WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 06/07/2016 22:21

Hello again, and welcome to our 56th thread. Some of us have been here ages and others have just joined. I hope you've all made it safely over to the new thread.

An extra special welcome to anyone who is lurking and feeling a bit shy. We are all quite friendly and we definitely don't bite, so please do say hello if you'd like to.

All are welcome here. We started off as a breast cancer support thread many years back, but all cancer types are welcome and at any point in the "journey", even if you haven't yet been diagnosed. We have all had different experiences but there's almost certainly someone here who will understand how you are feeling.

Our previous thread is here.

I have started the new thread a little early, and I will explain why in a moment.

Glad you are feeling a bit better today Leslie. Hope the sun is out for everyone it's beautiful here today Smile

EtTuTuttiFrutti · 24/08/2016 12:12

Morning All. (Under) Wound isn't healing well I don't think Leslie. It's because of the heat/sweating irritating it .... so I've bought an industrial sized quantity of Dead Sea Salt (by accident). It was on offer and looked small on the screen. Grin. Bit surprised when a bloody big bag of the stuff arrived last night. Not clear on my logic either. Sweat being mainly composed of salt Hmm. Love to everyone.

chewingawasp · 24/08/2016 12:53

Glad you're feeling better Leslie. I had a better sleep than usual and feel quite lively today. Even made myself a full English brekkie Blush. The heat is a bit wearing though so I will probably hit a slump in a few hours Smile
Tutti - Hope you enjoy floating in the bath and that the wound heals quickly.

mintyneb · 24/08/2016 17:24

Hooray for big sleeps and feeling brighter. Great news chewing, fingers crossed the last remaining tests come back clear.

tutti, enjoy your salty baths and I hope they do the trick.

leslie I have to echo what mrs has said, you are so welcoming to everyone and it is rare for you not to pick up on what each of us is going through.

I met the breast surgeon for my histology results today. So it's pretty much good news - lymph node they biopsied was clear (so that's 2 they've checked in the last 2 years) - and the area of trouble was largely DCIS. however, there were 2 small areas of grade 3 IDC showing the same receptors as originally. Because there was more DCIS than invasive cells they feel that this was probably present 2 years ago but may not have calcified at that point and was therefore undectable. This in itself throws up all sorts of questions and concerns but my main worry , as it turns out is theirs too, is that HER2+ IDC could appear within only months of me finishing a year of herceptin. I suspect this isn't something the team have seen much of before and the surgeon did hint that the oncologist was really trying to consider what the best course of action would be. But the short story is that they're likely to recommend further systemic treatment and I've got an appt with the oncologist next weds.

I think I could cope with herceptin again (Although I have to have it via IV infusion - long story and my veins are now rubbish) as the side effects were OK ish but I'm not keen on anything else. Will just have to wait till next week to find out more.

Boy it's been hot here the last couple of days. Hope those of you able to have been enjoying this blast of summer and those not able to have been able to get comfy.

Thinking of you in particular sleepy

mintyneb · 24/08/2016 17:29

Oh and the one piece of great news I had from the surgeon was that she wouldn't expect me to peel off and replace micropore tape every day for the next 4 weeks as I'd been told! She only wants me to change it as and when it starts coming off by itself :). So relieved as I was begin to get in a real tizzy every time I stepped in the shower

Mysillydog · 24/08/2016 19:15

Hi minty
I'm really sorry to hear that they found invasive cells on the histology report. I know that it can be quite difficult to get herceptin without chemo because they are licensed together. However I also know that doctors can and do tweak how drugs are delivered. I wonder if you would qualify for perjeta in addition to herceptin? I know it's not typically given on the NHS for a primary but some people are given it for early stage bc.

