Sudden onset of high temp.....Help

Ds has suddenly got a temp. He was sat eating his tea and began moaning and falling asleep. When i got him out of his chair he was roasting hot. He wasn't hot when i put him in there, and he has been fine all day.
I've just given him some Calpol and he's sitting on Dp's lap falling asleep.

Is it normal to go so hot so quickly. I can't remember it ever happening with Dd's before.

40 is a maximum, I think, nutty, (good job too!) and the sudden high temp out of the blue is usually the first symptom - sounds like it to me (but what do I know!)

OTOH it says they have the temp for 3 days and then the rash...DD1 didn't though, had them both together. IIRC!

Me again, nutty - just had another thought - has he had his MMR relatively recently? Only DD1's other spotty adventure was what appeared to be a mild dose of measles about a month after her MMR.

It was really awkward timing because we were living in NY, left when she was 15 months so she had her MMR at 14 months (earlier than usual) so that there was a decent interval between having it and travelling; then a few days after we arrived in the UK, staying at my dad's, not even registered with a GP yet, she came out in spots and we had to call in a locum from dad's GP. He said a weak attack of measles, possibly as a result of the immunisation, was all he could think of and certainly she wasn't very ill.

Spots are so hard to tell apart!

No Jan he had his MMR about 3/4 mths ago, but measles did cross my mind as it looked like that type of rash.

He still has a red face, although it seems to have broken up a bit and he's now got a big red patch on his chin and all up the bridge of his nose and across his forhead. His scalp looks red too.
He's still a bit warm but not hot.
Where he has the rash, his skin looks dry but shiny if that makes sense.

It does sound very odd, Nutty - he seems quite well though, presumably, apart from the temp? (And the red bits?) Maybe it's just one of those vague non-specific virusey things.

I suppose if it keeps on it might be worth taking him to the doc?

How is your packing going btw???

Nutcracker · 26/05/2004 16:32

Your right Jan it is weird, but he is happy enough at the mo. If the rash persists i'll take him to see the doc.

Packing is going o.k, keep thinking i haven't got too much to pack, and then i open a jam packed cupboard
They are still working on the house and fitted a new kitchen yesterday. Hopefully they will finish on time or even early

I don't think it sounds like slapped cheek nutty, I think thats just on the cheeks, not the chin etc. But I suppose the main thing is it isn't meningitis, and he seems well enough in himself!
Probably be right as rain in the morning and leave you wondering what you were worried about

Nutcracker · 26/05/2004 19:11

Yep, probably Lisa, thats usually how it goes.
