We have tried our usual sudacrem, and Drapoline to no effect. We are also giving him plenty of air time, despite the inevitable accidents (something has upset his stomach, hence the soreness I think)
Any way, what can you recommend please.

A trip to the docs to rule out a secondary thrush infection (make them take a swab!!!) and washing in water with cotton wool or camomile tea (no wipes they sting even the sensitive ones) and Metanium. This stuff is magic. Egg white can work as a barrier I have heard but I haven't tried it.
My sympathies. We went through it with both dd's every time they were teething. It was awful .

frenziednester · 08/02/2007 19:51

metanium didn't work for me, but thick application of vasogen did (can get it in LLoyds or ask for your chemist to order it for you.)

Erybobber · 08/02/2007 19:51

I swear by kamillosan and my sister-in-law found it worked on her daughter who had been prescribed anti-fungals and anti-bacterials cos she got such bad nappy rash. Our local tescos sells it and so does boots.

Miaou · 08/02/2007 19:52

Is is definitely just nappy rash or could he have an infection in there? Might be worth taking him to the GP to see if he needs some antibiotic cream on there. When ds's nappy rash wouldn't clear up with sudocreme and metanium, sure enough he had an infection (impetigo in fact).

babyboo1and2 · 08/02/2007 19:52

a cream in a yellow tube called Metanium - works a treat - in Boots costs about a fiver

petrified · 08/02/2007 19:55

Metanium didn't do anything for DS I swear by Bepanthen we use it every change and havent had a rash since.

Overrun · 08/02/2007 20:17

Thats great, some really useful suggestions. i will try a different cream tommorrow. I will take him to gps if it doesn't clear up, he has had thrush before, but you could see red spots, which he doesn't have now, so it seems different.
Thanks so much for your responses, its horrible to see them in pain isn't it? Oh yes, I will switch to cotton wool and water, silly really that I didn't think of that

i have only ever used bepanthen on both ds's and it is fantastic. even now ds2 who is 2.9yo (and very nearly dry) will say "need cream sore winkie" and he will get it from the cupboard.

moondog · 08/02/2007 20:23

Oh how awful.
I wouldn't clean at all.Anything dragging over his poor little bottom will hurt.
Don't clean after a weey nappy and if it's poo, just sit him in warm water.

In my ds's nursery (owned by ex mw) they sit them in a tepid salted bath which always works wonders.

kasdie · 08/02/2007 20:24

get canastan cream when my dd2 get really bad n/rash i put a bit of that on by morn its gone

Nemo2007 · 08/02/2007 20:26

put metanium or kamillsan on first then put sudocrem over the top works wonders for DD when she is really bad. Hope he is better soon as its not nice.

Overrun · 08/02/2007 20:29

Thanks Moondog and Kadie. Moondog, I am a bit worried that if I get him to sit in water and it hurts, he wont sit in the bath, as this is what happened with dt2.
Dt2 is usually the one who gets nappy rash, and he is quite sweet as he walks in this bandied legged way like a cowboy punctuating each step with an "Ow!"
Dt1, is a different kettle of fish, this breath holding is a nightmare, as although we know why he does it, it is still so awful when it happens

Nemo2007 · 08/02/2007 20:35

must admit DD1 hates to be put in water or even bathed when she has bad bad nappy rash.Wha tI hate is the fact i t just appears, no warning, one change they are fine next it is raw

Skyler · 08/02/2007 20:36

I used to soak water up in the cotton wool and squeeze it out over dd's nappy area to try to wash the area as I agree with MD if it is that bad anything on his skin will hurt. You may notice a huge diff just stopping with the wipes. If I am cleaning dd2 and have a cut on my hand the wipes make it start bleeding again and it stings like hell .
I was even given sterile water sachets by the doc .

I know what you mean Nemo, I xposted with you before btw, thats why I didn't reply to you.
Our policy of air time back fired on us spectacularly (excuse the pun) when he shat all over his freshly washed grobag and pillow

have you changed the nappies at all..sometimes if in disposables just a different type of same brand can irritate.

colditz · 08/02/2007 20:40

d4efinately stop the wipes - even when i blow my nose with them, if the skin is the slightest bit sore, they sting like bloody hell.

lukewarm water out of the kettle with a little bit of salt should help - also luke warm chamomile tea.

colditz · 08/02/2007 20:41

Which wipes do you use? some are more stingy than others

Overrun · 08/02/2007 20:42

He has got a bad cold, so that might have affected him, am also wondering if the cough medicine I have been giving him or the medised at night might have upset his stomach?
Dont normally give cough medicine but he is so tired i thought it was worth a go. He has had medised before, but not very often

Johnsons are AWFUL IME. I used some of my MIL's to clean my face once. Ow ow ow.

Overrun · 08/02/2007 20:44

I wont use the wipes any more, they are sensitive ones, but I agree in hindsight I should have stopped them sooner.
He is asleep now, so will put all my new ideas in practice tomorrow.

OP posts:
moondog · 08/02/2007 20:44

no wipes!!!
The worst possible thing!

Overrun · 08/02/2007 20:45

My ds used to get the runs when he had a cold - think it must have been all the mucus. So probably that rather than the medicine (although do read the info leaflet inside the packet to check). Sympath.
