Dd2 has been off school ttday with a temp and a sore throat etc, that is not going down with calpol and ibuprofen. She feels really hot, but says she is freezing, and is shivering. I can't remember if I should strip her off or keep her covered. Help!

But if they're shaking and shivrering Stace, and this has gone on for at least 24 hours .. I'd get somewhere

carla · 01/05/2004 17:53

hercules, of course you're right. Call them out lou- this has gone on for too long, you poor things.

lou33 · 01/05/2004 17:54

There is noone, no. Ds2 is also really difficult to leave with anyone .

Any news Lou?

Lisa78 · 01/05/2004 17:55

sorry, meant, any news? What did nhs direct say?

lou33 · 01/05/2004 18:05

Am on hold because all operators are busy

Her head hurts too, and she is saying it hurts to breathe

OP posts:
stace · 01/05/2004 18:08

how far from hospital are you? and what about neighbours can you ask them to sit the other kids or would you need to take them with you?

lou33 · 01/05/2004 18:08

I know they can cope with higher temps, as dd1 had one of 40.8 a few months ago,but she wasn't is as much as a state as dd2 is. I am usually unflappable, but am starting ot get concerne, esp as dh won't be back until 9 ish.

If you call the NHS Direct, the doctor from the emergency clinic will call you, I'm sorry to say that they won't come out for any reason whatsoever, I once had a really ill baby and a vomiting 5 year old and no transport but they refused, they did however say that they would send someone to pick me up but couldn't say whether it would be in a hour or 4 hours and also I might have a long wait before being brought home.

I hope you won't be in this situation as it is distressing, but just wanted you to be aware of what might happen.

Hope your dd2 feels better really soon.

lou33 · 01/05/2004 18:09

Would have to take the youngest with me, who is disabled, as he has massive issues about being with other people. Neighbours we don't really know. The only one I could call is at work

OP posts:
lou33 · 01/05/2004 18:11

Rae I seem to recall eading a leflet somewhere that said having transport/childcare issues was not enough to warrent a home visit, but I can't remember if it was where I used to live, or here.

stace · 01/05/2004 18:14

how long would it take to for someone to get to you? family or friends or would it be better to take them all with you? Any answer from nhs direct yet? when was the last lot of calpol or nurofen?

Lisa78 · 01/05/2004 18:14

but one with SN Lou? Wouldn't that qualify?

Anyway, if you have no one to leave them with, you have no one to leave them with so thats that. So, you have three options after waiting to see what nhs direct say, anyway

One, call a doctor out if they will come
Two, call an ambulance (am not kidding, if she is having breathing difficulties, that might merit an ambulance)
Three, wait and see till DH gets home

what is your gut instinct telling you?

Please let us know how she goes on, I am getting worried about you as well as her now. Are you getting plenty of water down her or is her throat too sore to drink?

Lisa78 · 01/05/2004 18:16

Taxi to local A and E Lou? Or don't you have the car seats? By the time you are seen, your DH will be okay to pick you up

carla · 01/05/2004 18:17

lou, what's happening?

Lisa78 · 01/05/2004 18:29

Lou?

lou33 · 01/05/2004 18:33

Am simultaneously cooking, typing and speaking to nhs direct. They have said there is up to four hours wait for a call back, so I am going to call the out of hours surgery number and see if they are any quicker.

Dd2 is getting drink down her, but it really hurts. I won't call an ambulance yet, as she isn't that bad atm, but will obviously reconsider that if she goes further downhill.

I don't have any car seats here, and tbh it would be a nightmare trying to drag ds2 along in his sn chair, trying to set it up while holding him is virtually impossible, and he cant stand.

hercules · 01/05/2004 18:35

I dont mean an ambulance. Doctors visit if you cant get to them. House calls.

hercules · 01/05/2004 18:36

Sorry , didnt read last few messages.

Lisa78 · 01/05/2004 18:48

I presume you can't get hold of DH to come home?
Aren't there any mners near you?

lou33 · 01/05/2004 18:59

He's on his way Lisa, but it will take 2 - 2 1/2 hours. Ds2 won't be left with anyone he doesn't know REALLY well, it's one of the things his paed is watching in regards to possible aspergers/asd. Am now holding for the out of hours service.

OP posts:
lou33 · 01/05/2004 19:01

Doc is going to call me they said.

OP posts:
Lisa78 · 01/05/2004 19:01

Okay Lou, let us know how you get on. I know its really worrying and frightening, but stay calm, try not to panic love - remember children run really high temperatures and have all sorts of scary symptoms for the most minor of infections; I'm sure she will be absolutely fine.

lou33 · 01/05/2004 19:03

I'm not panicking, just concerned. Been through lots worse, but she is looking rough too, so I don't think , by looking at her, she will be able to wiat until Tuesday when the doctor opens again.

OP posts:
Lisa78 · 01/05/2004 19:32

sorry lou, didn't mean to sound patronising
