So, off I trots to the chemist to buy yet another bundle of worming tablets Mind you - we have been clear for about 4 months which is good for us!

Anyway, my question is:

How long do the tablets take to work. Do I change all the beds today, give us all the tablets this afternoon OR give the tablets this afternoon and change all the beds tomorrow?

OP posts:
geekgrrl · 05/12/2006 09:59

they take a couple of days unfortunately. Do the beds tomorrow (or today and tomorrow, if you get as grossed out as I do )

I also recommend giving another dose in two weeks' time, just to make absolutely sure you've not been reinfected.

rabbitrabbit · 05/12/2006 10:01

Hi poppies, how did you find out he had worms? What were the symptoms? I'm asking as my ds has been off-colour for a while and someone did suggest this.

poppiesinalinewithtinsel · 05/12/2006 10:04

He usually is itchy at night around his bottom but this time he wasn't. He actually saw one in his poo ewwwww.

rabbitrabbit · 05/12/2006 10:05

Thanks poppies-am not sure I'd cope too well with that in his poo

Leander · 05/12/2006 10:05

Ds has just had this, change the beds for the next week, give thetablets today, shower the kids before they go to bed and when they get up, its a pain but it works.
rabit check his bum after he has had a poo check the poo too and also check his bum when he is asleep this is when they are most active i think.Ds wasn't ill he just had a really itchy bottom. hth.

rabbitrabbit · 05/12/2006 10:08

Thanks Leander. I'm going to check his poo next time he goes just to be sure (TMI? ). His appetite seems to have rocketed but he doesn't have any itches-but it's certainly worth checking out. Thanks

Leander · 05/12/2006 10:10

oh yes his appetite was huge he just wouldnt stop eating

HoraceWimp · 05/12/2006 10:12

they take a couple of days to work

poppiesinalinewithtinsel · 05/12/2006 10:13

DS1's appetite doesnt change. He still eats like a sparrow

So I'll give the tablets today. Change the beds when? Tomorrow? Shower kids tonight and tomorrow morning. Wear pants in bed? Will that help? Retreat in 2 weeks and do the whole thing all over again - yes?

OP posts:
poppiesinalinewithtinsel · 05/12/2006 10:17

couple of days you say. So change the beds on Thursday then? yes?

And DS2 is under 2 so I am assuming I cannot treat him - havent seen any in his nappies so am hoping he is ok. On that note I have a complaint... why oh why do they do a family pack of tablets for 4 ?? There are 5 of us so that means I have to buy 3 packs to treat us now and in 2 weeks (when DS2 is over 2 that is). Its going to cost us a small fortune each time.

I wish DS1 would stop putting his fingers in his mouth I am sure thats the reason he keeps getting them.

Leander · 05/12/2006 10:21

Change the beds every day for the next few days, deffo make him wear pants in bed and keep his nails short, shower kids every morn and night for next few days its exhausting but it needs to be done. You can give the baby Prispen, dd had no symptoms but after the meds it kinds of flushed them out and we saw them in her nappy. Deffo retreat in 2 weeks but the babs can only have 1 treatment in 4 weeks.
hope this made sense its a bit jummbled

Leander · 05/12/2006 10:22

Go to your gp for the meds you dont pay for them then.

geekgrrl · 05/12/2006 10:24

poppies, how old is ds2? To be honest, I gave mine ovex when he was over 1.5 yrs because chances are that he will get it, with the eggs being airborne and all that.
Superdrug do an own-brand family pack, I think. Much cheaper. There's 5 of us too, so I sympathise!

poppiesinalinewithtinsel · 05/12/2006 10:44

DS2 is 20 months.

The eggs are airbourne ?

change the beds every day

A suggestion I had was to get rid of the playdough - eggs on fingers - into playdough - hands in mouths.... Isn't it a PITA - and yes, I got them too!

poppiesinalinewithtinsel · 05/12/2006 13:05

Haven't had the playdough out for months Its probably all hard now anyway!

Tut, just realised, thread title was meant to be DS1 not DS2 DS2 is far too young to notice worms in his poo

Sorry to hijack - but my ds complains of an itchy bottom most nights - but no sign of worms in poo, around bottom etc. dd also woke up screaming beacuse of a sore bottom a week or so ago - but again no sign of worms (I even had a torch out looking during the night!) Do you think it's worms - as I know you're not meant to treat them unless it is!

poppiesinalinewithtinsel · 06/12/2006 12:55

My GP once said that the 'cellotape' test was good - although I have never tried it myself.

When they get into bed you stick some cellotape over their bottom hole (if they will let you!!). The worms come out at night to lay eggs and will stick to the cellotape and you will clearly see in the morning as they will be stuck fast. Apparently it works.

Whats the harm in treating just in case?!! When one child in the family has worms you have to treat everybody even though not necessarily everybody has them. Don't see the harm treating just in case myself.

OP posts:
poppiesinalinewithtinsel · 06/12/2006 12:57

oh and you may not necessarily see them in the poo. Last time we had an outbreak I was sure DD was clear but of course treated her anyway and heypresto, the medicine flushed them out and there they were

poppiesinalinewithtinsel have u ever tried to liquid stuff, bought it when ds2 whos 2.5 had them the other week and the boots pharmacy said it kills them as soon as it gets into their system.

poppiesinalinewithtinsel · 06/12/2006 18:05

really? Is that the Boots own make? I'll remember that for next time. Thanks.

OP posts:
corrina28 · 06/12/2006 18:12

NO IT WAS OVEX COST ME £7 BUT IT TREATED ALL OF US AND THERE IS STILL HALF LEFT IN THE BOTTLE.

poppiesinalinewithtinsel · 06/12/2006 18:16

Does Ovex come in liquid form then? I have just spent £5.99 for a pack of 4 Ovex tablets and I'll need to buy another packet in two weeks plus the Prispen I had to buy for the under 2. costing me a fortune.

OP posts:
corrina28 · 06/12/2006 18:18

yeah i went into our locals boots and they asked me if i wanted tablets or liquid, ds2 is only 2.5 and i found it was easier to get him to have the liquid stuff then to try n get a tablet down him.
