DS Has An Odd Smell On His Breath

I cant quite explain it... my first though was almost a white spirit kind of smell... its like a gentle toxic smell if that makes sense? Hes always had it, but I keep forgetting to ask about it. I presumed it was normal, but, when it gets strong again, its quite odd. Is it normal?

When does it happen - could be a low sugar thing

ledodgychristmasjumper · 19/11/2006 20:49

It sounds like Ketones. It can be a symptom of Diabetes so may be worth seeing the GP. However I think it can happen if they haven't eaten r drank for while or something, I don't know I can't remember the other explanation. Sorry not much use I know!

MrsSpoon · 19/11/2006 20:51

My DS1's breath stinks almost permanently, beginning to think the same as Perigrine, that or dehydration, he doesn't drink enough.

expatinscotland · 19/11/2006 20:51

Is he bunged up? How old is he?

ledodgychristmasjumper · 19/11/2006 20:52

Is it a bit like pear drops?

ledodgychristmasjumper · 19/11/2006 21:19

I'm sure he's fine but I would mention it to your gp just to make sure.

Quootiepie · 19/11/2006 21:19

okies, thanks

Really didn't want to jump straight to the Diabetes answer - actually wrote it and deleted as didn't want to worry you, but everybody else seems to be thinking along the same lines.

What is his fluid intake like?

And I would recommend a trip to the GP.

If they ask for a sample. Pop some cotton balls into his nappy and then squeeze the contents into the given jar.

DS was tested as he drank such a lot - and his dad has type 1 diabetes. He is fine, he just needed to driink a lot!

Quootiepie · 19/11/2006 21:39

well, he feeds every 2-3 hours, and has a few sips of water twice a day at meals. DHs dad had diabetis, as did his dad... is it heriditary?

OP posts:
LadyOfThePoinsettias · 19/11/2006 21:41

dh has type 1 too and a while ago i smelt it on ds1s breath. i went bananas and took a wee sample to the doc straight away, but he was fine. it was because he hadnt eaten for a while. so although it is a symptom, other things are usually noticed long before that ie: loss of weight. so try not to worry.

Perigrine · 19/11/2006 21:41

Apparently not according to my GP but I am not sure! How old is he?

LadyOfThePoinsettias · 19/11/2006 21:41

it can be heriditary. dhs nan has it. it skips a generation in our family.

Perigrine · 19/11/2006 21:43

Totally agree with LOTP. Don't panic, but get it checked

Quootiepie · 19/11/2006 21:43

nearly 8 months...

Perigrine · 19/11/2006 21:44

Also skipped a generation here but was told by the GP, that it wasn't!!!!!! Still not convinced, will post on Grannysnet about the GK's

LadyOfThePoinsettias · 19/11/2006 21:47

peri, so far it has come up again and again without fail, so we are preparing ourselves for one of the ds' kids to have it.
dhs brother does not have it, just dh. it seems only one gets it but it is always every other gen.
it's quite a heartbreaking thought and dh feels guilty that one of our grandchildren will prob. have it.

LadyOfThePoinsettias · 19/11/2006 21:48

gps are crazy! they tell you different things depending on what your postcode is if discovered on here!
