Face tingling/pressure

I've had facial tingling for 3 months after an extreme period of stress where I cried every day for 2 months. Then I had facial tingling across cheeks and by lip and over eyebrow. Mainly left side. I am not breathing properly and I am so stressed over this symptom. Saw a neurologist & had a brain MRI he said brain ok & trigemeral nerve not compressed. He said maybe a virus. Went to dentist who said that my Masseter muscles (cheek) were too tense (teeth clenching) at night. Feeling so stressed over my spasm face when I yawn my face twitches. Any ideas or other peoples experiences? Thank you

You must be at your wits end. Are you considering going back to the doctors? I know you have been thowing money at alternative solutions and must be getting fed up that you havent found the solution yet but you could try phoning the homeopathic helpline,it's a premium rate phone call but generally works out cheaper than a consultation and they are very good.

PeterSpots · 12/04/2015 17:51

I've got an appointment with the neurologist in 3 weeks & I have been asked to be referred to a maxo oral consultant. I'm just worried my last lot of oesteopathy has set me off with a headache but I'm just clutching at straws. Or if releasing the muscle in my jaw/cheek has caused me to feel a headache where I'm clenching at night. I know I've just got to get on with it but the headache seems to have tipped me over the edge :(

I am glad you are seeing someone but three weeks of headaches seems a long time, if you don't get any relief in the next day or so, I think I would go back to the GP.

TheOldWiseOne · 13/04/2015 10:44

This sounds similar to what I had and to what someone else on here has mentioned - non headache migraine which can give you the tingling on your face or tips of fingers. You have had an MRI and seen the neurologist so accept what they say. I know that these feelings can be scary . I believe they can be related to hormonal fluctuations.

PeterSpots · 13/04/2015 15:36

Hello I have has the tingling constantly since it started mid January & I've had the headache for a week & half. I know it is positive that the MRI was clear but I still have the problem but I think it is being caused from clenching and irritating the cheek/jaw/temporal muscle. The twitching happens when I yawn or squint my eyes. All mainly on the left. I'm thinking of getting a small thing from the dentist that sits on your front teeth & stops clenching when you sleep. If it was silent migraine would it be constant?

OP posts:
PeterSpots · 15/04/2015 17:01

I know I'm clutching at straws. It's been constant. Anyone had this brought on by stress. I really just want it to go. I didnt go to the hypnotist as it was quite expensive. I'm visiting the dentist to ask about a mouth guard to see if it makes a difference

OP posts:
PeterSpots · 27/04/2015 17:23

Didn't do the hypnotist in the end. I have picked a mouth guard up & last week I had a myofasial massage but I'm at bit despondent as my face is feeling sore. So tired of it all. Jcee how long did it take for yours to get better & what worked? Really finding it hard

OP posts:
PeterSpots · 29/04/2015 18:56

Is there anyone who has experienced this. I had a massage last week & now my face is burning. I just want someone to talk to. I'm so fed up

I have posted on here previously about my issues with this.

I first had issues of face tingling which appeared to be cycle related (falling oestrogen) because I had suffered from migraine aura in the past, and I was sometimes getting a headache with it, the neurologist put it down to that. Then I suffered a devastating personal loss and the symptoms became more as you describe, virtually constant. I also got tingling all over my body and a feeling as if I had ants crawling on me. I noticed that it got worse when I had bad news at the hospital, so I asked if it could be stress related. The GP said it could be but that she had never really come across it before. I had to undergo an op (unrelated) and it was clear that the anesthetist did not believe the diagnosis and it was clear MS was suspected. I had a clear MRI, but it did not really help because the symptoms were so alarming. Gradually it got better (probably a period of 3 months).

I had no more symptoms (apart from cycle related during perimenopause) for 10 - 15 years. Then suddenly it came on again. This time, a different GP felt that I was anxious and overbreathing, my pulse was fast, causing the tingling. He said the crawling skin was very common. He said I was also displaying thyroid symptoms, so eliminated that cause. I also had headaches for perhaps a month or so, but all the symptoms came on daily and were not present all the time. Now the tingling has gone but I have been referred to the maxillo facial department as I have had a sore face and jaw and limited opening. Apparently due to 'clenching'. I have been on a soft food diet (lots of Ben and Jerry's) and I now feel back to normal. There is light at the end of the tunnel, be persistent, ask for tests and try and relax!

OttiliaVonBCup · 30/04/2015 10:05

I have this.
The tingling and the teeth clenching and the lot.

I didn't realise they were related. I might have to talk to my GP.
I had beta blockers for anxiety and I also take magnesium supplements. Not sure anything helps though.

PeterSpots · 30/04/2015 17:53

Thank you both for replying. It makes me feel better that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Just need to relax. I have an appointment with a maxo facial person on May 11th. Trying a mouth guard & hope it may ease the face muscle.

I suppose I just want to know people have experience. Could it be clenching? My face tingles or feels pressure & I am now so stressed over it

OP posts:
PeterSpots · 01/05/2015 08:30

I wondered if mine was stress but the face symptoms are really unpleasant. Pressure & tingling. I've stopped all exercise because I'm scared of making it worse. I just wish someone would tell me what it is. Through the neurologist said it could be a virus attacked the nerve in the brain but there is no evidence just how I am feeling. Or could be clenching or stress. How do you cope when you are scared and feel like this

I'm off to see a maxilliofacial consultant on monday but I feel defeated by it all. The pressure in my face & tingling is driving me mad & looking at the Internet is dismal. I was hoping the mouth guard would be a miracle cure but I've only been on it a week. So fed up.

