP posts:
lulumama · 11/02/2007 16:28

Is increasing pain more likely or less to be a DVT?

OP posts:
Snaf · 11/02/2007 16:32

Thought you were going to A&E?!

lulumama · 11/02/2007 17:13

i can;t till DH gets home, snaf, he is not home until 6 ish

if i have a d-dimers, will i get the result tonight?

OP posts:
SpaceCadet · 11/02/2007 17:42

d-dimers usually come back within an hour or two

lulumama · 11/02/2007 17:44

even in the evening , spacecadet?

OP posts:
SpaceCadet · 11/02/2007 17:45

yes lulu-the labs are always open!

lulumama · 11/02/2007 17:46

really? sort of thought it was a 9 - 5 thing

becasue i am not going to go to a and e if i can;t find out tonight what the score is, might aswell wait til tomorrow morning!

OP posts:
SpaceCadet · 11/02/2007 17:47

although it largely depends on how busy they are in the labs, but yes they usually come back within 2 hours max
