What have I done to my foot- very painful (picture)

I tripped over thin air after having pins and needles...landed on the side of my foot and now it's swollen up like a golf ball on the side. What have I done to it? Anything I can do to help it heal? I've got a 40 minute walk to school in the morning.

I've torn ligaments & bruised beautifully, however, never had one 'pop' out like that!

yeOldeTrout · 24/11/2015 11:01

oh dear, X fingers for you. Send an update when you can. x

FadedRed · 24/11/2015 13:27

How's the foot, Op?

Neverletmego27 · 24/11/2015 14:35

Just gotback from a n e. An x ray confirmed that it is indeed, broken. I had a good look at the fracture on the screen as I was fascinated, but i'm in agony now. They have given me crutches and i'm to see the fracture clinic very early tommorow morning.

Bless you OP, not what you wanted to hear. Still, better to have it treated than to have left it. Hope you have a speedy recovery!

Haggisfish · 24/11/2015 15:05

Poor you. At least you know now, though and it's being treated.

Neverletmego27 · 24/11/2015 15:27

I was very suprised to see it was broken. The only thing was the Dr was rather lovely (and quite dishy). Not sure it was worth a trip to a n e for though!

Ouch!

I broke my foot years ago, been DS was just a few months old. It didn't look anywhere near as obviously broken as yours.

Hopefully you will be soon fixed up.

FadedRed · 24/11/2015 15:36

Flowers Cake [tea] oh, sorry, Op.
You might be surprised, but most of the pp's won't be.
Did exactly the same thing three years ago, plaster cast, then splint and crutches for six weeks, then Physio. But somewhat older than you so hopefully you'll get over it quicker than I did.
Hope you are getting lots of sympathy.

Neverletmego27 · 24/11/2015 16:01

They were deciding on a splint or not, but decided against it. I'm at the fracture clinic tommorow though so they might decide differently. Yeah, I'm quite young (28) so hopefully I'll heal OK.

Another who has had torn ligaments - my foot looked nothing like that but went black! All it did was twang when I stood on an upward incline!

Glad you've got it seen to, anyhow, and I hope it heals well.

Neverletmego27 · 24/11/2015 18:18

How much will I be able to do with a broken foot? I've tried today, and i'm guessing the answer is not much, but does the pain get better so i can at least be a bit more weight bearing (can't get in bath etc at the minute) . or where can I get help? Bit worried as I'm on my own with my dd.

OP posts:
NoelHeadbands · 24/11/2015 18:36

Have they put a boot on it?

I'm sorry it is actually broken btw, it's a bugger of an injury to have, my daughter was in plaster up to her knee

iwantgin · 24/11/2015 18:37

I was weight bearing - they gave me a walking cast (after the first night when I had a thigh length monstrosity!)

I was quite worried about being able to look after a 9 month old baby - but it was fine.

Baths (For me) were fun. I had to perch my foot on the side to keep it dry. Showers were out -but I think you can get waterproof covers now?

in your original post you mention a 40 min walk to school ? I doubt you'll be up to that. Can you get someone to help out for a bit - just until you can determine how much you are capable of ?

VegetablEsoup · 24/11/2015 18:44

the joys of fracture clinic...
been there a lot with dc this year.

  • waiting times will be loooooong, take something to read and eat/drink
  • you will (probably) be fitted with a moon boot or a cast

there will be leaflets sbout physio, take one. if you can affird to book a private physio session in a couple of week's time, nhs waiting times are often too long to be beneficial

Neverletmego27 · 24/11/2015 19:00

No boot or anything. The nurse quieried a splint, but in the end the DR said no splint . The fracture clinic are seeing me at 9.10am tommorow . I think they do the boot and stuff in the fracture clinic tommorow. They were going to send me today, but there was no space.

I had a break in exactly the same place a few years ago. I went over on the side of my foot doing the Conga at a wedding reception! I was given a cast that was about the size of a trainer sock and was split and fastened with velcro straps. I was told to wear it if I was more comfortable in it and I could decide when to stop. I could walk on it with crutches and could take it off to get in the bath.

Hassled · 24/11/2015 19:58

Oh I'm sorry to hear it was a break - and the logistics sound like a nightmare for you. Hope the pain gets under control soon.

Neverletmego27 · 24/11/2015 21:01

Yes hassled the logistics are going to be awful. I'm actually sitting here near tears thinking about what I'm going to do about a bath in the morning (don't have a shower) and dd on the school run etc. I am feeling very sorry for myself.

OP posts:
ChipInTheSugar · 24/11/2015 21:22

Can't you keep DD off for a day, just until you're sorted and plastered up?

Neverletmego27 · 24/11/2015 21:25

She's with a friend tonight, luckily. So my friend will take her to school in the am. I meant more in general, until I can walk properly again.

Can you have a personal wash like nessa off Gavin and Stacey? And dry shampoo for now?

Neverletmego27 · 24/11/2015 21:31

Ha ha a personal wash! I've had depression (past 18 months) and am just coming out of a breakdown (recovering). Part of my 'thing' is being clean. I might just have to brave it in the am!

OP posts:
gobbin · 24/11/2015 22:05

I 'personal washed' for five weeks in hospital earlier this year when I couldn't shower owing to my treatment. Soon got into a routine washing top to bottom including hair and feet every day in ten mins flat no prob. Nothing a good flannel can't deal with :)
