I'm sure i've read on here that there are about 4 suggested foods you can try if you have diarroeah (sp). I;ve tried doing a search but can't find anything.

Can anyone help. DD has a mild tummy upset.

BRAT

Banana

Rice

Apple

Toast

I think !

TwigTwoolett · 28/10/2006 16:08

I don't think there are any suggestions .. some people suggest avoiding dairy

RICE is if you sprain something .. rest ice compress elevation

TwigTwoolett · 28/10/2006 16:09

Bananas with an upset tummy? .. I don't think so

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 28/10/2006 16:09

Yes, Mercys right, its BRAT.

TwigTwoolett · 28/10/2006 16:10

OK have just contradicted myself hugely

Heathcliffscathy · 28/10/2006 16:10

it is BRAT.

mercy's list is the one.

TwigTwoolett · 28/10/2006 16:11

my acupuncturist says to limit banana intake as it increases the amount of mucous in the body

mucous and diarrhea??

doesn't sound sensible does it?

also you can have to much potassium from bananas

Mercy · 28/10/2006 16:11

Twiglett, I wasn't sure about the banana either tbh! I kept thinking it should be bread.

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 28/10/2006 16:15

I think banana tends to "bung" you up a bit (for want of a better expression!!).

When my 2 were weaning if I gave them banana too often it would constipate them.

I've got no medical evidence of this -just my theory

DelGhoul · 28/10/2006 16:15

crikey I didn't expect an answer that quick. thanks. Well, she's had banana today and some dairy. Was thinking of some scrambled egg on toast for tea, how about just toast and some rice pudding? She's 18mths and it's just seems to be smelly wind and one very soft pale nappy. sorry if tmi.

It is banana but the BRAT diet is no longer recommended for diarrhoea.

You need a bland intake with plenty of fluids.

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 28/10/2006 16:16

I meant to add, doesn't dairy increase mucus production? Seem to remember DPs acupuncturist saying something about this?

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 28/10/2006 16:18

oooh I'm getting confused now having read back over the thread

DelGhoul · 28/10/2006 16:19

is toast and rice pudding bland enough? THat's if she'll eat it skinny minny. SHe had a few mouthfuls of porridge this morning. Bleurgh! I knew she wasn't right last night as she normally wolfs down chicken & veg but most of it ended up on the floor.

Depends which doctors you listen to. Some say diary causes mucous, loads more say it doesn't. REALLY helpful.

Delghoul - egg, toast and rice pudding sounds fine. Try to limit her diary intake a little, replace with water wherever possible.

DelGhoul · 28/10/2006 16:20

she threw it btw, she wasn't sick

I have no medical training by the way, but the advice is from my ex-boss. A microbiologist and bloomin' expect in diarrhoea of all things (yuck)

DelGhoul · 28/10/2006 16:22

yucckk. Will go and try some, thanks

I didn't know that Samhain.

Delghoul, when ds has diarrhoea at 15 months I was told to dilute his formula milk to 1/2 strength for a couple of days. If your dd is breastfed, just carry on as normal obviously.

SamhainWitch · 28/10/2006 16:29

They previously suggested bananas because of their 'binding' quality but they are also high in potassium which can cause problems when the body is losing liquid. The concentrations become too high.

SamhainWitch · 28/10/2006 16:30

Which of course is what Twig said earlier but I have only just noticed

jodee · 28/10/2006 16:40

Delghoul, hope poor dd is feeling better soon, hun.

Must admit I'd never heard of BRAT for diar... oh I can't spell it. Am a bit surprised at apple?? DS eats lots of apples, I'm sure they make his bowels looser than if he didn't eat them (I stand to be corrected though!)

DelGhoul · 28/10/2006 16:59

Hi Jodee, how are you? Yes she's ok thanks, just a little bit whingy that's all and smelly . She's just had some toast and rice pudding and about to give her a biscuit, that should cheer her up.

Hi DG, all's well here thanks! A biscuit usually does the trick in this house.

Hope you are on the mend too.
