My DD (7mths) was taken into hospital yesterday as she had had a high temp for 4 days and was generally unwell. After a lumper puncture this morning they now think it is a strain of meningitis. They say it can be treated with antibiotics and did talk to me about it, but basically i was in such a blind panic i didn't pay that much attention. I am now at home (DH is with DD) and am working myself up into a frenzy. Has any one any experience of this? Iknow it is not the really dangerous kind, but she is my angel and i am soo worried. Any advice, experiences etc would be appreciated - ASAP!!!

Hold on tight, Fee. Your little one is in the right place, and getting the right treatment....but there is nothing to take away the anguish for you and your DH. All I can say is I know two little bright-eyed tearaways who suffered the same thing and both bounced back. Thinking of you very much. XXXX

Fee - my DS2 had meningitis when he was 6 months old so I know how it feels
The type of meningitis he had was pneumococcal which was not a risk to anyone else. Obviously friends were really worried and were contacing their doctors incase there had been a risk to their children at toddler group. I got DH to phone them and reassure them.

Meningococcal meningitis can be a risk to others but the doctors would ask you about contact with any other people.

Pneumococcal meningitis needs to be treated for longer because it is a difficult bug to kill. DS2 was on intravenous antibiotics for 10 days and he then had them by mouth for a further week when he got home. Once he started to get better he very quickly got back to his usual self. He was sent for regular hearing tests because meningitis can cause deafness but he was absolutely fine. He is now a very health 14 year old doing well at school.
Do not be afraid to ask the staff about anything that is worrying you.Hope your dd recovers soon.
