Fishy smell in daughters nose

Disgusting title I know! Sorry!
Dd (coming up to 4) has had a cold on and off for a month at least - not a bad cold as such, but a persistent one.
I have recently noticed that the gunk up her nose smells of fish, which is disgusting. The gunk itself is yellowy/green.
I tried flushing out her nose with some special sea water spray and got a lot of the muck out, but it still smells fishy. Do you think it could be infected?

Thanks PhilG. Will try chemist again. Maybe a different one. Assistant looked at me a bit strangely last time!

Does she have problems with tonsils or adenoids? They can often be the source for bad breath.

Jaamy · 08/02/2007 11:01

Apparently adenoid problems in DH's family but no sign of anything with DD2...actually, what would the signs be in a 16 month old?

Apart from the pong she seems perfectly ok.

Have been unable to get to chemist due to snow but will get out first chance I have.

Please don't ever try to remove anything from your child's nose yourself. The danger is that you'll push whatever it is even further up and cause damage. Just take them up to Aand E and have it removed professionally.

DD stuck a raison up her nose when she was 4 and the Ears, Nose and Throat specialist eventually got it out with a tiny hand held suction device...I'd have never gotten it out myself.

I was lucky in that whatever it was that dd stuck up her nose was quite small. It must have been stuck high up as well, as I couldn't see anything when I looked up her nostril. After using the sterimar for a couple of days and getting dd to blow hard, it came out. I guess getting a young child to blow though is v difficult (dd is nearly 4), and had this not worked, I would have gone to the docs for sure.

Problems with adenoids can manifest as snoring and nasal sounding speech.

Jaamy · 08/02/2007 17:15

Snores a little but not often - not noticed speech being nasal.

Summer111 - Don't worry I have no intention of sticking anything up DD2's nose. If I can't see anything I'm not going to be able to get it out. Not even sure if there's anything up there just saw this thread and thought "Mmmmm...that sounds familiar"!
