Sooooooooooooooo tedious.

ernest · 07/01/2007 11:04

sunnywong · 07/01/2007 11:13

Mine are very light and pass by in 2 days with nothing but a week of BAD PMT to show for them but I read the title and realised that I have had 29 years of them since I started mine when I was 11 and I am now 40. I don't think the menopause is a laugh a minute either is it though Suze? I'm not looking forward to it much, esp as mine will prob happen just as dd starts being a teenager, that'll be a nice combination, mmmm.

ernest · 07/01/2007 11:15

ok sorry. only joking. I've got my big knickers out at the ready, am considering mirena, big have no mooncup probs and not too bothered per se by periods (quite light & no pain), but would very happily never have another one. Can understand it being a million times worse if a heavy or b. painful or c, both. - horror.

sunnywong · 07/01/2007 11:16

ha, you'd better build another bathroom for your dp to escape to

Yes, I 'm sure menopause is no fun but it's got to be slightly less gory

OP posts:
DumbledoresGirl · 07/01/2007 11:17

29 years of them here too (started at 13 and now 42). Yes I could welcome to the menopause (well the lack of periods without a growing baby in my stomach) too. Not looking forward to the night sweats and dryness though - that seems to be coming to me anyway.

Embarrassed question from one who should know this already: does the dryness come before or after the cessation of periods?

sunnywong · 07/01/2007 11:19

ooh that's a good question?

I 'll probably be so continually foul tempered the thing may as well seal over, so it will make no odds to me

Yeah but it is interrupting my own pleasure right now. Oh God, I am off. I know it is Sunday night to you but it is Sunday morning for most of us and this is not the time for such a confession!

I think I'm in the menopause but so far haven't any adverse symptoms (yet), just the periods are not now every month. But after 37 years of regular-as-clockwork that's become quite a relief.

Main drag is having to carry stuff at all times as I never know anymore when its going to happen. Also variation: sometimes very light, sometimes very heavy.

anorak · 07/01/2007 11:39

Did you see my thread a few months ago here on this very topic.

I totally agree, sick and tired of it.

Oh thanks for that link anorak, just read the whole thread, very interesting. Nice to know one is not alone, however horrid the whole thing is.

Someone wondered on that thread whether the memory loss, mood swings etc are forever. I have begun to feel (in between periods whcih can be approx 3 months now) what I can only describe as "hormonally neutral" ,like I remember feeling as a child before my periods first started (ie, no PMT).

Feels good and my brain seems to be working slightly better as well. Maybe we'll all get a new lease of life after this bit (God, sounds like a sanatogen advert, shoot me now)

foxinsocks · 08/01/2007 20:47

lol cam

I am in an artificial menopause for a few months to give me a break from my nightmare periods. It's very weird - can't say I feel up or down but have had lovely night sweats and a few hot flushes (but always at night!). I have got some stuff to take to counter the adverse effects but haven't bothered to take it yet. I've had 22 years of periods and had enough of them but I'll see what happens at the end of these few months (ends in Feb) and then try and see what the gynae wants to do.

Periods are a curse (once you've had kids!), that's for sure ggrrr.

DumbledoresGirl · 09/01/2007 09:47

I have just had a thought and call me naive if you like but it is the first time this has occurred to me.

What happens after the menopause to your sex drive if, like me, you are someone who has definite highs and lows in the sex drive according to what time of the month it is?

Cappuccino · 09/01/2007 09:49

you just knit a lot

foxinsocks · 09/01/2007 09:59

DG, I guess you get HRT or go herbal as some people do!

I'm about to start taking it - a form of HRT(tonight) so I can report back if you like (although I imagine it's different for everyone). I too have definite ups (ovulation) and downs (errr pretty much the rest of the time ) in my sex drive and the menopause seems to have dulled the ups and downs. The HRT gives you some sort of oestrogen and is supposed to help with all that I think.

Remember, the menopause should (hopefully) happen gradually so it won't be one final hurrah (so to speak).

foxinsocks · 09/01/2007 10:10

here you are - menopause and sex

Gingeme · 09/01/2007 10:11

Good morning ladies. Just started mine again after having lo and I have to say I didnt miss them at all. Nearly a year without was bliss. Hate them hate them hate them. Tried the injection a few years back which was great but my libido was zero and it took about a year for my periods to return so my hormones were up the wall

DumbledoresGirl · 09/01/2007 10:18

I liked your comment cappuccino but that link foxinsocks just depressed me. It seems that my worst nightmare will come true. So what do I knit? Anyone got a pattern for a penis cover since it seems dh won't be getting it out very often.

foxinsocks · 09/01/2007 10:23

oh DG, I was hoping you'd find that reassuring! Surely, worrying about it will make it worse? It does say that if it becomes a problem, it can be treated.

DumbledoresGirl · 09/01/2007 10:33

Yeah... just to take HRT would mean compromising my values and I don't fancy sex therapy either!

Still, like you say, no point worrying. I am a youthful 42 still and I don't really think I will have the menopause for a few years yet (though my sister is on the verge or going through it? and she is 47).

fortyplus · 09/01/2007 10:34

See your GP! If you have to change a towel or tampon more than once per hour you have 'heavy periods' and need help.
I've recently had a Hysteroscopy (ie camera up the parts) which discovered polyps - a whole forest of them!

I'm also going to have a procedure called 'Endometrial Ablation'. Takes 5 mins under local anaesthetic using a 'Novasure' device - Google it if you want to know more.

About 70% of patients have no periods whatsoever afterwards - the rest might have half or one day of light bleeding.

I've got my follow up appt on 24th Feb to talk about having it done - I'll post when I've talked more to the consultant, but it sounds like bliss. A friend had it done and says it's unbelievably liberating not to have periods any more.
