4 weeks ago, nearly 5 now. It's awful. Stools are very hard and get impacted. On lactulose and eating lots of dried fruit and water.

Help. Smile

Also get a step stool or upturned bucket to put you feet on. This pits your body in the squat position in the toilet and will help make it easier and require less effort to get the poo out.
You poor thing.

Fugghetaboutit · 09/02/2016 07:57

I use ds' step at the moment as that helps! Thank you :)

how often should I take the movicol? Another two sachets this morning or tonight?

lighteningirl · 09/02/2016 08:02

Warm orange juice and brown sugar every morning and feet up on a stool and loads of water during the day worked for me.

Germgirl · 09/02/2016 08:07

Personally I'd do 4 sachets this morning. You can't really 'overdose' on it.

Fugghetaboutit · 09/02/2016 08:40

The pharmacist gave H the half dose 6.9? Because I'm breastfeeding but said to take two sachets if I need to.

I've heard orange juice isn't good when breastfeeding too as it upsets baby's tum, is that true as I would like some

Are you definitely drinking enough water? Otherwise prune juice saved me during pregnancy (when I wasn't mainlining lactulose). I never found dried fruit any good, in fact I thought prunes and dries apricots made things worse. Orange juice never upset my babies.

HooseRice · 09/02/2016 08:59

Lactulose in my experience made me more constipated in the long run. I got to the stage I HAD to have it to poo.

See if your doc can prescribe something better.

Everyone is different with what makes them go. Prune juice works spectacularly for me, in less than an hour, if I down a large glass the minute I get up. Any later in the day and it just gives me wind. Lots of water, strong coffee and a fag (not recommended one bit) also work.

happytocomply · 09/02/2016 09:16

Orange juice is fine while breastfeeding, there's so much unscientific nonsense spouted about what makes it into your breastmilk. Drink away. Check out The Breastfeeding Network fact sheet for constipation in breastfeeding, Movicol/Laxido is safe.

Fugghetaboutit · 09/02/2016 09:43

Thank you all. I went yesterday and it was like rabbit poo. Going to try to go everyday rather than wait from now on

Have you tried having an espresso in the morning? I won't guarantee anything but it most probably will get your gears working.

You'll soon see a Pavlov's Dog effect - you won't even have to drink it, just the smell will get things moving Smile

Fugghetaboutit · 09/02/2016 11:18

Grin Id love an espresso and fag tbh

I second drinking enough. With breastfeeding imagine they are taking liquid from you obviously all day. I was told to drink a pint of water every time I sat down to feed

Also fennel tea, it's fine with feeding, and it's what most countries give to babies who are constipated as natural but effective. Drink at least three cups of hot fennel tea a day ( it's caffeine free)

CoteDAzur · 09/02/2016 11:29

Well, maybe not the fag, although I do know what you mean Grin (Quit many years ago but still have fond memories of coffee & cigarettes)

Have an espresso after the morning breastfeed. I have a feeling that you won't have to bother with teas, lactulose, etc after that.

Fugghetaboutit · 09/02/2016 11:33

Will get one on way back from dropping ds, can't hurt!

Good idea re fennel tea as dd is constipated too..

I drink probably around 4-500ml when I feed although I sometimes forget and will try and make up for it. Drinking in general doesn't come that natural to me as I don't feel very thirsty that much so I have to force myself

I quit years ago too Cote as didn't want to be a smoking mum. How I miss my roll up in the morn

Is your baby constipated too?

Fugghetaboutit · 10/02/2016 04:35

Well she goes every few days, she went yesterday evening a cried when she went but it was soft. She's breastfed so I thought they didn't go as often

At five weeks they should generally being going several times a day. It might be worth speaking to to a breastfeeding counsellor.

Also upping your intake if water too something between 1.5-2 litres a day us about the minimum.

Tangoandcreditcards · 10/02/2016 05:32

Oh fugg it's you. Just came on to say snap!

I'm on 2 bowls of all bran (breakfast and dinner - I find the twigs more effective than the flakes), plus fybogel 2x daily and I'm still struggling, just about going every other day but it's not fun (and I'm not even BF). Got my 6w check at the GP today, going to see if they can suggest/prescribe anything, I'll report back.

Bostin · 10/02/2016 05:44

Every few days is normal for breastfed baby.
Hope you are getting sorted though.

ICJump · 10/02/2016 06:52

Boston it is once the baby has passed six weeks. So if there's been some on going issues having a chat with a breastfeeding counsellor could be beneficial.

Fugghetaboutit · 10/02/2016 08:49

She's feeding well and has lots of wet nappies and is putting on good weight. I'll ask the HV on Friday.

Tango it's awful isn't it? I used a suppository last night before it got bad again. Porridge with lots of wheat germ and flaxseed this morning. I didn't have this with ds! I hope we both can poo normally again soon!

OP posts:
Tangoandcreditcards · 10/02/2016 15:18

Dreadful fugg - I did last time but nothing like this bad for this long.

GPs advice was "use laxitives". Wouldn't expand by recommending a particular combo. Am now away for couple of days, so wary of loading up on anything too effective, will hit the chemist again on Fri when I get home if no improvement.

Whatdoidohelp · 10/02/2016 15:24

Ugh it's awful isn't it! Could you look into a colonic or enema to get the dry hard poop out and almost start afresh?

Fugghetaboutit · 10/02/2016 15:48

I think the suppository did that yesterday Blush but it builds up so quickly.

I've just bought senakot MAX will take that tonight
