Fishy smell in daughters nose

Disgusting title I know! Sorry!
Dd (coming up to 4) has had a cold on and off for a month at least - not a bad cold as such, but a persistent one.
I have recently noticed that the gunk up her nose smells of fish, which is disgusting. The gunk itself is yellowy/green.
I tried flushing out her nose with some special sea water spray and got a lot of the muck out, but it still smells fishy. Do you think it could be infected?

could she have stuck something up there?

Greensleeves · 31/01/2007 21:31

Has she been snorting prawns?

IntergalacticWalrus · 31/01/2007 21:32

rofl Greeny

lulumama · 31/01/2007 21:33

infection for sure....needs ABs ,,,

Mistymoo · 31/01/2007 21:33

Agree with TaylorsMummy. My DH's cousin had something stuck up his nose for years apparently (a button I think) and his breath and nose smelt terrible for years until they found it!

Spidermama · 31/01/2007 21:33

Does she have omega 3 supps? They smell fishy. So does hemp oil.

kittylette · 31/01/2007 21:34

my little sis had this when 3, turns out i'd put bits of rolled up wallpaper up her nose in her sleep

they pulled out a 4 inch piece

harpsichordcarrier · 31/01/2007 21:36

yes I think she might have something stuck up there. take her to the doctors

Sexonslightlypuffylegs · 31/01/2007 21:38

Blimey, that was a quick response! Defo no prawns shoved up there, and not taking omega 3. I think a trip to the Docs then. Cannot see anything stuffed up there, and tbh she normally tells me if she has - the monkey.

Thanks ladies.

Thank you Thank you Thank you.
Sprayed some more stuff up her nose and got her to blow like a good 'un, and she blew out a ball of something - bread? It smelt awful!!!
So, hopefully that will be the end of it.

Thanks for the advice all.

Ahh the poor little thing, glad you found out the problem!

This happened to my neice a very long time ago.She kept getting nose bleeds & her breath was so bad it contaminated the whole room, until her mum lay her back & looked up her nose & saw something small. She got tweezers & started to pull out, she had managed to stuff part of a bath sponge up it. (the foam type) !

YUK!

lulumama · 01/02/2007 11:41

glad she is ok !

Jaamy · 01/02/2007 16:29

Oooh, glad she is ok. My DD2 has had similarly fishy breath. Had put it down to her cold but now you got me thinking. Off to stare up her nostrils, armed with tweezers. She's only 15mths so no chance of getting her to blow her nose.

Sexonslightlypuffylegs · 01/02/2007 16:39

Jaamy, Good Luck! I coudn't see anything up dd's nose tbg. However, I think the spray that I used obviously loosened the ball of whatever it was and made it a bit easier to get it out.

The spray I used is called sterimar. My dad got it for me and it is fab.

Mistymoo · 01/02/2007 16:42

Glad it's out.

My dd put a pea up her nose - she did tell us thankfully. DH tried to blow it out - no success. Trip to Drs where nurse tried to get it out with scissors!!!!!

She had no joy that way and we were being sent to A&E 25 miles away when DH tried blowing it out again and POP out it came.

Jaamy · 01/02/2007 18:40

Can't see anything.

Sexonslightlypuffylegs - can you get that sterimar over the counter from a chemists?

Jaamy, my dad gave it to me. I will ask him were he bought it. I expect he bought it via the internet.

I do think it is great, and in fact was watching something on tv tonight to do with babies being bunged up and feeding problems, and they recommended using a saline spray to clear the passages!

Also really good for sinusitis sufferers which I have been getting a bit through this pg.

I'll come back to you tomorrow hun.

Thanks Sexonslightlypuffylegs. Fishy breath still there despite cold having dried up.

Have seen the little saline drops but would I need the spray to shift anything that might be lodged up there. Will try the drops.

Sexonslightlypuffylegs · 03/02/2007 21:27

Jaamy, the thing with the spray is that it goes further up the nose than the drops as it is like an aerosol.

Does your lo's nose smell fishy as well?

Anyway, try it and then if no change/nothing comes out then take lo to the docs.

Good luck.

Jaamy · 04/02/2007 19:37

Thanks. Still no sign of anything. Nose and breath both smell fishy. Even DH has commented. Will take to docs this week though he'll prob look at me like I'm mad - sure he thinks I'm a hypo!

Cheers!

Sexonslightlypuffylegs · 06/02/2007 21:14

Jaamy, how is your little one? Been to the docs?

Jaamy · 07/02/2007 22:02

Hi Sexonslightlypuffylegs

Phoned docs for appt and can't get one til mon so will take her then. Smell seems to have got a bit better, though. What's the bet it will have completely gone by Monday...we shall see.

PhilG · 07/02/2007 22:20

Sterimar is from chemist over the counter. Very good if you have a cold let alone a foreign object up your hooter.
