Hi everyone. I am very glum because I HATE the dentist and I think I need a crown as my lower back tooth has cracked and is now very sensitive when I eat.

There is no plaque, or decay, as I was only at the dentist a few weeks ago...will a crown hurt?
can I have general anaesthetic?

help!!!! reassurance needed.
I have never had a filling either, just a lot of extractions asI have a small jaw.
Thanks.

I had a root canal filling and crown and I couldn't feel a thing. A good dentist will tell you to raise your hand if you are in pain and he will stop and administer more local anaesthetic. If you're near Hemel Hempstead I'll give you details of mine if you like - he specialises in people with a phobia of dentistry

manchester
in a grotesquely expensive private surgery as there were no NHS ones anywhere near. I got sickof phoning round. God the money cost of it all makes me wince too.

Tell them you're pregnant? Move to Hemel Hempstead?! My dentist is so lovely and he's really handsome too - I'm always quite disappointed that I hardly ever have anything done.

Flowertop · 20/10/2006 23:27

Hi VoodooBanana I have had the lot and absolutely hate the dentist - but no pain! If you live near Milton Keynes will give you the details of a fab dentist who also deals with very nervous patients. I never used to go to the dentist as was too scared but now always go every 6 months. - good luck!.

Yeah, had a crown on a back tooth done a couple of months after I had DS (4 years ago). It wasn't too bad, honest, with a decent local anaesthetic! Dentist put in a temporary crown for a week while the permanent one was made.

It's a PITA that people can't get NHS dentists. We were lucky to get one nearly 10 years ago, which means I didn't have to pay for the crown as was covered by the pregnancy exemption . I've heard of people where I live keeping their NHS dentists by using their parents address when they move away, then getting the whole family checked up when they go back and visit the rellies!

my hv found us an nhs dentist.

HallgerdaLongcloak · 24/10/2006 08:19

fortyplus is right - going to the dentist no longer involves pain. A mouth overcrowded with instruments and enforced viewing of terrible telly, and being rather poorer afterwards - yes, pain - no. The last time I raised my hand at the dentist was over the fact the telly above my head was showing an operation and I really didn't want to see it. I've had two crowns (the first one had to be replaced after a mishap with a doorstep sandwich in an appropriately named pub) including one with a post, and a couple of root canal fillings.

I want to try and be sensible so I dont instill a fear of the dentist into dd too.

oh.my.god!!!

just got back from the dentist,,,,and I have been allocated a new one.................and he is a f.o.x..seriously, in an odd way I think I will be more concerned with looking nice than with any pain on the horizon...
how funny!!

by the way, he is about 6'1', built like a rugby player, dark messed up hair, Italian skin.......

Hello...I too am in your position. Have a throbbing tooth that I can see has a crack right down the length of it. I am a bit of a dentist scardey cat too...didn't go for 10 years and then bit the bullet and had all my fillings done in one go before I had to pay (I was stilll a student!) My mat exemption ran out 2 weeks ago....what a PITA!!!!! Apparently root canal is not as bad a speople make out, but that doesn't help you when YOU are the one in the chair...I hate it too and my dentist is NOT a fox!!

throckenholt · 31/10/2006 14:22

get to see the dentist asap - sounds like you have an abcess developing. They probably won't treat it until they have given you a course of antibiotics.

And in my experience toothache is much worse than childbirth

VoodooBanana · 31/10/2006 22:43
