he's two and he's never had a temperature over 39.5 before. He is acting like he is under the weather but is fairly alert and talking. I have asked the doc to call me and dh has gone out to get some calpol. Should i be worried? He is just terribly hot. Had a temp last night but it is going up, not down. Bit worried about it going higher. Any advice?

No advice, but ill ive you a bump.

Furball · 31/10/2006 16:57

sponging him down in a tepid (not to hot or cold) bath and plenty of fluid (pref. water) If your ds has no other problems like say asthma he can also take Ibrupofen/neurofen as well as the calpol which will also help.

sugarfree · 31/10/2006 16:58

Have you got him stripped to his nappy?

ruty · 31/10/2006 17:01

have now sugarfree. he's eating sorbet. hope that is a good thing!

Sponging him with water with some vinegar in it works wonders if you manage to do it.

jammydodger · 31/10/2006 17:26

Take him outside with no clothes on (except nappy), whatever the weather and time of day or night. This was recommended to us by our GP after our ds had a convulsion following a very high temp of over 40 degrees. Also Calpol and Nurofen together (that's what they did in hospital after his convulsion), and open the window.
But going outside is quick and very effective. HTH

ruty · 31/10/2006 18:15

oh gosh that's what i'm scared of jammydodger. He has a top off, watching Cbeebies and the window is open. can't get him near water or the bath [or vinegar!] will maybe try to take him out if temp persists.

Ruty, just make sure he has Calpol and can have Nurofen too at the same time. Very important that you get this temp down, even if he doesn't feel like it. Good luck.

ruty · 31/10/2006 19:51

it is now 39.2. Hoping it won't go up sharply in night.

My ds had many high temperatures as a baby and I was always told to ensure I cool his head first. Poor child sat many an evening with a (knotted) flannel draped over his head.
Hope he's feeling better soon xx

sugarfree · 31/10/2006 19:56

If he settles and sleeps, set your alarm to keep him dosed up in the night.(and for your peace of mind)

ruty · 01/11/2006 10:57

thanks everyone. temp now 38.4 so hopefully going down slowly. thanks for all the tips. good point about keeping head cool first. He's brighter now so big fingers crossed he's on the mend.

ruty · 01/11/2006 11:12

damn. it's gone up to 39.8 again. He's never had a temp for more than a day before. This is the third day of high temperature today and no runny nose, no cough. Anyone else had anything like this? DH on verge of taking him to A&E.

danceswithmonkeys · 01/11/2006 18:46

I'd take him. Ds was exactly like that when he had pneumonia. No other symptoms except very high temp (he was fine by the way, one night of IV antibiotics and he was sooooooooo much better). At A&E they said you shouldn't sponge them down because then body reacts to being cooled suddenly by increasing temp but you hear different stuff from diff people. If you ring A&E and tell them his symptoms I am sure they will tell you to bring him him. Sorry, don't mean to scare you but better to be safe than sorry. Hope he is better soon.

if it was me and my ds had this sort of temp, i would ring a&e and see what they say. would def be getting ready to take him in.
probably just a virus but it's better to be safe... blah..blah.
ds1 had measles and was just dandy in every way except he was boiling his nappy off...

This may have been already suggested, but you can piggyback child ibuprofen with calpol (think it's called Brufen) - this is particularly good with ear infections, and can get the temperature down quicker, and because they're different medicines, you can use them together. Hope he's better soon.

Papillon · 01/11/2006 18:57

Hope the night is peaceful and he is much better in the morning Ruty

tortoiseshell · 01/11/2006 18:57

I spent an evening in A&E with ds2 recently, and there was a baby there with similar symptoms, and he turned out to have a urine infection, so it would be worth getting it checked out.

ruty · 01/11/2006 20:04

thanks again. it is still high. He is a bit floppy and upset but still talking and watching TV. But he is usually up and racing around, so it is a big change. I hate A&E so much, but am wondering about taking him in. It is just because the temp is persisting that worries me his body can't fight whatever it is off.

I would take him - DD had persistent high temp when she was 7 mths old, went to docs three times and was fobbed off, eventually went to a&e and it turned out to be meningitis. They will check him over and possibly just start him on antibiotics to start fighting whatever it is his body is fighting.
