Medised - still available?

Hello
I heard a terrifying rumour that Medised had been taken off the market because it is too powerful a sedative for the under 1's.

Can this be true?

And if it is, can anyone recommend another Mickey Finn?

TIA

Not heard this rumour. But I did think that medised was for 12 months and over?

suzywong · 26/05/2004 11:19

Oh I see
Do you know of anything similarly powerful for a teething 9 month old by any chance?

OP posts:
Northerner · 26/05/2004 11:27

I think at that age you can only use calpol. Even baby nurofen is from 12 months.

I found liquid ambesol to be really effective.

SoupDragon · 26/05/2004 11:27

Nope - Medised Infant is still available and this is suitable from 3 months to 12 years. It wasstill available a couple of months ago anyway but plain "medised" definitely seems to have disappeared.

SoupDragon · 26/05/2004 11:28

Ordinary Medised was for over 12 months but the Infant version is fine from 3 months.

SoupDragon · 26/05/2004 11:29

Er... not that I'm an expert. Oh no, I never sedate my children.

suzywong · 26/05/2004 11:34

Hurrah!
Thanks Soupy,
I was just curious for research purposes of course

Sorry Northerner didn't see that in my glee
I'll keep that in mind too,

Allegedly, if your DH misunderstands your instructions gives your clearly unwell DS (5) a dose of Medised and then a dose of Piriton, it will knock them out in around 10 minutes. (Does "Medised and Piriton" sound like "Paracetamol and Nurofen"???)

suzywong · 26/05/2004 11:41

What a buffoon, but that is worth knowing, for research purposes

SoupDragon · 26/05/2004 11:42

My response was "you did WHAT???"

Skara · 26/05/2004 11:45

it's true, plain medised has been withdrawn - not that I would ever sedate my children either...

Don't think the infant stuff has the same effect - certainly didn't on my 4 and 2yo when they were suffering from a hideous bug and not sleeping.

futurity · 26/05/2004 11:48

just bought some this morning from boots..not sure which version it is though. it is the only thing that will help my 2.4 year old with his current teething of back molars

gscrym · 26/05/2004 11:54

You can get Calprofen that can be used from 6 months I think. Works a treat on DS who will not take Calpol. (he objects to pink stuff). There's also Disprol suspension.

Wouldntdreamofit · 26/05/2004 12:05

Alternatives to Medised:

Hand child to MIL, accompanied by a small bottle of whisky (as present to MIL, of course). Say "don't do anything I wouldn't do, will you?". Leave.

charlieplus3 · 26/05/2004 12:30

I cannot live without a bottle of medised in my cupboard.

21stcenturygirl · 26/05/2004 12:33

Got the new Infant medised on Saturday - gave to dd2 result = 1 3 year old asleep from 5pm to 6am Still works for me!

SoupDragon · 26/05/2004 12:34

I don't buy Calpol any more, I get whatever generic version the chemist/tescos sell. They can be different flavours, they're not all pink and they're generally cheaper.

Nutcracker · 26/05/2004 14:08

Oh no, please say it's not true. I threw an empty bottle out a few days ago. I was going to get another one to keep in for when kids won't sleep erm i mean for when they are ill

Bloody hell, Ds slept like a log on it too.

suzywong · 26/05/2004 14:09

I've just got back from the Pharmacy, ho ho ho ho (for research purposes of course)

OP posts:
emmatmg · 26/05/2004 14:21

Didn't know that there were different types, but infant is definatley still available in the chemist around the corner from me.

Funnily enough, DS3 slept through on sunday night(still waking for a bottle at 8 months!!!!) and I foolishly thought 'Hoooo-Rah maybe he's cracked it' then I remembered that medised had giving me the good night sleep. Back to night feeds and obscenely early waking this morning.

Posey · 26/05/2004 20:45

My sisters friend is an independent pharmacist and he said a lot of chemists have stopped stocking it as it is being inappropriately and excessively used because it is such a good sedative. He recommended DOZOL instead.

SoupDragon · 26/05/2004 20:51

"Inappropriately and excessively used"?? I won't hear it! I only ever give it to my children if they complain of feeling ill or ask for medicine...

As for Dozol... with a name like that, what else are you going to use it for At least Medised sounds like a medicine.

Piffleoffagus · 26/05/2004 20:54

I have it but have only ever used it for snotty noses?
I thought it was a decongestant? We got it on prescription, is it a sedative? Shite! I never know that
D'oh for me