I'm going for a routine oncology appointment tomorrow and dh is going to be around to deal with the aftermath of GCSE results. Good luck to everyone with dc getting results and I hope everyone gets the grades they need.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 24/08/2016 20:35

Good luck tomorrow for the appointment and GCSE results Mysillydog

minty sorry you're likely to need treatment. I hope they have a reassuring plan for you on Wednesday. And good news about the tape :)

And thank you, I do try to reply to everyone but I know I sometimes miss people. I feel very responsible as one of the oldies, especially without Lily, who always felt like a guiding force Sad

Tutti enjoy your Dead Sea salt Grin it sounds very luxurious. I hope the irritation stops soon though

mum I hope you've been enjoying the sunshine :) I have been hiding indoors as it's too hot for me!

chewing very impressed at cooking breakfast in this heat. Did you do fried bread? I'm veggie, but I love a bit of fried bread

I've managed to go the whole day without a nap Shock though I haven't really done anything much

Love to all, especially Sleepy and family Flowers

OP posts:
chewingawasp · 24/08/2016 21:32

Sorry to hear your news minty but pleased about that pesky micropore tape.
Silly I wish I had an appointment rather than being at home awaiting results tomorrow. It will be stressful - good luck to your dc.
Leslie I don't like fried bread I'm afraid. Too greasy for me Grin. You may be an oldie here but I imagine you as a youngster Smile

mrsrhodgilbert · 24/08/2016 22:01

Minty, it sounds like mixed news and I'm not familiar with the details but I hope they get a plan sorted for you quickly.

Leslie, sounds like you're feeling a bit stronger today.

Good luck to all those expecting GCSEs tomorrow. I'm not enjoying the heat, it has no business being in Yorkshire, roll on Autumn.

I've been having terrible stomach trouble with the anti inflammatories, naproxen, that the dr prescribed for my shoulder. I can't tolerate them for another day, I'll have to call the surgery tomorrow about it. Gas anyone here taken them?

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 24/08/2016 22:03

Shock no fried bread?!

I am indeed on the younger side. In fact I'm not entirely sure, but I think I am the youngest on the thread. Now of course lots of outraged youths will be delurking Grin

Good luck to your DC tomorrow too Star do you have to go to school for results or is it done online now?

OP posts:
mintyneb · 24/08/2016 22:05

Thanks all. mysilly the surgeon didn't really want to venture too far into the world of oncology so no drugs were discussed. I'd forgotten that herceptin was meant to be given alongside chemo though :(, just couldn't bear the thought of more chemo. What worries me is that I might be faced with having to make the decision as to whether to have the treatment. Last time there was no decision to be made as it was very clear cut what had to happen and I went along with what the team said.

Hope your appt goes well and that the GCSE results are good!

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 24/08/2016 22:07

Cross-posted with you mrsrhod sorry you're suffering Sad I hope they can help.

Are you on lansoprazole or anything similar? I used to take naproxen for period pains and it was covered in warnings about stomach problems. Hopefully they can give you something to help. Is it managing the pain at all?

OP posts:
mrsrhodgilbert · 24/08/2016 22:18

Hi Leslie, yes I've got the other tablets to protect my stomach. Evidently I'm not tolerating it very well at all but my shoulder is pain free. Not much use though if the pain has just moved to my abdomen.

chewingawasp · 24/08/2016 22:31

Sorry to hear about your stomach pain mrsrhod. Hope you can get an alternative that suits you better.
I will be awaiting an email or call from the Head about the results tomorrow (very small school). Ds is incredibly anxious but has a place already confirmed at a good school which is a relief. He puts himself under more pressure than he needs to so it's definitely going to be difficult tomorrow. I'm hoping for a good night's kip so I am strong enough to handle it. Night all.

1234hello · 24/08/2016 22:51

Hi Leslie, thank you for saying hello! I am very well thank you. I lurk because someone very close to me has cancer, heartbreakingly not considered curable. Also far too young to be facing this. Sad

Well done all for supporting each other and trying to find some joy in the small things, that perhaps aren't that small after all. You all seem such lovely people. I send positive vibes to everyone and I'd put money on other lurkers doing the same! Smile

mumto2andnomore · 25/08/2016 00:04

Minty it does sound like mixed results but I'm sure once you know your treatment plan it will seem a little easier. I would rather be told rather than have to make a decision too

Mrs Rhod sorry you are in pain :( hope it gets sorted soon

Leslie I'm sure you are the youngest !

