Baby has really bad nappy rash - it's bleeding

DD2 (10 months) has had sudden onset of very severe nappy rash. It came two nights ago in the space of an afternoon and was bleeding by evening. It's still the same two days on. Bleeding comes and goes but there are definite blister type sores.

It's very red and raw but in a very small area - localised approx 2 cms from her anus.

have been giving her nappy off time but no effect.

Am probably going to try and get her to see a GP tomorrow unless anyone has any miracle options. I've tried Sudocrem - no effect. On Metanuium tonight so will see if that helps.

Poor little mite - it must hurt so much.

Any advice?

Metanium always worked for us. There is a steroid cream that your gp can give you that is very good- sorry don't remember its name. You have my sympathies its a nasty thing for your lo to have. My dd suffered horribly with it.

waterfalls · 08/11/2006 22:27

She could have a urine infection causing this, so deffo a trip to the gp is needed, in the meantime I would keep her nappy off as much as possible, sod the puddles of wee on the floor, regular soaks in the bath in just water.

mawbroon · 08/11/2006 22:27

I read an ancient thread on here where someone put cornflour on weeping nappy rash. I did it with my ds and it was much better in a few hours and almost gone after 24. It's worth a try at this time of night (assuming you have some in the house) if you can't get a hold of any other creams which people might recommend.
Hope your dd isn't too distressed by it and I would still go to see the doctor as it could be infected.

Pennies · 08/11/2006 22:30

waterfalls - would low temp also indicate a UTI? She had one a few days ago which I put down to teething (which I also attributed to this nappy rash as wellat first but it's so severe now I'm wondering).

I like the cornflour option very much, though isn't this just a drying out technique?

Definitely get to the doc for something strong to help it clear up. But until then i'd advise don't use water or wipes on it. Clean with baby lotion on cotton wool if you have some as its much more soothing for poor sore bottoms.

3littlefrogs · 08/11/2006 22:34

How low is the temp? low temp. can be an indication of infection/illness in babies that needs medical assessment and intervention. Is she showing any other signs of illness?

mawbroon · 08/11/2006 22:34

Yes, I think so Pennies, but the skin will heal faster if it is dry. Cornflour doesn't have anything else in like unlike some talcs which could irritate it further.

colditz · 08/11/2006 22:34

I would advise against baby lotion as it stings like bloody hell. I would go back to using cotton wool and water, pat dry then coat wityh Metanium, which is very good.

Metanium should do the trick (unless it's a definite case for the GP). You should see a marked difference in the morning (if applied tonight - most large supermarkets will stock it if you have a 24 hour one nearby) and hopefully it will be much better in a few days. Sudocrem never helped dd who has very sensitive skin and even now (she's 6) we need to use metanium on her from time to time when she's been to the loo at school and not quite managed to clean herself properly. It only takes a few hours for her to become sore. Applied after a bath metanium works wonders.

Mirage · 08/11/2006 22:35

dd2 suffered from bleeding nappy rash. The only thing that worked was chamomile tea.We washed her with it every nappy change & it was gone within 48 hours. It is fantastic stuff.

3littlefrogs · 08/11/2006 22:35

Is there a defined area of inflammation around the blisters? I am just concerned about infection.

mawbroon · 08/11/2006 22:35

Sorry, my post is meant to say that cornflour doesn't have anything else in it like perfumes unlike some talcs. REally must go to bed!

Pennies · 08/11/2006 22:37

Temp was 98.9 (sorry ye olde fashioned readinges here, yea verily). Baby very happy until she poos then it all goes pete tong. LOVES her bath, but can't blame her can you?

Hello Mirage, I have put a card up ion Morrisons! I don't know how much to charge though.

Pennies · 08/11/2006 22:39

Aero - she's caked in Metanium tonight as had some already as bought it once for DD1 (though it never had any effect on hers).

3littlefrogs - the area is bright red with small spelckes of rawness within the red which occasionally bleed.

Aero · 08/11/2006 22:40

ps - do check for UTI - Dd has also suffered these. When she had her first one at 18mths old she felt cold to the touch, but when her temp was actually taken it was sky high. She'd been slightly off colour for two weeks before the infection really took hold though and we ended up in hospital with her when a UTI was diagnosed. (And I had actually taken her to the GP in the first place and they told me not to worry etc)

3littlefrogs · 08/11/2006 22:40

Old fashioned normal reading is about 98.4 - 98.6, so not really worrying. Leaving the nappy off as much as possible is the best thing, but it is difficult at night I know.

3littlefrogs · 08/11/2006 22:42

Could be infected with thrush - GP can prescribe appropriate cream. Does she have a sore mouth?

Aero · 08/11/2006 22:42

Make sure you can see her skin through the metanium as I'm pretty sure it should be applied thinly.

Poor wee thing - I hope it clears up quickly for her.

I like the cornflour idea too - never heard of that before.

Pennies · 08/11/2006 22:44

Aero - blimey sounds a nighmare. Will take her to GP tomorrow and get it looked at.

OP posts:
Aero · 08/11/2006 22:46

It was at the time and she's had two more since just last year, but she's fine now and no lasting effects thankfully!

If she's generally happy, then it's probably nothing more than nappy rash, but peace of mind is a good thing. Keep us posted.

Pennies · 08/11/2006 22:51

3littlefrogs - was wondering re thrush and have some Timodene cream which I think is an anti-fungal. Will try it tomorrow if can't get to see GP and if Metanium doesn't work.

Aero - might have overloaded her a bit - def couldn't see any skin. Ooopps.

OP posts:
mawbroon · 10/11/2006 10:39

Has there been any improvement Pennies?

Pennies · 10/11/2006 12:10

I took her to GP and got some anti fungal cream so we're starting with that today and seeing how it goes. Thank you very much for asking .

OP posts:
frumpygrumpy · 10/11/2006 12:37

Pennies, Metanium is very very good if you get it right. It must be very thinly applied. It will stick to the broken skin and protect while allowing the skin to breathe and heal.

Put a tiny bit on your finger, dot it all over the area and then pat to spread. It should look like you have dusted the bottom in talc or chalk.

Hope she's better soon.
