Go to hospital or not to go? nhs 24 isn't really helping

So last week I got diagnosed with hemiplegic mograines. Symptoms included:
Left body paralysis
Left head numbness/tingling
Blurry flickering eye sight
Severe headache
Sickness
Pain in left arm and leg

Everything all left side related tbh, I got out on Friday and given appointment for this Friday to get medication to try and prevent this happening again.

Problem is I don't know much about this type of migraine as it's rare. Not using Dr Google as mum said there's a few scary stories which will only stress me and in turn make me worse. Today at work my headache had became severe again (hadn't completely gone) and getting weird sensation in arm and leg again and blurry eyesight.

Phoned NHS24 and all the woman said was either wait it out or go back into hospital. Not definative answer.

I don't want to look stupid going back to hospital when I know what it is but also want it noted somewhere that my symptoms are back.

Dilemmas!!!! Sorry rant over.

Xxxxx

What do you want the hospital to do?

AhhhhABaby · 11/03/2015 22:23

Tbh I don't know, I wasnt told if I had to go back in if it happened again?
The last time I couldn't move out bed (paralysis is left side) and scared it will happen again. I'm home alone.

I don't know if they need to see me when it happens? I'm in the dark till I see neurology on Friday Sad xxxx

Ring the ward you were treated on.

AhhhhABaby · 11/03/2015 22:29

So do I just phone ward 207 and ask to speak to doctor ? Or is a nurse ok? Xxx

My sister gets these and gas been told to go and get seen every time - because the symptoms could be those of something much more serious (not that the migranes aren't serious)

If in doubt get checked out.

passthewineplz · 11/03/2015 22:35

Ring the ward and explain you were admitted last week and it's happened again, and you're worried as you're on your own.

It will probably be a nurse who answers and they'll be able to advise you further.

Hope you're ok

AhhhhABaby · 11/03/2015 22:37

Thanks sirzy, yeah I was in hospital Monday to Friday, I'm only twenty and for the first few days they were really concerned it was a stroke so I was terrified.

I don't want to wait doctors time but as yet I've not been told what to do when it happens (didn't expect it to happen as soon as this)

Xxxx

It doesn't sound nice, so best to ring for advice, but I'd prob just go and get checked out.

Have you got someone who can take you to hospital, or will you need to call a taxi? Flowers

Becles · 11/03/2015 22:43

Ring your local out of hours GP who can determine whether you need to be seen tonight or if it can wait until the morning.

AhhhhABaby · 11/03/2015 22:48

I will need to ask my mum to come collect me and take me but if she is working nightshift I will need to get in a taxi.

Think I'm just going to go and get check, better safe than sorry right?

OP posts:
passthewineplz · 11/03/2015 22:54

I'd say go get checked out or at least ring the ward for advice with it being so rare.

If it was a normal headache and you've not been in hospital I'd prob say ring nhs direct or what ever they're called.

Might be best to ring the ward or a&e first so you're not sat around for hours. x

LastNightADJSavedMyLife · 11/03/2015 22:55

Yes! Get it checked out

Becles · 11/03/2015 23:04

OP

Why are you not contacting the Out of HOURS GP service? They can triage and either arrange an appointment with a doctor tonight, arrange for an admission to hospital, fax a prescription to a 24hr pharmacy or give you reassurance that it can wait for your practice to open tomorrow.

PLEASE do not go to A&E unnecessarily when there are services that could get you in contact with a GP within the hour, saving casualty for immediate emergencies.

mariamin · 11/03/2015 23:08

I would ring the ward. No point sitting in A and E for hours, only to get sent home again.

AhhhhABaby · 11/03/2015 23:27

On way in, phoned ward and they want me to get checked out with it only being diagnosed last week.

She is contacting the out of hours GP, NHS 24 is the out of hours GP contact.

mariamin · 11/03/2015 23:39

Good luck OP

passthewineplz · 12/03/2015 00:23

Hope you're ok, and think you've done the right thing seeking help x

passthewineplz · 12/03/2015 12:19

How did you get on at hospital op? Hope you're ok Flowers

AhhhhABaby · 12/03/2015 17:20

So doctors have just been round to see me, I'm getting kept in today again as my symptoms are still really bad, said I would have gotten home but don't get any treatement till I have seen neurology tomorrow so I have to stay in.

For everyone that said not to go to a&e I was adviced never to not go as the symptoms are the same as a stroke. Especially not to leave it with not knowing my patterns or triggers yet.

Thank you for all the lovely comments Flowers xxxxxx

I have a rare headache type and when eventually diagnosed I searched the net and came across a forum. It was the best thing I ever did! Due to the headache being rare the doctors didn't know much about it and the forum had links to the world specialist on them and were able to help me get the correct treatments and offered a lot of support. I would research all you can and you never know you may be lucky and find a forum like mine. I just looked on it and they have info for other rare headaches on there too but I couldn't see yours as you've spelt it... Was it def spelt like that? If you pm me I'll send you the link as it may be helpful.

passthewineplz · 12/03/2015 17:39

Sorry you're still not felling well, hopefully you get some medication tomorrow which helps.

AhhhhABaby · 12/03/2015 17:57

Yeah definately spelt hemiplegic migraines. I've not took to the net yet as decided I would once I have seen neurology as Internet always seem to have the worst of everything.

I'll give you an email just now xxxx
