Just wondered if there had been any research into it, etc. Anyone in the know?

Erm....is that a 'no' then?
Just would like to know a bit more about it before ds has it.

If you do a search for threads on it, particularly threads including amyjade, you will find quite a lot of information about it. Her dd1 very sadly died of pneumoccocal meningitis aged 19 months.

tribpot · 22/10/2006 17:09

This one for example .

spooksRus · 22/10/2006 21:34

research..in what way?
I dont think they just bring out a vaccine without researching it!

lupo · 23/10/2006 17:24

Freenie, visit www.jabs.org.uk. Vaccine a
also known as prevenar, lots of kids in other countries have had adverse reactions to it

amyjade · 23/10/2006 19:00

Keep away from this website when researching Prevenar it is extremely one sided !!
99.99% of parents on here will advise you to take up this vaccine even those who are wary of all the other vaccines know the importance of Prevenar.
It's not just my daughter who died many others on here have children damaged by this disease
I suggest you read through the link tribpot has given you.

anniebear · 23/10/2006 19:28

Have it done

amyjade and myself would given anything for our Daughters to have been able to have had that vaccine...would have remortgaged to pay for it if we had to , if we had known what lay ahead

Fortuantly my little girl survived after being critically ill and on life support, but she has brain damage and other problems

Be thankful your child has the chance to have it

although I can understand your concern and wanting to look into it

do take no notice of any website against it though

chlochlo · 23/10/2006 20:53

Just read the website my ds 22months has got this tomorrow now i'm very nervous.

expatinscotland · 23/10/2006 20:56

i had to fight to get this for my 10 month old daughter, b/c they wanted to put her on the 'catch up schedule'.

this form of meningitis is not only quite deadly, but it leaves a relatively large percentage of its survivors with permanent disabilities.

it did appear to be more painful than her other jabs.

but how painful would it be to hold her down whilst she had a lumbar puncture?

no comparison, IMO.

nearlythree · 23/10/2006 20:56

I requested this for baby ds and he sailed through it. Just wish my other two were going to be called in.

Meningitis kills. Anything that can be done to stop it should be taken up.

expatinscotland · 23/10/2006 20:58

It doesn't just kill. I'm good friends w/a man who is completely blind and deaf in one ear from meningitis as a complication of measles in childhood.

He is in his 50s, so no vaccines, then.

But let's not forget, this can be a very debilitating disease.

chlochlo · 23/10/2006 21:01

I am definatly taking my ds to have this done as i would not be able to forgive myself if anything happened.
Maybe i should of stayed away from the website just nervous as ds has had bad reactions with other jabs and had to have mmr in hospital.

amyjade · 23/10/2006 21:10

It's your decision but the info on the jabs website is completely one sided and according to the meningitis research foundation most of the statistics on there are totally false !!
If you want to see the effects of this disease have a look at www.meningitis.org, my daughters story is under case studies.

anniebear i agree with you.
'Be thankful your child has the chance to have it'
If only freya had been given a chance

nearlythree · 23/10/2006 21:12

expat, my dd2 had a lumbar puncture (luckily not meningitis in the end). I'll never forget standing in the corridor for half an hour listening to her screaming. Give me 15 seconds in the GP's surgery any day.

We were lucky.

expatinscotland · 23/10/2006 21:12

I think of Freya often, Amy. Your sharing your story was not w/o effect.

So many parents had NO idea there even was a vaccine available for this.

nearlythree · 23/10/2006 21:13

amyjade Have often read of Freya and she and you are in my prayers.

chlochlo · 23/10/2006 21:14

I had already read your story and it was devestating I am so very sorry I feel so selfish worrying about a little thing like side effects

amyjade · 23/10/2006 21:39

chlochlo , Please don't apologise it's natural to be worried especially if your child has had side effects before.
Hope all goes well tomorrow

Feenie · 24/10/2006 07:45

Thank you everyone. Amyjade, I'm so sorry about your daughter. I feel that my question seems trivial now when the answer must seem obvious too you. Thanks for your help.

OP posts:
FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 24/10/2006 07:51

ack amyjade have posted this before but sole reason ds has had vaccine (had to go private ffs-he's 3) is cos of you sharing your story about freya. just to say thank you.

it is a nasty jab. into the muscle and both my kids off colour after (shows it working imo)

and totally worth it.

lanismum · 24/10/2006 10:16

just wanted to say that as someone who is wary of all jabs, especially mmr, i have booked my dd in for this jab on thursday as a direct result of amyjades story, my dd is 19 months now, and what amyjade and her family went through has stuck in my mind ever since i first read her posts and saw the picture of lovely little freya.

SoupDragon · 24/10/2006 11:03

BabyDragon had this and had no effects from it bar being slightly warm and mildly grouchy. A friend's DD was left profoundly deaf at 2 from this meningitis. Luckily for her it was "only" deafness and she is in mainstream school with a cochlear implant.

rydercup · 24/10/2006 11:41

Hi - my DS2 had this last week and was absolutely fine!! Just a question though. Why as part of the 'catch up' programme are they only having 1 dose of prevenar as opposed to the 3 they have if they have the injection from 2 months. Just wondered....is it a stronger dose they are giving at the 'catch up' or if not...does is still confer the same level of immunity? Sorry to be a bit of a spod.....but have been wondering this since last week and sadly the nurses seemed unable to answer????

chlochlo · 24/10/2006 21:06

Ds had his jab today he was so brave didn't even cry

Spongebob · 25/10/2006 15:57

I have recently read somewhere that the older the child, the less doses of prevenar are needed. This is not to do with different strengths of the vaccine but something to do with T-cell memory. A very young baby's immune system needs to be re-stimulated a few times before becomming immune ....whereas an older childs immune system will be better established to "memorise" the vaccine and therefore needs fewer doses....so I read.
