4 weeks ago, nearly 5 now. It's awful. Stools are very hard and get impacted. On lactulose and eating lots of dried fruit and water.

Help. Smile

Don't be afraid to keep using the suppositories until you no longer feel bunged up.

CoteDAzur · 10/02/2016 18:29

Did the coffee help?

Fugghetaboutit · 10/02/2016 21:45

Nope :( haven't been today so took a senakot max strength just now so hopefully will go in the morning. The amazon reviews were hysterical

I tried lots of things including laxatives the only thing that really worked was prune juice !

Fluffywuffyunicorn · 10/02/2016 21:57

My Dd is 21 weeks and iv struggled to go, up until a few weeks ago! I tried laxatives, they hardly worked. Only thing I find that works and keeps on working is prune juice. One cup a day. And if I'm struggling two cups, one cold and one warm.

Fugghetaboutit · 11/02/2016 08:50

What's the best stool softeners? Dulcoease? Dried fruits aren't doing it.
Will get prune juice today.

Movicol (or Laxido) is the best stool softener by miles.

NattyGolfJerkin · 11/02/2016 11:14

Have you seen someone about it? How long has it been since you passed a proper stool? If there has been nothing for 4-5 weeks, you've not seen anyone and the laxido/movicol at full dose aren't helping, it might be that you need to have a microenema to clear the backlog and get you going again. 5 weeks without a normal poo should be checked out by a health care professional.

Movicol and Laxido can take time to get things going but stick with it and do make sure you drink plenty of fluids moving forwards.

lougle · 11/02/2016 11:25

You're breastfeeding. So you need to drink loads and loads. If you are having hard stools then you're dehydrated.

Fugghetaboutit · 11/02/2016 11:33

Natty I've been a few times since I have birth but they are hard and impacted. Then after they pass I have small pebble poo.

The day I posted this thread I had been and when I took a suppository the day before yesterday.

Movicol made me feel v nauseous / maybe because it's mostly salt? Is there an alternative? I'm drinking lots but you're right, I'm breastfeeding and constipated so need to drink lots. I'm probably getting a litre a day and orange juice.

VagueIdeas · 11/02/2016 11:47

Add plenty of squash to Movicol. It's vile on its own. You need to keep it up though - it really is the best treatment for severe constipation/impaction. At least three sachets per day.

Germgirl · 11/02/2016 18:04

Oh god yes, I should've said. I buy the plain (unflavoured) movicol & add orange or grapefruit squash, it's salty & soapy on its own. But is really is the best thing by far so do persevere.

Ridingthegravytrain · 11/02/2016 19:50

Huge dose of milk of magnesia. Then stay near a toilet. Works wonders.

SquidgeyMidgey · 11/02/2016 21:43

I used to have a half a big bag of dried apricots washed down with a pint of warm water and that did the trick for me.

TMI and slightly comic poo moment... once post-DC I was very constipated, sat on the loo for ages and it wouldn't budge so I squeezed the hard poo with my bum muscles as much as I could and pressed on my perineum to try to reshape it and ease it out. It eventually came out. Took a few flushes to go and then it blocked the downpipe. DH went out to clear the pipe and said he found a 'square shit' blocking the bend. Oops. He still likes to remind me from time to time.

Whatdoidohelp · 12/02/2016 08:29

A litre is not where near enough liquid for a day! Your probably making close to that in breastmilk. You need to be having close to three litres a day - no wonder you can't crap!

Fugghetaboutit · 12/02/2016 08:38

Grin at square poo!

Blush I know it's not enough, I find it hard to drink lots. I'm not having any tea if that's any consolation. I will try and up it today!

ICJump · 12/02/2016 08:43

Tea I'd ok to drink. Could you get some decaf tea if your worried about the caffeine or herbal tea. I quite like making a big thing of herbal tea and drinking it cold.

Artandco · 12/02/2016 10:04

Yes a litre a day is no where near enough. That will all be used in milk leaving none left in poo!!

You need a pint per feed approx. That's half a litre roughly. So 8 breastfeeds a day, you would need 4 litres of liquid.
Get a pint size glass to fill and drink every time you sit down to feed

Artandco · 12/02/2016 10:05

As a guide an adult needs around 2 litres a day when not feeding

Germgirl · 12/02/2016 10:36

I'm doing an 'eight sachet' movicol day. Haven't been properly for days & I need a clear out.hope you're getting on ok op, and yes, you need to drink more liquid!

OzzieFem · 12/02/2016 13:26

Movicol micro enema available at your local chemist. You can apply lubricant to the end or just squeeze a small drop out to make it easier to insert.

Put towel on bed, lie on left side, insert and squeeze all contents out of tube. Withdraw without letting up on the squeeze part. Remain lying on left side and elevate pelvis above head height to keep fluid in. Stay in this position as long as you can.

I had this problem post surgery, found the oral laxatives revolting and useless. Hadn't been for 8 days straight. Took 3 enemas over that day to get rid of the lower end blockage, then went several time a day for the next couple of days. No problems since. Smile

whatevva · 12/02/2016 13:36

Movicol probably tastes saltier if you are dehydrated.

I usually dilute it with a whole glass of water. I quite like it Blush It is sort of like bicarb with a hint of washing up liquid Grin

To drink more, have water by you all the time (like you do in hospital) and sip it as and when - it is amazing how much you can get through. I find I can absent-mindedly down a whole glass. Then have your normal tea breaks and meal time drinks as well.

Once you have done this for a while, you will have a better idea of how much you need to drink.

P1nkP0ppy · 12/02/2016 13:42

Crushed linseed might help, sprinkle a tablespoonful on your cereal or in yogurt and drink at least 3 litres liquid a day.
Also have you tried dried figs, dates, prunes as they're very fibrous?

ICJump · 19/02/2016 06:37

How are you going Fugg?
