he's two and he's never had a temperature over 39.5 before. He is acting like he is under the weather but is fairly alert and talking. I have asked the doc to call me and dh has gone out to get some calpol. Should i be worried? He is just terribly hot. Had a temp last night but it is going up, not down. Bit worried about it going higher. Any advice?

You can give calpol up to 4 times per day with at least a 4 hour window between each dose. You can give 15milligrams per kilogram of your child's weight at each dose.

In addition to the calpol you can give ibuprofen up to 3 times per day with at least 6 hours between does. You can give 5 milligrams per kilogram of your child's weight at each dose.

Try to give the calpol and ibubrofen regularly, ie DON'T wait for their temp to go up before you give it.

Encourage your child to drink plenty of cool liquids.

Please DO NOT take your child outside in only their nappy. This will cool down their extremities but will cause their core body temperature to go up, making them more likely to have a febrile convulsion.

If your lo has a persistent temp of 39 or higher, or if you are at all worried about them then take them to A+E. It is what the service is there for.

take him to a&e.
if you can't get his temperature down then you need to get him checked out.
please don't wait for it to get worse

my eldest has been ill over last few days with tonsillitis.temp over 39 degrees and got antibiotics.once it was below 39 i was told if it goes above 39 for over a couple of hours then go to a&e.

they only told me that because id already got him on ibuprofen, paracetamol and antibiotics and had been seen by a doctor already.if you arent sure what is wrong then make sure you take him

at that age i wouldnt risk it.id already have him there.do it for your own peace of mind.

my sons temp is finally down lower today but he's a grumpy git and crying & whinging and shouting at me every 5 mins.there's alot about and id seriously get him checked out

My DS had German Measles in August and although he was fairly well in himself his temp would as high as 40.1 as calpol wore off and this lasted for about 5 days. just kept him cool (not cold) when it rose and comfortable when it went down a bit. Loads of fluids too. Did take him to A & E though when rash appeared, just to be on safe side. Hope he's feeling better soon x

ruty - I've emailed you

Mum2FD, I don't know why vinegar works but it does. I vividly remember it from my childhood too and have successfully used it on my ds. Just soak a handkerchief or something in water with some vinegar in it and put it on the forehead.

It may just be an old wife's tale. Iin any case it will definitely not do any harm.

Ruty - I would take him to E&A.

thanks all. [and thanks Jimjams for kind email] He was so tired last night and i spoke to doc, and the calpol seemed to kick in eventually, and though he had a bad night his temp is down to 37.5 now and his feet are warm - so relieved, just hope it doesn't go up again later - if it does definitely off to docs. Quite surprised how fast it is going up and down - really hope this time it is on its way out.
