Thrush - someone help me get rid of it!!!!

JoshandJamie · 30/11/2006 12:22

I have thrush (again). I have taken the single capsule (can't remember what it's called - similar to the Canestan one but not branded). Took it on Monday. Still no signs of it going. Have been using Canestan cream - does nothing.

I have used gyno-daktarin pessaries in the past but don't have any left - not sure if I need a prescription for them or not but can't face going back to the doctor again (have been there about 6 times in two weeks with sick kids).

But this weekend DH and I are actually having a night away together in a hotel (only the second time in 3 years) and I finally have contraception and it would be nice if we could actually have sex. But there's no way it's going to happen if I still have this bloody thrush - it is just too sore.

Any suggestions or ideas to get rid of it fast?

Sorry, no help but just my ouchiest empathy - dp finally gave up the requests for sex when he saw how red and swollen I was. I've just got mine reduced (though not absolutely gone) after months of agony through the single capsule - I think you can take a second capsule can't you? Good luck.

HuwEdwards · 30/11/2006 12:34

bio (active)-yogurt on yer fanjo each night - shower off each morning.

Only ever had thrush once - cleared it up within 3 days.

mrsratty · 30/11/2006 12:38

I have had it soooo many times. The capsule takes a few days to work. Lat time it took about four days and I really thought it was never going to go. If it doesn't clear up themn you will have to go to the DR's and get a few gyno-daktarin pesseries. Yoghurt has never worked for, I guess it depneds how bad it is.

JoshandJamie · 30/11/2006 12:59

Years ago when I lived in SA they had a product called Betadine Douche. It was a weird looking contraption with vile coloured liquid that you put in it and squirted up your fanjo. It flushed it out - and at times was both fascinating and vile to see what emerged - but it worked. Have never seen it anywhere else though. Might have to head off to get yogurts instead.

A friend of mine puts the yoghurt on a tampon and then pushes that up which does the trick. I don't really think yoghurt works if its really bad though.

You will hate me for asking but are you positive it's thrush and not some other kind of infection? The oral medicine is really effective, so if it's not working, maybe it's not thrush?

For prevention, you can get a product called Acijel over the counter or on prescription if you get yours free. It's not expensive. To this day, I bless the doctor who told me about this product (and curse all the ones I saw who didn't know about it ). You use it in a plunger thing (like canesten cream). It makes the environment in the vagina more acidic which makes it more hostile towards flora and fauna of all descriptions. Use it once a day at night but you will need a pantyliner during the day b/c the residue may stain your underwear.

Tortington · 30/11/2006 18:21

no - accept it, embrace it and make soap from it

JendleWendleBells · 30/11/2006 18:24

You can also get tea tree oil pessaries - you may have to search on line for them. Tea tree is an effective and natural broad spectrum antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral - so it should be good for all seasons!

A homemade version of Acijel is to get a large cotton wool make-up remover pad and soak in a vinegar and water solution and then fold in half or roll up a bit and put in your vaginal and squeeze. If you do it with cold water it's very soothing.

JendleWendleBells · 30/11/2006 18:25

Final suggestion - I have heard of peeled raw garlic cloves being inserted in the area. Garlic is antifungal and antibacterial. Never tried it myself though!

NotQuiteCockney · 30/11/2006 18:26

Hmm, hard to make it go fast, imo. I've had luck with yogurt in the fanjo, and also garlic pessaries (not kidding) but when it's severe, you need the drugs.

You might want to find out what's causing it, so you can stop getting it? You want to be sure your fanjo is well-aired, don't wear tights a lot, cotton knickers only, and maybe consider reducing sugar in your diet. (Any chance you've got undiagnosed type II diabetes? That causes thrush like mad, shocker.)

JendleWendleBells · 30/11/2006 18:30

Well almost final - there are different kinds of yeast that cause thrush. Gyno-Daktarin may not be effective against all of them. I think it contains Miconazole. You may want to give Canesten a try because it contains Clotrimazole which is a different type of anti-fungal. But as I said before the oral medicine is really great and in theory it kills the yeast from everywhere in your body, so if you had a small resistant pocket somewhere in your gut or your fanny or your bowel, the tablet will sort that out. The pessaries can only kill what they can reach.

Please no one who is pregnant take the tablet - you can't!

DimpledThighs · 30/11/2006 18:37

also get your dp to treat his wonderful weapon of love as he could be giving it straight back to you. Same cream and they have to get on with it or no sex.

also echo NQC - cut out sugar in your diet for a while as it feeds thrush - cut the sugar and you effectively starve it!