Thanks for the kind words 1234 Smile

Good luck for anyone waiting for GCSEs such a stressful time

EtTuTuttiFrutti · 25/08/2016 06:50

Hoping everyone had a reasonable night given this heat.
MrsHodge and Chewing everything crossed here for the GCSE results.

royalmama · 25/08/2016 07:13

Good morning all,
Wishing those awaiting GCSE results good news.
Mrs, sorry to hear you suffering abdnominal pain. How long are you meant to take the antiinflammatory meds?
Minty, a mixed bag you have there. Hope you are sorted out soon.
Leslie, good to hear you are doing considerably well. You are such a positive force here. Bless you always.
I had my CT scan and mammogram yesterday. A very long and exhausting day. I officially hate hospitals Sad
I am seeing my oncologist about the resukts next week. The mammogram specialist said the breasts seemed fine, but it is the CT scan that is what my doc is looking to check after that x ray something.
Anyways..we shall see..feeling so shattered after yesterday..it hink it is the nerves mostly.
Have a good day all.

mrsrhodgilbert · 25/08/2016 07:34

Morning Royal, I'm so pleased the morning has arrived, such a sticky night again. I think my ideal temp is about 10 degrees.

I share your feeling about hospitals, such stress inducing places these days. Which day do you have to go back for results? I've never had a mammogram person offer any words after taking the images so at least that was a bit of comfort. It's terrible how we try to interpret what they say and what they don't say looking for positive words.

Leslie, I hope you have managed some sleep and have a better day again, mis it very hot where you are?

It occurred to me a few days ago that we haven't heard from Amber for a long time, does anyone have any contact with her?

Good luck with exam results today. DD2 will be going back to university next month for year 2. I'm so used to having her at home again, not looking forward to that but we have a little holiday booked the day after she returns.

I'm not going to take any more of these tablets, the pain has been ridiculous, they must be doing harm. I'll call the dr later.

Sleepy you are in my thoughts so much still.

chewingawasp · 25/08/2016 09:08

Morning all. It's cooler today thankfully.
Ds was up until 5.30 then had a bit of a nap until the Head called with results. He got all B's and C's which is brilliant considering the difficulties he has faced in the last year and minimal revision. Very relieved here now and off to do shopping and lunch later. Love to all, especially sleepy.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 25/08/2016 09:08

mrsrhod I hope you can speak to your GP today. It sounds rather worrying. And as you say, pretty useless if the pain is just elsewhere now. Hopefully there's something else you can take for the pain that won't cause as many problems.

Thanks, I slept quite well. It's very hot here. Bleurgh. I plan to spend the entire day sitting in front of my industrial sized fan!

amber is alright, though I think she's pretty much stopped posting on MN

chewing I hope you slept well and that DS gets good news today

royal well done for getting through a horrid day at the hospital. Good news about the mammogram, and fingers crossed for the CT results. I hope you have a relaxing day ahead of you today. I find I'm always exhausted after a hospital trip, even just routine clinic appointments.

1234hello I'm really sorry to hear about your loved one's diagnosis Flowers

I hope everyone has a good day

OP posts:
mrsrhodgilbert · 25/08/2016 09:18

I'm pleased to hear Amber is ok but very sorry to hear she's stopped posting. Her research and posts were so encouraging. I hope she hasn't been upset by anything here.

Chewing, well done to your do, I hope this allows him to do whatever he wants to next.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 25/08/2016 09:27

Cross-posted with you chewing that's brilliant news :)

OP posts:
mumto2andnomore · 25/08/2016 09:30

Well done to chewings DS, enjoy celebrating 🎉

mintyneb · 25/08/2016 10:37

Chewing that's great news, well done to your DS! Enjoy your shopping trip :)

mrs I think I cross posted with you yesterday. Sorry to hear you've moved from one kind of pain to another. I had a frozen shoulder a few years back and took anti inflammatories alongside a cream and ended up in A&E a few days later as I was in such pain. Turns out it was gastritis and I've kept away from the pills and aspirin ever since. I hope your GP can come up with an alternative as being in pain is utterly miserable

royal, I'm with you on how draining hospitals can be. Sounds like the mammo was looking good, fingers crossed for similar results next week from the scan

leslie enjoy your day in front of the fan!

Good to hear amber is well. I had come to rely on her posts for a layman's view on what the doctors have to say. And she's always so positive about her own situation.

Good luck to anyone else awaiting results today - medical or academic!
