worried about dd, 20 months

I posted earlier on the behaviour / development board as I thought my dd might have had her first 'tantrum'. She's 20 months and today from waking was very edgy and then lost it later and then threw up. She hasn't been sick again but she's been literally losing her rag over anything and everything which is not like her at all. She's not particularly hot or sniffly. The only thing she's complaining of (in words) is constantly telling me that she's 'sore' when I'm changing her nappy and when she's sitting down. She won't let me look too closely as she's getting very upset when I try to clean her when I change her nappy. But from what I've been able to see, she doesn't look dreadfully sore, not as bad as she's looked sometimes with nappy rash. She's also been off her food for a couple of days but much more so today - no breakfast or lunch and just a bit of milk to drink and a bit of pasta for tea. Does this suggest anything to anyone?

constipated? thrush? tummy bug?

sorry not much help am i?

strangerthanfiction · 12/06/2004 22:10

Not constipated, can't see any thrush. Tummy bug maybe but she was only sick once in the middle of manic crying which can sometimes cause some vomiting can't it? It seems to be around the genitals rather than the anus that she's complaining of being sore by the way.

I'd give Calpol and try to just wait it out.

misdee · 12/06/2004 22:11

well if it is thrush, it can make her sick and reluctant to eat, and it can affect both 'ends' as it were. poor little girl. hope she feels better tomorrow.

strangerthanfiction · 12/06/2004 22:24

how could I look out for thrush? I mean what physical signs? Depending on how she does tomorrow I'm going to take her to gp on Monday.

OP posts:
misdee · 12/06/2004 22:27

dd1 only had thrush in the mouth, her tongue was coated white. but i know mieows dd1 had thrush in her bottom area recently, her gp dx it. best thing to do is to take her to the gp on monday if she isnt better, or tomorrow try to take her to a walk-in clinic or get an out of hrs gp to see her. i think u can give natural live yoghurt which may help, but give me a moment to look that up first.

strangerthanfiction · 12/06/2004 22:31

Dd had thrush in the mouth ages ago when she was still b/f. I had it too on my nipples. OUCH!!

I was wondering if it might be something like cystitis. She did a wee on the floor this evening before her bath and as she was weeing she was telling me it was sore.

OP posts:
misdee · 12/06/2004 22:33

live yoghurt wont do any harm as far as i can read. might be worth a try.

its a nightnare when they are young as they can tell u much about whats wrong.

strangerthanfiction · 12/06/2004 22:39

Thanks misdee. Yes, you're right. Dd's just at that age when she's beginning to speak more and more but it's still so rudimentary when it comes to something like this.

I'm not quite sure it sounds like a tantrum because she is complaining of being sore and get upset if you get near the area As far as I know the ability of children to make up stories/tell lies doesn't start until they are 3-4 yrs old...

ChicPea · 12/06/2004 22:49

My dd of 21mths has just had hand, foot and mouth where she had cold like symptom, off of her food, with spots on buttocks (hated me changing her nappy) and generally not herself. Started being very off with me on the Saturday and not her usual jolly self. Then the blisters on finger tips and in between toes started on the Tuesday. Apparently, there is a toddler epidemic at the moment. She also developed a high temperature for about 4 days for which the GP recommended Ibuprofen.
Hopefully, your dd doesn't have this, but if she does, look out for the blisters. Also, they lose their appetite with this due to the illness and also because the sore throat/mouth ulcers make eating painful, esp acidic fruit and rough stuff like toast. My dd was happy with yoghourt.

poppyseed · 12/06/2004 22:51

Might be a tummy bug or a water infection brewing although she hasn't got a high temp you say? Our DD had an infection and the symptoms sound the same - don't worry about the not eating bit, but I would encourage her to drink. Hope she is OK soon.

Angeliz · 12/06/2004 23:02

Hope she's feeling better soon!

Thanks everyone. Dd slept ok and seemed much better for the first couple of hours this morning but then wouldn't eat any lunch at all again, just drank a bit of juice and has been very weepy and irritable again. She's sleeping now.

ChicPea, we had hand, foot and mouth about 7 months ago and I think you can only get it once? If not I'll know what to look out for this time if she gets any spots. Actually she has a rash on both hips where her nappy goes and she's scratching away at it today but it doesn't look like the same spots as h,f&m. It may be heat related. And no, there's no fever or really any signs of illness except for her mood and her saying she's 'sore.' She'll barely let me near her nappy now to change it though it really doesn't look very sore at all so I don't have a clue really what's going on. But what little intuition I have tells me something's not right. How I wish she could speak a bit more!

Just bumping this one last time as I'm still a bit confused as to what to do / think. Dd hasn't eaten a thing all day though is drinking fine, milk, water and juice. Should I take her to the GP or am I being paranoid?

OP posts:
Tissy · 13/06/2004 20:28

stf, sounds very much like a urine infection, if she's sore when weeing. Take her to GP's tomorrow, meantime give her plenty of (non-acidic) drinks- milk or water.

elliott · 13/06/2004 20:31

AGree with Tissy - hope you get sorted soon.

strangerthanfiction · 13/06/2004 20:42

Thanks Tissy and Elliott, (almost sounds like Missy Elliot!). I'm leaning towards thinking maybe a urine infection. If it was cystitis, do you know how they test for that? I can't begin to think how I could get dd to provide a urine sample ...

OP posts:
Lisa78 · 13/06/2004 20:51

They probably won't test for it, stf, they will probably just give her an antibiotic designed for urine infections in general
Give her as much water to drink as she will have in the meantime

babysteffee · 13/06/2004 21:13

My dd is 20 months too and had similar symptoms last week... irritable, not wanting nappy changed even when she'd only whad a wee in it, off her food, and also flustered and not sleeping.

I took her to the doctors who said it was mild heatstroke. He said to put a soakened flannel (cold) on her face and hands every so often, and give her plenty drinks of water.

Hope your dd feels better soon.

maomao · 13/06/2004 21:13

stf, you may want to check out this link about uti

Let us know how it goes at the GP. Hope she feels better soon!

strangerthanfiction · 13/06/2004 21:25

Thanks for the link maomao it was really helpful. I'll bear it in mind when I take dd to the GP tomorrow.

babysteffee, that had never crossed my mind. Do you know how they get mild heat stroke? Is it from being in the sun too long? I've been trying to keep dd out of it as much as possible but she's a devil for chucking her sun hat on the floor. Is your dd better now?

ChicPea · 13/06/2004 21:53

Strangerthanfiction, sorry to read you have already experienced hand, foot and mouth. I read somewhere that kiddies can catch it again but who knows? Anyway, the point is you will recognise this one. Looked at the link Maomao set up - very impressed - and this is a new one for me. Didn't know kiddies could even get something like this. The more we know, the sooner we can nip things in the bud. Hope your GP comes up with the answer.