JoshandJamie · 30/11/2006 18:59

Well thanks for all those exotic sounding remedies. I can just imagine the garlic one going down a treat.

I can't imagine what other infection it could be. I have had sex once since Aug (with my DH) so he can't be giving it back to me and it can't be anything else sexually transmitted because that would need to involve sex.

I haven't had any contraception (other than two small children who keep me awake all night so am too tired for sex) but also really don't want anymore, so have been using abstinence. This weekend was supposed to be the end of the drought for my poor DH.

I went and bought another Canesten tablet today so will take that - and given that I'm on my own tonight and tomorrow night, might do some experimenting with vinegar and garlic. Sounds like I'll be pickling my bits. Chutney anyone??

JoshandJamie · 30/11/2006 19:00

By the way, the 'I don't want anymore' was referring to children, not sex.

And yes, I was tested for diabetes but several years back. Maybe I need to go again. Not sure whether it's just because I am mega run down. Can too much wine cause it? I don't have much sugar in my diet but wine I certainly do.

Hi - I am also a regular sufferer of thrush and I use acidopholus. It is basically a good bacteria that you can buy from any health shop and it helps to balance the good/bad bacteria in your body.
It is also found in live bio-yoghurts but I find taking a tablet much easier.
Once you have opened the bottle you should keep them in your fridge.
I have also suffered with recurring boughts of bacterial vaginosis which is also cleared up after a few days of taking acidopholus - a miracle cure IMO!!
Good luck and have a great weekend (I would say though that it might be worth using a condom as you really don't want to infect your husband - men can have thrush without any nasty symptoms but then pass it back to you - nice!!)

Wine will probaly not help! If I eat to much sugar I feel itchy the next day.

Garlic and vinegar isn't going to smell too good on your romantic weekend, I really laughed when I saw those suggestions!!!

Gillian76 · 30/11/2006 19:11

I used to be plagued. Cutting down the sugar definitely helps. Acidophilus didn't do much for me.

The other thing that has made a massive difference but may gross you out is cotton washable panty liners and sanitary towels.

sleepfinder · 30/11/2006 19:22

I found with a really REALLY bad case of Thrush the only thing that got rid of it was a combination of an oral tablet (with LOTS of water) and the three day Canesten internal treatment (pessaries) - the one off booster just didn't do it alone. It was the continued use of the 3 day treatment and the pill that removed all trace.

Good luck.

lambchop2 · 30/11/2006 19:32

diflucan - from the chemist. It's expensive, about £12 but i've used it twice when nothing else worked and felt immediately better.

fizzbuzz · 30/11/2006 19:32

Hi, just discovered this thread. Am completely tormented by thrush, and when I get it, the only thing that shifts it for me is homeopathic remedies....Go and see a homeopath.
OR
You can get loads of anti-fungals on prescription, you might need longer than a 1 day course. I needed 14 day courses until I became resistant to ALLof them. They are: Sporanox, Diflucan, and Ketakanazole. However thrush kept returning until I went to a homeopath which shifted it for good.
Also someone on the thread mentioned something that you use that they got in SA. I think something called Replenze does the same thing.
It is usually used during menopause, but I know someone who swore by it.

chintzy · 30/11/2006 19:34

I had thrush loads. Eventually a combination of a short course of itraconazole tablets(sporonox), boil washing all my underwear, treating my husband with cream and also (bizarrely) using lubricant when we had sex stopped it coming back. I didn't like canesten cream - it made the itching worse.
Good luck. It is AWFUL. Can remember vividly sitting in a cool bath in the middle of the night as the only way to stop scratching. Go and see your doctor.

Tea tree oil on a tampton is also very soothing.
However be careful that you haven't got something called vestibulitis. (I of course have also had this..)Basically it is caused by overusing thrush creams, which cause the vestibular glands at the entrance to the vagina, to become irritated.
It is actually a skin problem rather than a fungus or infection. It itches and feels sore, but shouldn't hurt when you have sex. It is sometimes caused "itching vulva syndrome" (lovely).
Avoid all bubblebaths, only use unbleached sanitary protection, and a mild hydrocortisone is supposed to help.

JoshandJamie · 30/11/2006 19:59

You know what, why can't the nice things in life like wine, bread, sugar etc just do something nice for you for once?????? I've given up on sleep. I've given up on sex. I really don't have much chocolate. But toast with marmite and wine are two things I'm just not sure I can live without.

I've used diflucan before and it was the only thing that worked for me too - but I thought you needed a prescription for it.
