2 migraines in 24 hours

BudaBauble · 08/12/2006 07:35

I don't get migraines very - know I def haven't had one since we moved to Budapest and that was over 2 years ago. But got one yesterday morning - took 2 nurofen as soon as I realised and think I managed to stop it becoming too bad.

Woke up at 5am this morning with a bad headache - took 2 nurofen but they took ages to work and I did think I would be sick as well at one point. Thankfully DH was here and was able to rearrange his morning so he could take DS to school. Have just woken back up and feel fine now.

Have no idea what triggers them as they are so far apart.

Wonder if it's a sign of menopause? Started getting them at 11 when starting puberty so suppose it makes sense that shifting hormone levels could trigger them again.

Slightly panicking now as want to try IVF again in Jan/Feb.

Don't even know why I posted really! Nothing anyone can do!

I'd never heard it was a sign of menopause. I suffer from what they call I think 'cluster headaches' or cluster migraines - so they can last for about 2 weeks - which they are at the minute and then disappear for a while only to return. I am supposed to take beta-blockers but don't like the idea of them. If it was a really bad one it can last over a few days - its miserable, but I wouldn't worry too much. Its completely new to me that it signals menopause. Best of luck with the IVF.

Not sure if I explained clearly! I started getting migraines at 11 and doc put it down to puberty - fluctuating hormone levels etc. They all but stopped when I was about 18. I have had about 6/7 in since then (am 43 now).

Just seemd to make sense that if I am entering early menopause then the same fluctuating hormone levels might trigger them again. My Mum hasn't had one at all since going through menopause and she used to get them regularly.

I did do a cycle of IVF in October so I suppose hormones could be settling down still after that. Maybe that was it.

Thanks for your reply though - they are horrid aren't they? Mind you my sister gets them dreadfully - affects her speech, mood, appetite for 4/5 days.

Thanks Fio - can you tell am panicking slightly?

Lying there at 5am wide awake with a shitty headache will do that to you!

Will get some migraleve when next at home (in Budapest - not sue if can get here - may call doc and ask).

i get migraines with 'aura'. has anyone else had these. my vision goes and my mouth goes numb just before i get a really bad headache. i only get one every so often.

FLAMEinEckItsWiiDay · 08/12/2006 13:20

It could be the hormones settling after the ivf - I think that is more likely than early menopause (guessing there isn't a family history).

I have to go to sleep (preferably with 2 syndol tablets) as soon as I get migraine swiggly lines in front of my eyes, if I don't, or get woken before it is gone (I wake naturally at the end of it if I'm not woken), I end up with a week long killer headache - not quite migraine, but much worse than a headache.

I've never found a reason/trigger for them, luckily they are rare

BudaBauble · 08/12/2006 13:58

zoeuk1 - yes I get the aura too - I get patches of "blankness" where I can only see part of something. When I used to get them at school I would be sent home and walked into a lamp-post one time as I just didn't see it - the school used to get a teacher to drive me home after that.

Flame - yes - sleep is the only thing that does it. I woke this morning at 5am with the headache so obv slept through the aura bit. Took some nurofen and tried to get back to sleep - just dozed till I heard DH up and organised for him to take DS to school. Then slept for an hour and was fine when I woke.

They are horrible aren't they?

Just had another one!

Was shopping with a friend and felt one coming on. Had Migraleve which I took but it still came on although fairly mild.

Wish I knew why I was getting them.

foxinsocks · 12/12/2006 14:52

mine are completely hormone related - I get one every time I get my period ggrrr.

Dh only gets them every so often but for the first time in AGES, he has had 2 in the last week.

If you look at the migraine trust website, you can fill out a migraine diary. They are quite helpful - it's what helped me figure out my trigger.

drummumadrumming · 12/12/2006 14:59

I got migraines during my pregnancy... (weird flashy lights) I put it down to hormones..
but I had one about 6 months ago that I put down to stress, with this one I had the weird flashy lights, but I also couldn't speak coherently, and my right hand went numb... funily enough I had one exactly the same again last week as well...
It comes on really quick...

