2yo DD has been a bit off colour for the past 2 or 3 days but I had put it down to hay fever reactions. I was phoned up from nursery today as she had a temperature (38.??? - can't remember exactly) and they wanted to give her calpol. She has also been weepy and wanting to lay on cushions a lot of the day - very unlike her. One minute she has been fine, next complaining of various aches. She often gts her headache, tummyaches, etc mixed up at the moment.

Getting her ready for a bath a while back and she is now covered in a rash. It is on her tummy, back, neck, and tops of legs (seems to be spreading down) - that I have noticed mainly. They are very tiny little spots, only very slightly raised, quite close together, no blisters and blebs, etc. Doesn't seem to be itchy.

Is it just heat rash from the warm apartment and temperature she has had?
Or could it be anything else?

Any advice or help please!!!

Big question now for me and DD are about nursery tomorrow. If she wakes up, still with a rash all over, I gather I can't take her into nursery? Even if she seems quite well in herself?

Agree except we had lunch last thursday with a pregnant friend. They said she'd be fine if immunised, just spoken to her and she's not.

hercules · 04/05/2004 19:51

I wpuldnt hula.

Jimjams · 04/05/2004 19:54

how pregnant hercules? If she's past the 1st trimester its fine anyway. Also they will test her for antibodies anyway- she may well be immune anyway. I'm immune from catching it at 1.

Awful to have to tell someone though. Years ago before having ds1 I had to tell a friend that a friend of mine (adult) that she had been at dinner with had come out in rubella 2 days later- she was immune anyway- and her baby is now about 7!

Jimjams · 04/05/2004 19:55

Hula- the nursery probably wouldn't accept her unless you knew it was an allergic rash or something.

Tissy · 04/05/2004 19:55

hercules, they should have checked her rubella antibodies, though when she was "booked in" so she should know if she is immune or not- I'm sure they would have told her if she wasn't immune.

hercules · 04/05/2004 19:56

21 weeks. She had no idea of the risks when i told her so she didnt panic.

Hulababy · 04/05/2004 19:56

I won't hercules. I will be okay to have the morning off and DH will have to come home and do the afternoon - I have a big moderation meeting.

This is her 3rd so i'm sure they would have done something. She's hopefully forgotten getting it done.

hercules · 04/05/2004 19:57

I hated having time off school. Creates far more work.

Hulababy · 04/05/2004 20:00

Hercules - not too bad tomorrow. Y10 are on work placement, and then have 2 GNVQ lessons (same class)after that in the morning. The Y12's are on coursework and knwo what they are doing. I can be online at home for support during the lesson for them too. They have an e-mail address that they can 'talk' to me on.

oh 21 weeks she's fine anyway- and they will have tested her immunity in each pregnancy- no worries at all.

katzguk · 04/05/2004 20:09

hope she's better soon, and just to reiterate whats already been said chicken pox are doing the rounds DD's nursery have had lots of cases just waiting for DD to coem down with it.

bunny2 · 04/05/2004 20:11

Hulababy, my ds has had exactly the same rash for over a week. He has also been a bit off colour but not really ill. After googling "rashes" I was convinced it was scarlet fever but I think a non-specific viral rash is more likely, he has had them b4 and I have rushed him to A&E in tears! Not this time though, I have just looked out for any other warning signs but there are none to worry about so far.

Hulababy · 05/05/2004 07:27

She slept well and is not ill. However this morning the rash is more obvious, especially on her face (or cheeks). Going to take her to the doctors first thing to rule anything worse out.

DD had MMR so surely it can't be german measles???

Going away at weekend to see friends - not seen them for months and months and only chance for us to all get together, typical eh? Will still go so long as nothing bad.

ds1's rubella came originally from an MMR vaccinated child. The vax isn't that great! In fact said child spread it everywhere as his mother thought (fairly enough) that it couldn't be rubella as he had had MMR.

Hulababy · 05/05/2004 08:02

Mmmm, the more I know about this darn vax!!! Well, I guess we will have to see if the GP says anything about it.

OP posts:
Jimjams · 05/05/2004 08:06

well its not just MMR- no vaccination is guaranteed to work. Although some are better than others. Studies looking at efficiacy of rubella vary wildly. Some suggest it works only 20% of the time (although I suspect something went wrong with that one- it's quite a old study) others more like 80+% (which is probably more likely).

Hulababy · 05/05/2004 08:09

Yeah I guess so. Just didn't get on with the MMR so a bug bear if it hasn't worked. irrational I know but...

Have the joy of going to our doctors now. have no appointment system - unless you are prepared to wait over a week. Instead it is a drop in from 9am onwards. Will get there early! Always interesting as it is a surgery right in the centre of a city - some interesing people visiting

Hula, according to my medical notes I had german measles 3-4 times as a child! Whether that was misdiagnosis or I never got immunity from it I don't know. I still had to have the vaccination at 14 or whatever age it was when we were kids (that did actually take - at least I have antibodies now!)

katzguk · 05/05/2004 09:26

how is she?

LIZS · 05/05/2004 09:42

Hula

Has she had Slapped cheek/Fifth Disease ? Is her face really red rather than spotty. It is easily picked up at nursery .

CountessDracula · 05/05/2004 09:44

Hula good luck at the doctors hope it's nothing.

Hulababy · 05/05/2004 09:44

Back from doctors. At the moment all doctor can say is that it is probably a non specific viral rash - i.e. it has no name! But rash on rash is now more obvious and spot like, not tiny rash. So ahve to keep an eye on that in case it develops and is german measles. So, no nursery until the rash has gone and to avoid newly pg woman.

Liz - it is more of a rash/spots than just red cheeks I think. I gather the doctor would have picked up on anything anyway wouldn't he?

OP posts:
LIZS · 05/05/2004 09:50

It was a raised rash as far as I remember but had an underlying redness to it. Don't remember it as being particularly spotty though but it was 5 years ago.
