Hello. It's found out vit d 30. Is that low. Going to pick iron result up later

PeterSpots · 19/06/2015 09:05

I'll see what's on the printout but it doesn't seem that low. Was hoping it would help me find out what's wrong

From what I understand, anything below 25, and you are losing calcium from your bones which is the classic sign of deficiency (sort of adult rickets).

For your body to function properly you need to be over 40

It is better to be well over that (especially before the winter gloom sets in).

Just read that 30 nmol/L is equal to 12 mg/ml so not sure what my number is?

Bettertobehealthy · 21/06/2015 12:05

Peterspots. - If that is a UK measurement , from a UK lab, then it will be in nanomoles per litre (nmol/L ). The other units of ng/ml is American and would not be reported in those units from a UK lab. You are right 30nmol/L is equal to 12ng/ml.

A reading of 30 nmol/L is very low. Especially since we are in Mid June , and you would have been expected to have raised your level from sunlight, by at least some, from the end of winter. You can actually start making vitamin D in your skin from mid April. So in the depths of winter , you were very possibly below that reading of 30.

Your treatment of 3000 IU should ( if your response is an average response) , raise your level to about 100 + , after about 3 months of taking it.

Some doctors will give a loading dose to "kick start" the recovery of your level. i.e. 20,000 every couple of days for a few weeks. Those patients will reach a higher level more quickly. Your doctor has chosen not to do that with you. After about 3 months however you should have reached a pretty acceptable level. Many Vitamin D researchers believe that 100 - 150 is the blood level to aim at. ( This is not the consensus medical profession view, but it is the view of many many Vitamin D researchers and others. )

Those researchers would look at your level of 30 and call that very low, a deficient state, it could be worse admittedly , but it should be a heck of a lot better.

There is a distinct possibility that low vitamin D is causing some or all of your problems. It makes a great deal of sense for you to get your D level up. I would also suggest you get a bit of sunshine on your skin. Not only will it help with vitamin D levels , it will produce other beneficial effects such as anti-depressive endorphins, etc. Do not burn, that is not helpful. A few minutes , (without sunscreen), when the sunlight contains UVB , i.e. between 10 and 3 pm. in the summer will help you build up your D levels as well.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Have a look at some of my other postings, on other threads, I have tried to give a fuller picture of Vit D and its effect on the human body. etc etc.

Thank you. It has really helped to have it explained. My body and anxiety levels are in meltdown. Waiting to see if it's the peri menopause & HRT is an option. I will continue with the Vit D. I am very stressed about what is happening to my body & I know that doesn't help. The constant twitching in my face is driving me crazy. The pelvic pain I have not had for 15 years and the buttock pain that I have not had for 10 years and now my legs is sending me into a tailspin of depression.

PeterSpots · 21/06/2015 13:36

I am also so exhausted.

DayLillie · 22/06/2015 10:11

Peterspots - my levels were higher than yours - 39 - but I have felt a lot of benefit from taking D3 - I just feel generally happier Smile I was getting bad pains in my neck and shoulders and hips and these have reduced to normal levels.

I am taking it through the summer - although I try and get outside, the sun/weather has been intermittent since April. I sit out with a cup of tea for 20 minutes when I can - I may be developing a bit of a tan! (unusual for me - pale and freckley)

PeterSpots · 23/06/2015 16:36

ThAnk you for letting me know. Don't know what's going on with my body. Seeing gynaecologist tomorrow about the pain behind my public bone. It's so low & does feel like something I had years ago. It's wearing me down

Micha1972 · 24/02/2021 13:32

I'm 7 weeks in on supplements. Original level of 25mnol, now raised to 120mnol. However, I still have all the horrible symptoms, especially pain in neck and back. I just want to gauge how long it took for people to a) notice a significant improvement in pain and mood and b) to feel back to normal? Thanks so much.
