Anyones ds had a circumcision for medical reasons?

Ds has a problem with his foreskin and the end of his willy is pretty sore a lot of the time. The consultant we saw today thinks it would be a good move to have a circumcision. Wondered if anyone had any experience of this that they could tell me about?

2 of my ds's have, but because v. tight foreskin & repeat infections. ds1s was a partial circumcision, but healed quite badly. ds2's was with different doc. I put it off because of bad experience with ds1. Agreed with doc. also partial, inasmuch as he'd take away the least amount necessary, but because he'd had so many infections, the skin underneath was badly scarred so he ended up with a full circumcision. His however healed really well and hasn't had any bother with it since.

Both times the op itself was very quick ((30 mins?) but was under GA. Both times they had to have walked around, eaten something, drank and done a wee before they were allowed home.

I would say if his willy is sore a lot, then you should probably get it done sooner rather than later, if he's around 5 - how old is he? With ds2 he was 5 but tbh I wish i hadn't put it off so long.

If I can help with anything else just let me know

Thankyou for your responses - I was beginning to fear we were the only ones!

Ds is 3. They haven't mentioned how much of the foreskin they will remove but I was assuming a total one. It is very tight and gets very red often. They also didn't mention whether they would do it under local or general. Not sure which is worse - putting poor ds's body through a GA or making him be awake and potentially aware of what they are doing and upset.
They are pushing this through as priority becasue he is due to start school in September next year and we are having a baby in February and his ability to potty train has been seriously compromised by having a sore willy a lot of the time.
I have full confidence in the consultant -I hope it's him that does it but realistically, it might be one of his SHOs. We'll see.

Ernest - can I ask how the GA affected your dss? Did it really hurt them when they weed afterwards? How bad are the scars? TBH I've never seen a circumcised penis so don't really know what it will be like.

DS1 now 14 had this done at 3 for the same reason. No probs, just an in and out day surgery thing.. altho it was normal practice then to stitch the dressing to the wound which meant it smelt terrible by the time it dropped off... bleuurggh.. I can remember it vividly!

11 years later he seems perfectly happy with his willy in a 14-year-old-boy kind of way!

cadbury · 09/11/2006 09:21

Eeeeeew, shiney! I can imagine!

Did he have the general or the local anaethetic(sp?) ?

A general. Ooh and he pooed himself as he was coming round - just remembered! (He would throttle me for posting this! )

Cadbury, my 5 year old ds is in the same position and will probably need a medical cicumcision.
My now 8 year old had a hypospadias repair (genital birth defect) at age one and his willy now looks similar to a circumcised one.

I'm not looking forward to 5 year old having op but feel it is the right thing to do. I am expecting him to have a sore willy for at least a week and prepared for lots of pampering.

I think all childen have GA for med circumcision.

My one year old was still in nappies and we bought a larger size to allow air to circulate and went with out nappy as often as possible.

Stayed in for a week Jellyhead? ! They kicked us out the same day even though DS has CF and had thrown up after the anesthetic!!

Oh right.. sorry

cadbury · 09/11/2006 10:21

Thanks guys, thats really helpful. So the GA didn't have any ohter side effects you can remember (apart from the pooh - I shant tell him you told me SJ)? My body took ages to recover from one when I had it - or maybe that was the major surgery I can't be sure.

Well as I said , he did throw up Cadders.. but then my DS used to vomit for England with little or no excuse..!

The GA is very quick and light.. DS was in and out in twenty minutes. Recovery from the GA should be v. straightforward.

notagrannyyet · 09/11/2006 10:24

One of my DS had this done for medical reasons.
He was 20 months at the time which I now know is quiet young .Doctors normally like to leave it until boys are older.
The worst part for me was leaving him screaming at the operating theatre door!
DS had no problems with the op and of course no memory of it. His willy did look horrible at first. We were on a day ward DS was the youngest the rest of the boys were aged between 3 and 11.
The older ones were very upset when they had come round enough to look 'down below'. All of them cried. From their reaction and that of their mothers they had been given no warning of what it would look like!
My DS was still in nappies but had to run around without one for the first week or so. We had a district nurse come for the fist few days but this was 20 years ago...probably doesn't happen now.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 09/11/2006 10:25

(and I think he would be more horrified about me discussed his willy on the WWW than the poo, upon reflection.. )

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 09/11/2006 10:27

I think the younget the better! The older they are the more protective they are of their willies.. they learn this very young!

Can't remember how old DS is Cadders.. even though I met him in Wetherspoons.. (ead like sieve..).. but my DS was still in nappies at night at 3, and after the op we were told not to put him back in nappies.. and he was dry at night within days.

Oh how horrible Notagrannyyet. That must have been really upsetting for all concerned!
I am worried about leaving ds to go off into a strange place without me but I supose most mums would be.

DS1 had one for medical reasons at 8yo. We had it done privately (part of DH's work BUPA cover) so I can't comment on NHS way of doing things.

He was only in for a couple of days and was pretty sore the day after the op. When the bandages came off it looked like a dog had chewed it . But he recovered very quickly and is fine now (at 14.5)

missymoosal · 09/11/2006 10:33

My son had a similar problem unable to pull back foreskin, repeated skin infections and we were offered a circumcision.
I wasn't keen as I feel it is a mutilation so we found a compromise and he had a frenuloplasty instead.
This is where the 'webbed' area on the head of the penis is loosened under a G.A so that the foreskin can be properly retracted when having a bath etc. He had it as a day case, was a bit sore for a few days, had some salt baths, and has been problem free ever since.

He is 3 and a quarter - not even close to being dry at night but I would like him to be. We had to abandon the potty training for a while until we knew what was going on with this situation becasue he was leaking all over the place and not able to feel it and my stress levels were through the rooff. We need to get him out of pull ups now and will effectively start again with the training but the night one . . . . . that could be trickier
