Blood in dd's urine but no sign of infection

Dd had blood in her urine on Thursday night, saw an emergency doctor who gave her antibiotics and took a urine sample as he thought it was just an infection. She's had more blood since, although not as much, it's still stinging when she wees, and she's sore most of the time.

Results today are clear - there's no infection. So now I'm panicking, because if it's not an infection then what is it? I have an appointment with the GP for her tomorrow but could do with some reassurance that it could be nothing at all. I won't Google because I'll scare myself stupid, but wondered if anyone had experienced this and it been just one of those things?

Please - I'm really shaky and panicking here.

sorry can't help, just bumping for as you sound v worried.

anorak · 15/01/2007 13:07

you got there first!

WigWamBam · 15/01/2007 13:12

I am worried. I'm shaking and panicky and that's not like me. I was so expecting them to say "Yes, it's an infection, keep giving the antibiotics". I'm scared of what it might be if it's not an infection.

WWB - so sorry to hear this. I don't have any knowledge in this area either, but hope someone who knows something can reassure you.

WigWamBam · 15/01/2007 13:36

Thanks Jackie. Am a wreck at the moment!

Bump in case someone can help ... even just to tell me that I'm being silly!

I guess if they thought it was anything sinister when they got the results, they'd have speeded up an appointment, wouldn't they?

WigWamBam · 15/01/2007 13:43

They hadn't got a clue what was going on when I rang. The GP has written on the test report that the urine was clear, and the receptionist just repeated that to me. When I spoke to the doctor he hadn't looked at the computer, didn't know about the trip to the emergency GP, and had assumed that because it was clear there was no other action to be taken.

Hmm. Bit cr@p of them, but they're obviously not worried, so hopefully it can't be anything major.

WigWamBam · 15/01/2007 13:51

Very crap.

The emergency doctor we saw was quite concerned, and said that if no infection showed up dd had to be referred for further tests and scans as a matter of urgency. That's part of the reason I'm so shaky. My doctor's surgery are useless so I'm not really convinced that their lack of concern is a good thing!

Ah, I see - fair enough. So is it worth ringing NHS Direct? Ask them their advice?

noddyholder · 15/01/2007 13:54

Go straight to doctors as it could be protein which if significant amounts shows as blood.I have a history of kidney problems and would urge you to go.Any other symptoms even unusual ones?

noddyholder · 15/01/2007 13:55

Did she have any sort of infection throat or anything viral in the last 6-8 weeks?

WigWamBam · 15/01/2007 13:58

No other symptoms really, noddy. It stings when she wees, it's sore for ages afterwards - typical urine infection symptoms. No backache or tummy ache.

The GP won't see her today, they have emergency appointments at the end of surgery but they're all gone so the earliest I can take her is tomorrow. Which isn't too bad considering, but I'm just really worried.

She had chicken pox over Christmas.

Tiggiwinkle · 15/01/2007 14:01

Perhaps you could take her to A and E as you are so concerned and have no confidence in your GP?

tamum · 15/01/2007 14:03

WWB, I am far from being an expert at this, but I know with these tests they only look for the microorganisms that are requested, or that are usually examined for this type of infection. I don't honestly see how they would be in a position to say there is no infection, as opposed to no indication of an infection caused by the usual suspects. I don't think that helps much, but although I agree that you should follow it up I think it's far from proven that it's anything suspcious just yet. Poor you, I really feel for you

WigWamBam · 15/01/2007 14:07

I don't want to waste A&E's time though, if it's just one of those things.

The last time I had to take a sample of her urine, they didn't even send it to the lab - just did a dip-test in the surgery. I can't help but wonder whether that's what they've done this time as well. All they said was that it was normal, no sign of infection - I don't know how they've determined that.

I'm sure you're right and it's probably nothing nasty but it's frightening to think about the things that could be causing this. Particularly as the emergency GP was so concerned.

I think it's time to change our GP.

I would have thought they may ask for a repeat test - did they confirm there was blood in the urine? (I mean I know it may be obvious to your eye but they normally confirm it in a urine test).

noddyholder · 15/01/2007 14:16

When teh blood is indicative of serious kidney problems there is usually swelling somewhere.i never had the typical ankle swelling but did have swelling around my eyes.

noddyholder · 15/01/2007 14:17

It is perfectly possible to have blood with no infection

foxinsocks · 15/01/2007 14:18

has she hurt herself recently around that region, like had a nasty fall or bashed herself around the groin?

WigWamBam · 15/01/2007 14:21

Fox, I don't know whether blood showed up on the test. The doctor who had made the notes on the result hadn't mentioned it, the receptionist who had the notes in front of her couldn't understand them, and the doctor I spoke to didn't see the results at all (left hand not knowing what right hand is doing ...) Useless bunch.

Noddy, I haven't noticed any unusual swelling. One of her eyes always looks a little bit puffy but there's nothing different at the moment. I guess that has to be one consolation!

Thank you.

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 15/01/2007 14:24

Fox, she hasn't hurt herself. I also asked her if she's been poking her bits and she said no. She looks sore around there, which isn't unusual as she's still in a nappy at night-time which sometimes leaves her sore, but there's no sign of any cuts or anything like that.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 15/01/2007 14:25

they sound useless and in fact, it's a pet rant of mine that they get receptionists to give people urine/blood test results when they don't understand the results. Just cannot see the point in that.

hope the appointment throws a bit more light on the situation - if they suggest a kidney scan, don't be too worried. It's a pretty standard thing that's done for children with UTIs (whether she has one or not!).