OP posts:
PeterSpots · 12/05/2015 22:59

Went to the maxilliofacial consultant. He said that my face has something similar to cramp from the muscles by my jaw. I was pleased that he found something as I was beginning to think I was a fruit loop. The spasm in my face is causing the pressure & twitching. I have to see a facial consultant & facial physio. Just hoping it will be start of this starting to go.

It is thought that low magnesium can cause involuntary muscle twitch.
Also one of the symptoms of low calcium, is tingling round the mouth.
Just an idea, ! I presume you have had your blood levels tested for various deficiencies. Stress can cause various deficiencies.

BTBH

PeterSpots · 13/05/2015 18:51

No I haven't had any deficiencies checked but since getting stressed waiting For an hour for my appointment I've now got tingling fingers. I know I shouldn't let it get to me but I am so anxious and stressed over it :( I am trying to remain calm but I just cant understand why my fingers are tingling

OP posts:
Bettertobehealthy · 15/05/2015 19:13

Low vitamin B12 could cause neurological symptoms as well. Are you veggie/vegan ? as that could possibly cause B12 deficiency.

If I was you, I'd ask my doctor for some tests like that. It can't hurt and it might show something up. I would have thought it worthwhile to get:
calcium, vitamin D, B12 at least. Good luck.

PeterSpots · 18/05/2015 17:28

Thank you. I will ask. I was told by a oesteopath to massage a bit in my mouth so stupidly I decided to do that & it hasn't helped now I'm worried what I've done. I'm so desperate to stop the symptoms. I see the face physiotherapist a week on Wednesday. I just hope it helps. It's really making me miserable. I just hope it is TMd and she can do something or even start me in the right direction. Thank you so much for replying. I hold it all in at home/work because of i told people how I really feel I would cry & not stop x

I don't think I can take anymore

OP posts:
justanotherquestion · 18/05/2015 21:07

Yes you can. I have been there, thought it would never end, or that I had some nasty disease, but I am fine now (although still seeing the maxillo facial consultant).

I still have a little pain and cannot open my mouth fully, cannot eat a baguette or steak or anything without a lot of pain, but if I steer clear of serious chewing I am fine. Two months ago, I dreaded cleaning my teeth due to the pain. Like you, the consultant said it was 'a muscle in spasm', it really seemed hard to believe. However, I realised that steam made it a lot better, so it made sense. They often prescribe an SSRI, which relaxes the muscles and I took one for 6 months. Sometimes I thought they had just prescribed a placebo, as it seemed to have no effect for several months. I also took a beta blocker, as at the time my GP thought I had Thyroid problems too and he thought it would lessen the symptoms until the blood tests were back. 5 months on, the constant pain, headaches and numbness seem like a distant memory.

You have had an mri and that would pick up most of the nasties. You have a diagnosis and it is certainly treatable. Whilst waiting for my hospital appointment, having been diagnosed by my dentist, I ordered a book on TMJ disorders. You may find something similar comforting to read if you are sceptical about the diagnosis. In fact, my consultant offered me some reading material too.

Have faith that you are now seeing people that can help.

PeterSpots · 19/05/2015 16:51

Hello. Thank you so much for replying. I feel very alone. I'm not as I have family, friends but when you are dealing with something you have to put a front on for people it is very lonely. The tingling in my face is driving me to distraction. When I yawn my face twitches. I would take an SSRI if it would help. It is helped by a hot water bottle. I do wonder if it I have chronic hyperventilation & I've stressed myself out so much.

I really do appreciate your posts as it makes me feel there is hope. Thank you x

Hello. Something awful has happened & I am not coping. 10 years ago I broke my coccyx and it took 2 years to recover. I saw a massage person three weeks ago to help with my face pain. Said please do not go near my coccyx. Though I let her move my legs. Now my coccyx pain has come back & I can't cope with the face & coccyx pain. It's only been a week but I feel living a nightmare. I've finally got my appointment with the face physio & this has happened & I really, really can't cope. I can't sleep. I'm thinking about going to my doctors to ask for anti depressants but I feel a failure & so so stupid for visiting the massage person.

Buttercupsandaisies · 22/05/2015 07:26

It sounds like TMJ. I went dentist this week as constant jaw and face pain, ear blockage, clicking etc on one side, he also said my messeter muscle is too tight and said its classic sign of grinding at night and so is making me a night guard. Do you have one? May be a good idea to start with.

PeterSpots · 22/05/2015 08:08

Thank you. I Hope the mouthguard settles your face pain. Mine has been driving me mad & I am now so stressed out making it worse because my coccyx has started to hurt again after 8 years after having a massage. So sos stupid that I out myself in that position. I have an appointment with a face Physio on Wednesday so I hope they confirm what the consultant said. I I kniw I need to buck up but the coccyx thing has tipped me over the edge because it almost broke me last time. So so stupid
