Mooncups...who's got / tried one?

DetentionGrrrl · 04/01/2007 08:07

I'm thinking about a mooncup for environmental reasons more than anything.

Has anyone found them good / bad / difficult to use?

Good.

Sugarfree · 04/01/2007 08:09

Very good.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/01/2007 08:11

They take a bit of time to get used to (less than a period, ime), but once you're used to them, they're actually a lot nicer than tampons.

They're brilliant. You never have to worry about running out of tampons or pads again!

Bozza · 04/01/2007 08:32

I like having mine. It is environmentally friendly, has saved me tons of money (while I had the implant I was not far off continuously bleeding), and it is always there - ie don't have to take tampons etc to work, remember to restock every month etc.

DetentionGrrrl · 04/01/2007 09:26

Has anyone used one while jogging/running? Are they ok at night?

Sorry for all the questions, don't want to spend the money without checking 1st!

Do you mind if I jump in? I've been considering getting one as well but I have very heavy periods (sorry, trying not to give tmi) - do they work then or do you need to use pads as well?

expatinscotland · 04/01/2007 09:41

LOVE it!

It took a few cycles to get used to, but I am sooooo glad I stuck w/it.

I've also found my periods are lighter - or at least, they seem to me compared to when I was using tampons - and I have fewer cramps w/the mooncup.

whoopsfallenoveragain · 04/01/2007 09:44

DG - I love mine too - I played hockey the first time I used mine and paniced the whole time it was going to leak but it didn't.

Pudding - I had a really heavy period last month I just found I needed to empty it more often I did use a pantyliner as backup though

Bozza · 04/01/2007 09:50

Well if you are really heavy (I have had times of this with the implant) then yes you may need back up but less so than you would with tampons. And yes you can use them overnight - in fact this was a big plus point for me. I couldn't use just a pad overnight because it was insufficient, but using a pad and a tampon is not great for long spells of time, so using the mooncup and a pad was much better. And on lighter days just the mooncup was fine. I am talking about very heavy bleeding here and most people find just the mooncup is fine.

Now I am back on the pill it has all changed.

Berrie · 04/01/2007 09:51

I find that mine leaks occasionally if I have a heavy month but then a tampon would too. I don't think I would use it if I wasn't a sahm though. I can't imagine rinsing it out in a public loo, they suggest you carry around a small bottle of water.

whoopsfallenoveragain · 04/01/2007 09:54

I work all day and I use one although our toilets here have the sink in them. If I know I am going out I will empty it before I leave and then when I get home so haven't yet needed to worry about the public toilet issue!

NotQuiteCockney · 04/01/2007 12:59

You can just empty it and reinsert it, if you're somewhere without a private sink. Obviously rinsing is better, but from what I know, just emptying is fine.

i think they're excellent, and agree with expat, my periods seem lighter and cramps are barely noticeable now. i've recommended them to loads of people who have also loved them.

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 13:08

Yep, have one. Pretty easy to use (used it fro two onths). I do have exceptionally heavy periods, and need to use a pad for a day or twoa s well- bt that gives me three or four hours, whereas the tampon / pad combi gave me an hour tops. So on the whole, A MASSSIVE improvement

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 13:10

the only slightly gruesome event was being in a toilet with my 3.5 year old and having to try and divert their attention LOL as it is a bit visual, iyswim.

TheArmadillo · 04/01/2007 13:10

FOund mine brilliant, but it did take the first couple of days to get used to - I found it difficult to get it out to start with and came very close to getting dp to help. BUt now in, out no problem.

PoppiesMum · 04/01/2007 13:12

Find it great - took a few 'attempts' to get the hang of it, but it's so much more convenient and hygenic (and I have heavy periods).

fleacircus · 04/01/2007 13:32

This is my first visit to MumsNet and I happened upon this thread pretty much at random - but I am so inspired by your mooncup optimism that I have just ordered one online. I hope it really works!

2nervesleft · 04/01/2007 13:38

Love love love mine.
For all the reasons said below. It has never leaked even on heavy days and none of the terror when you accidentally drop the tampon wrapper down the loo and have to fish it out because it won't flush in the work loo.

I had never heard of them until I went on MN.

MerryChristmasPANDAGHappyNewYe · 04/01/2007 13:46

I love mine - took me a couple of days to get used to it, but AF so much less of a faff now - you can use it when you are about to come on, without worrying, and can use it at the end too, when you wouldn't want to use a tampon. I do use a liner too, just in case, but I don't know why, as have never had a leak. Cannot recommend highly enough - I keep trying to convert my RL friends.

filthymindedvixen · 04/01/2007 13:50

I have used one for 3 months now. Absolutely love it. The only drawback is remebering to take some watr with you in a bottle every day if you're out and about to rinse it with.
I have been fine at night but on day 1/2 of AF I did have to wear pants with a pad, as I obviously move around a lot in my sleep.....

Tatties · 04/01/2007 14:05

I love my Mooncup. It's great not filling up my bin with tampons and STs. It does take a wee while to get used to but it's worth it.