Are you worrying about anything?
Do they run in families?
is it the aura/flashy lights that makes it a migrain and not just a headache...
and do you say meegrane or migraine

BudaBauble · 12/12/2006 16:44

Thanks for link foxinsocks - will check out diary.

Drummumadrumming - not worrying about anything - am not a worrier really. The do run in families - my Mum used to get them and my sisters get them too.

I think some people ge tthe aura and some don't. Had a weird on when PG where my tongue was numb.

I say m-I-graine!

Let us know what he said...

FrayedKnotRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 13/12/2006 15:18

I know it's not very likely that teh same bugs will be doing the rounds in Budapest but we recently had some sort of viral infection which seememd to trigger migraines in me - most bizarre as the other symptoms wer sore throat & v.v. tired.

Although, I am just off to start another thread about early menopause...

Hope you get on OK at Dr..

zoeuk1 · 13/12/2006 21:30

i get the numbness in my mouth too. and also my left hand goes numb. it makes me really panic. they are horrible. the aura, etc before the headache botheres me more than the actual headache to be honest.

BudaBauble · 14/12/2006 12:32

Well went to doc (who wasn't too surprised to see me as I had met her at a party on Friday night and she overheard me mentioning the migraines - small town here!).

So she has prescribed magnesium - I had looked migraine up on internet and discovered it can be a lack of magnesium.

She recommended I cut back on caffeine - I don;t drink much coffee but I do drinks lots of tea and I take it strong.

She recommended I exercise 3 times a week.

And she gave me some medication to take if I get one.

Will see how it goes.

Am feeling very down today and suspect now the whole thing may be related to stress/doing the IVf/it not working/lots of people PG etc etc. Things not great with DH either whcih doesn't help. Have just cried all the way home from Tesco which is just not like me.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 14/12/2006 15:08

oh buda, hope you are feeling a bit better now

a few tips that might help - my migraine hangs around the whole time my period is on (ggrr) but I have noticed a few things make it worse.

It makes me REALLY crave sweets/sugary things/caffeine but if I eat any of that, it makes my head hurt MUCH worse so if you have been eating quick sugar fix foods, it might be an idea to cut back on them when your head hurts (same goes for chocolate).

I don't think stress helps though I hope you've been able to relax a bit more.

saythatagain · 14/12/2006 16:10

I've had migraines since I was about 6 years old. White crumbly cheese (Cheshire) is a definate trigger for me but I still get them anyway. The aura/heightened awareness followed by the part vision, ghastly headache, vicious vomitting and numbness starting in my left arm, moving across my body to the other side and then down my legs.
Last month I had 4 in a 2-day period - so awful it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end just thinking about it. This prompted me to make a visit to the docs where I was prescribed Rizatriptan in wafer form so it worked quickly.....Well, I had one last Friday and took one with not much sucess.
I am ever hopeful of there being some magical tablet that will zap it away in seconds and I pray that my daughter has not inherited this bloody awful thing.

merrylissiemas · 14/12/2006 16:13

i suffered migraines for years and i started drinking decaff everything, and that really helped. poor love, i hope you feel better soon

BudaBauble · 14/12/2006 16:40

Thanks everyone for the sympathy and the tips. Feeling very PMTish but had last period on 29 Nov so shouldn't be.

Just shouted at my poor DS for nothing. Then threw a hairbrush at the wall and cried for 20 mins.

DH out tonight thankfully as I am likely to kill him just for existing. Bath and early night for me.

May book a few sessions with an acupuncurist.

And now have another migraine. Great.

Have had to call DH home from his partner dinner - will go down well as we are not going to Xmas party on Sat either. Oh well.

saythatagain..its funny you should say about the cheese. the last time i had one of these migraines, was when id eaten some bio yoghurt. maybe dairy products are my 'trigger'.
