Meningitis - please help - URGENT!

My DD (7mths) was taken into hospital yesterday as she had had a high temp for 4 days and was generally unwell. After a lumper puncture this morning they now think it is a strain of meningitis. They say it can be treated with antibiotics and did talk to me about it, but basically i was in such a blind panic i didn't pay that much attention. I am now at home (DH is with DD) and am working myself up into a frenzy. Has any one any experience of this? Iknow it is not the really dangerous kind, but she is my angel and i am soo worried. Any advice, experiences etc would be appreciated - ASAP!!!

no help at all but hope you get answers soon and that you talk to dh soon and hear that dd is doing fine.

KateandtheGirls · 25/05/2004 23:18

Sorry, no experience of meningitis, but I do have experience of a 7 month old in the hospital, because my oldest was hospitalised for pneumonia at 7 months, so I kind of understand. It sounds like it's nothing too serious, but that doesn't stop you worrying of course. Just try and get some sleep now, and then concentrate on loving her, kissing her and hugging her, when you are back with her, and try and hang in there until she's released. She'll be better soon! Thinking of you.

Fee - sorry no advice or experience I just wanted to say sorry that your darling is poorly. Every time my kids are poorly I fret that it is meningitis. Lumbar puncture also very hard to deal with but very necessary. Just remember she's in the best place and presumably once she's on anti-biotics she'll be getting better pretty quick. Please keep us informed.

fee77 · 25/05/2004 23:29

Sorry - in my panic i have set this message a few times!! Can i group them together?
Yes i could stay - i stayed last night, and felt DH should have a turn. He is just as worried as me. Thanks for all your kind words. Mums net are the only people up this late!!! i will keep you posted.

Fee, sorry your dd is so ill. I have found a factsheet on meningitis here just to fill you in on some details. They will have put her on antibiotics. We had a meningitis scare last year, when a friend's dd was diagnosed as havining a meningococcal infection. She was in hospital for quite a few days but has made a full recovery. All her contacts had to be treated with an antibiotic called rifampicillin. The public health people may ask you for a list of contacts so that everyone can be given prophylaxis.

HTH and that she is better soon.

Hello Fee,

My dd had viral meningitis at 3 wks. She had a high temp - I took her to hospital were she had a lumbar puncture. The ratio of white cells to something (I forget what) indiated the bacterial form. She had intravenous antibiotics, heart & breathing monitoring until the test results confirmed it was viral - this took four days. We went home on the fifth day. She is now one year and ok.

It was a really worrying and stressful time. I hope that your dd is ok and that you and dh are ok as well. Ask them tomorrow to explain again - the medics will understand that you didn't take it all in. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time xx

Levanna · 25/05/2004 23:38

fee, sorry to hear your DD is poorly. My sister had meningitis about four years ago. (One of the nastier strains .) But, she recovered with absolutely no after affects or lingering problems . She was in her teens at the time. Your DD is in the right place for this to be resolved, and they have great success in doing so now. I know it's heartbreaking to have someone you love taken ill with meningitis (particulary a child, this must be really hard for you) you're angel may be quite poorly for a little while, but I'm sure she'll be well again soon. Thinking of you (and having a bit of a sniffle!)
xx

Levanna · 25/05/2004 23:41

(We were all given rifampicillin (or similar) too - and all pee'ed bright orange for days!)

twogorgeousboys · 26/05/2004 00:02

Fee77 - can't offer any advice but wanted to send you a big hug and hope your little girl gets better soon.

fee77 · 26/05/2004 00:09

Thank you all for your kind words. I know i should be getting rest but my mind is racing. What did i do to deserve this? I would do anything to take away her suffering. The nurses etc at hospital are fantastic, but i feel so alone. I can't speak to any of my friends as if i mention meningitis they will all be worried - we have reguar meet ups with babies - what if their children are at risk?

Dear fee77
Ask the medics for a list of what your friends can look out for. Please talk to your friends they'll be worried for their families but will eb supportive to you as well. Please be kind to yourself at this time xxx

fairyprincess · 26/05/2004 00:15

They took the lumper puncture after she had had two sets of antibiotics so they don't know if the culturs (?) will work, in which case it will be inconclusive. She has a swollen fonteneal (soft bit on head)and obviously they are monitoring her closely. I am signing off now to pack my back so i can jump straight out of bed to the car. Thank you all so much. I will keep you posted .

I've also had no experience of this but will be keeping my fingers crossed that she is better today.

Toothache · 26/05/2004 08:06

Oops - Posted on the other thread..... Fee77 - Just wanted to post to say I can't imagine the worry you are going through.... please keep us informed. It does sound as though things are not as serious as they could've been.... perhaps no comfort for you just now though.

Hulababy · 26/05/2004 08:41

No advice Fee77 but really wanted to send you hugs and best wishes. I really hope your DD starts impoving soon.

bunny2 · 26/05/2004 08:47

Thinking of you and your dd today.

willow2 · 26/05/2004 09:27

Fingers crossed for you. xxxxxxxx

maomao · 26/05/2004 09:36

Oh fee77, hugs to you!

Piffleoffagus · 26/05/2004 09:51

Fee77, I am so sorry this must be so scary for you.
My son was taken in with suspected meningitis as a 2 yr old, he had the lumbur puncture and the high dose antibiotics, it turned out that he did not have it, but this took two days to confirm totally. You are lucky it has been diagnosed so fast and that action has been taken, your dd will almost certainly be recovered quickly with no side effects.

BIG hugs how awful to see your baby in hospital...

coppertop · 26/05/2004 09:53

Posted on the other thread. Just wanted to send you my very best wishes and hope that dd will be back to her usual little self as soon as possible. xx

CountessDracula · 26/05/2004 09:57

fee77 how terrifying for you. I really really hope that your dd is soon fully recovered - will be thinking of you today. It is so frightening when little babies are ill. xxxxx
