They've been dry and sore for weeks. Nothing is budging it. I've tried lip salves, antiseptics, camomile, witch hazel, Blistex moisturiser, Vaseline moisturiser, nothing works.

I used to get it years ago when I was stressed, during exams etc. The only thing that shifted it was hydrocortisone cream but according to the chemist apparently I'm not allowed to put that on my face now!

I look like I've smeared lip liner round my gob. Hmm

I use Elizabeth Arden 8 hr cream. It's like antiseptic Vaseline. It works for me. I keep applying it through out the day. The tube lasts a couple of years so ok for the cost.

BabyGanoush · 30/08/2015 22:30

Ask pharmacist or even GP?

If you are not allergic to Lanoline or vegan, Lansinoh nipple cream (or other medicinal grade lanoline) cures cracked/sore nipples and works equally well on lips. Pricey but lasts forever, I always keep some (get chapped lips in winter badly)

TeamFinn · 30/08/2015 22:31

This. It's amazing.

TeamFinn · 30/08/2015 22:33

Lansinoh also works really well.

IAmcuriousyellow · 30/08/2015 22:34

Cymex. Comes in a tiny tube, meant for cold sores but amazing for chapped lips. Don't let the urea put you off! Truly - a tiny dab will make things instantly better.

LimitedSedition · 30/08/2015 22:34

Thirding Lasinoh!

BabyGanoush · 30/08/2015 22:34

Lansinoh is very pure, no perfume etc.

BoomChickenSoup · 30/08/2015 22:36

eumovate - it is a mild steroid so you wouldn't want to use it for too long but 3-4 days won't do long term damage. After that an emollient aimed at eczema would probably keep it under control.

SnozzberryPie · 30/08/2015 22:40

Have you tried carmex?

Blisteze usually does the trick for me. Except it's been bought up by blistex and added to their collection so this one: www.boots.com/en/Blistex-Relief-Cream-5g_1258505/

Not sure if that's the one you've tried already. Don't bother with their other ones.

Is it actually chapped lips and not something else? It's not at the corners of your mouth or anything?

Once you've sorted it use a lip balm that does not have ingredients that actually dry out your lips like camphor phenyl and menthol. There are strong but opposing views on whether petroleum jelly (ie vaseline) dries out lips or not so easiest just to avoid it. Best to stick to bees wax ones like burts bees or Dr organic or summat.

bluebump · 30/08/2015 22:47

Is it the medicated Blistex you've tried? It's the one that's supposed to be helpful for cold sores etc but I just use it for chapped lips, it's brilliant.

holmessweetholmes · 30/08/2015 22:48

Carmex. And never lick your lips.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 30/08/2015 23:09

Wow you lot are brilliant. Jeffrey doesn't know what he's missing. Grin

It's the Blistex moisturiser I've got. Doing nowt. Some great suggestions there and I will probably buy each and every one to find one that works for me.

It is worse in one corner. I did wonder if it was a bit like a cold sore virus.

HexBramble · 30/08/2015 23:12

Witch hazel?! Ouch!
Are you feeling ok otherwise?
May be worth you buying Vit C and Zinc effervescent tablets - quite a refreshing drink once dropped in a glass of cold water. May help the healing from the inside.

Foreverconfused · 30/08/2015 23:14

I bite my lips a lot so lips are always sore and dry. I find a thick layer of nipple cream (with lanolin in ) at night soothes them Smile Haven't had to use a lip balm during the day in months !!

bugslife · 30/08/2015 23:14

Vitamin C deficiency can cause cracking in the corner of your mouth? Invest in a good multi-vit and mineral and some omega 3.

sadie9 · 30/08/2015 23:15

It's the Blistex Relief creme you need not the moisturiser one. The one that used to be Blisteze as the other poster says. .

wafflyversatile · 30/08/2015 23:15

it's the blistex relief cream you need, not the moisturiser.

Also google angular chelitis just in case it's that.

DollyTwat · 30/08/2015 23:18

Ds1 had a sore bit on the top of his lip for about a year. We had prescription cream, he used lip salves, I tried everything. Dr said it was lick eczema

Then I trawled the internet one day and learnt that lip salves make this type of thing worse and I found this Aquaphor On-The-Go Dual Pack 2/ 0.5 oz Ointment www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001IAG7G2/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_Fc44vbNGQSEZK

It is amazing. He rarely gets it now and this sorts it out in 2 days if he does

somersetsinger · 30/08/2015 23:18

Evening primrose oil. Not to put on your lips, but taken as a capsule. It takes a few weeks to work, so hope other people's suggestions work first. It cleared up the eczema that had plagued me for my entire life. Worth a try to prevent it in the future.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 30/08/2015 23:27

Hex I tried everything I could find in the house. It was combined in a cream with the camomile.

DollyTwat your name for some reason really made me laugh so thanks for that. Grin

Hope the chemists is open tomorrow.

I do drink a lot of tea, would that keep me hydrated? Probably six-eight mugs a day?

DollyTwat · 31/08/2015 00:28
Grin Seriously try the one I linked to, I spent a fortune before I found this. It's cheap enough too
MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 31/08/2015 23:45

Well needless to say every chemist and pharmacy was shut today and all I could find was the medicated Blisteze in the supermarket. So I'll give that a try first.

I don't think it's angular chelitis. Although it is slightly cracked in one corner but I think that's just where it's got sore. It doesn't mention the skin round the lips being inflamed which mine feels like it is.

I wonder if the incessant application of lip balm all summer has in fact exacerbated the problem?

NoelHeadbands · 31/08/2015 23:54

Once you've managed to get them ok again, instead of using lip balms etc (which in my case can often make my lips drier and bring on cold sores), you can rub a finger in the sides of your nose and crease of your chin, then smooth that finger along your lip line.

You don't get that ultra moist look (let's hope Grin) but it does moisturise your lips nicely
