How many lots of AB's have your children had in their lives?

Just marvelling at the fact that dd1 is five and a half and has never had AB's, whereas ds is five months and has had EIGHT courses of AB's.

None yet, age 3.5, but did have a permacold for the first 2 years of his life I think

Our first bout of diarrhoea this week, as well, so pretty good really.

Sorry to hear little ds has needed so much care emkana. Thank god you have access to good medical care.

DD is 8 and got 2nd lot today!

SnoGloworm · 21/11/2006 21:08

none yet (aged 3 and 5)
we use lots of echinacea and probiotics and other herbal bits and bobs though.

Bozza · 21/11/2006 21:57

I love the expression "permacold" franny. It describes both my two to a tee for the first two years, as you say. DS also had a recurrence at 4 1/2 when he started school and was exposed to a different set of germs.

PeachesMcLean · 21/11/2006 21:59

Emkana, it's the large supply of chicken nuggets dd1 has had that are full of nasty chemically antibiotics - hence giving a boosted immune system.... You clearly need to start weaning ds onto turkey twizzlers asap. (Sorry - have been reading your other thread mouth ajar - bigotry contagious. Seriously though, poor your ds, and poor you - constant illness)

DS (5) has had a couple of courses, plus eyedrops (does that count?) but then turned out to have allergy to penicillin, so am curious as to how he'll respond to the next version..

DS 3.1yrs has had 2 doses, one for tonsilitis and one for infection in his willy.

DD 11mths has had approx 7 or 8 courses due to chest infections and they are usually hand in hand with some steroids.

iwouldloveadollypleaseSanta · 21/11/2006 22:33

dd age 10 months has had two lots, one in first few weeks for infected cord stump and second for weird bacterial foot swelling - obviously a baby prone to strange infections..........

peegeeweegee · 21/11/2006 22:52

Ds (age 7) has had two lots, one lot aged 2 with ear infection, and one lot aged 6 with ear infection.

Dd (age nearly 4) none.

controlfreaky2 · 21/11/2006 22:55

ds's 9 and 7. none so far.

notasheep · 21/11/2006 23:13

dd 7 none
ds 2 2

PinkTinsel · 21/11/2006 23:40

dd 22 months - none

ds 4 months - none

and it will bloody stay that way except for dire emergancies.

i spent my childhood being pumped full of fucking augmentin and the like and now not only do none of them work but they make me violently sick. it was only when i stoppe going to the doctor that i stopped getting severe tonsillitis 5/6 times every year

iwouldloveadollypleaseSanta · 21/11/2006 23:59

i agree with tinsel in that antibiotics should be avoided for colds/random illness that might or might not be bacterial. but there are some situations where they can save lives and have done

PinkTinsel · 22/11/2006 00:04

oh i completely agree caboose. i just have serious issues with the reasons gp so often dole them out.

my kids will have them if necessary, but only if completely 100% necessary.

Ellbell · 22/11/2006 00:08

for little ds, emkana.

IIRC my two (6 and 4) have had one lot each. DD1 for a wee infection and DD2 when she cut her face open and had stitches, just to prevent infection.

somethingsdrooling · 22/11/2006 00:23

19 mos - none

eidsvold · 22/11/2006 04:13

Emkana - dd1 had some when she was first born to fight an infection, then more when she had her surgery - all sorts of things through her system, then more when she had the odd chest infection, a number of courses - on them for about a month straight prior to her having her surgery last year. She is 4 and I have lost count.

Dd2 - coming up 2 - 1 lot for bad bout of tonsilitis.

eldestgirl · 22/11/2006 05:34

DS1 (5): About 3? Ear infection, couple of chest infections.
DS2 (3): About 6 I think. Used to get horrible tonsilitus everytime he had a cold, plus a post surgery course.
Not sure but bacteria seems to grow faster and better here (Singapore) and despite the fact that Drs are happy to hand out ABs like smarties, I don't give in unless am at wit's end with breathing/pain/coughing problems.
I won't take them unless absolutely necessary as they give me terrible thrush.

curlew · 22/11/2006 06:44

Dd 10 - once when she stood got an infected foot after standing on a splinter of glass.
Ds 5 - never. He was prescribed them once for a chest infection but I couldn't get him to take them and it cleared up on its own. (thank heavens)

I put ti down to keeping a REALLY dirty house - they've had to develop good immunities to survive!

Interestingly, my dd had a horrible ear infection when she was 5. We were up all night and I took her to the doctor first thing in the morning and he said that as the pain had stopped and the ear drum had burst he wouldn't prescribe antibiotics - we had to go back the next day for him to look at it again, but in his experience antibiotics were only necessary for really persistent ear infections. I was surprised but pleased, and have treated the very occasional sore ear as he advised ever since - rest, warmth and Calpol. Luckily we've never had one that has lasted more than a day or two (I'd be hammering on the surgery door if we did) Are my two a MN record? I

Heartmum2Jamie · 22/11/2006 11:49

Ds1, who is 5: Averages out at about 1 lot a year, mainly when he was a baby. We were with a bad dr who gave antib's for anything and everything . In the last 3 years, he has been on antib's once for an ear infection.

Ds2, who is almost 2.5: I have lost count! He had his first lot of antib's at 3 weeks old for an UTI, then was put on long term prophylactic antib's. His next lot was for a skin infection caused by weekping eczema a week before he turned 6 months. Then a few more for chest infections before he was found to have a heart condition. He had 2 lots directly after his surgery at 9 months. After that, I think he has had a further 3 or 4 lots, mainly for chest or ear infections.

Think dd had them a couple of times when she was little - but prescribed in Ireland where I think they are a little more likely to prescribe than here. Ds1 once I think, ds2 never
