Hi everyone. I am very glum because I HATE the dentist and I think I need a crown as my lower back tooth has cracked and is now very sensitive when I eat.

There is no plaque, or decay, as I was only at the dentist a few weeks ago...will a crown hurt?
can I have general anaesthetic?

help!!!! reassurance needed.
I have never had a filling either, just a lot of extractions asI have a small jaw.
Thanks.

Ok...hope it goes well. Mine not too bad today but still not right. Must get an appt booked but scared he will say that he might have to take it out!!!

VoodooBanana · 01/11/2006 12:37

well, button, you are not going to believe this, but he could find nothing wrong.

I had to bite down on wooden things, he froze his glove and pressed it all over, and poked at my gum with a pointy thing, but it didnt hurt??!!! I told him it gets worse through the day until really bad in the evening, but he siad it would be a crime to do anything like a filling/extract it, as he can see no problem, and definately no abcess as the tooth is still alive and you only get an abcess with a dead one.
He has given me sensitive toothpaste to rub/brush on it, and said dont come back unless
a) sudden sharp pain with hot or cold
b) pain that rises to a crescendo after a few minutes after eating
as both of those are signs of conditions within the pulp.
he reckons grinding my teeth at night with stress of having a baby, and pulling funny faces at her will also be making it hurt.
oddly, he even stuck his finger in my ear and wiggled it!!! Hope he changes his glove with the next patient...

Button, if yours isnt really bad, just get some sensodyne. As I am denplan, it was a free session today. Boy I am relieved.

However, it is still 'humming' gently, I can feel it.

ps. he said it wasnt cracked all the way through, but called it a name beginning with 'l' I forget what he said.

Oh Button, I am so relieved!!

A small crack can be very difficult to detect as it doesn't show up on an x-ray and isn't visible to the naked eye. But what happens is as you chew etc it flexs open and shut a miniscule bit, so by the end of the day it is quite tender. They usually reveal themselves when a piece of tooth comes away as the crack gets bigger.

VoodooBanana · 01/11/2006 12:45

comoveneer are you a dentist? Great name!
he made me bite on wood to try and flex it open, but according to him it didnt move. I swear sometimes it clicks about in my gum, tho,

Yes but if it is a tiny crack biting on wood won't show it up. (these cracks generally start of as microscopic fractures that widen over time).

VoodooBanana · 01/11/2006 12:57

it is a big visible crack, but he called it a term beginning with 'L'

I can see one in the other big back tooth on the other side too...

But if you have a big visible crack bacteria will be able to enter into the tooth causing decay. Can't therefore understand whyhe wold leave it untreated.

VoodooBanana · 01/11/2006 13:03

I had xrays and no signs of any decay/plaque, and after he fiddled it didnt hurt! he said just to go back if worse.

now the pain seems to be in my right ear/jaw so dont know.

Can i just ask, my tooth split in half a month ago, there were no appointments for 3 weeks i was told it was not an emergency as i was not in pain. Got to my appointment and dentist said u have left it too long the tooth is soft I will have to remove it!!!! I was and am still in shock. Does this mean that if I had been given an appointment when I 1st called I would still have my tooth???

ComeOVeneer · 02/11/2006 11:06

The tooth probably cracked because it was decayed (ie soft). Decay takes quiet a long time. 3 weeks isn't long enough for that kind of deterioration. If you had been seen on the day it cracked the prognosis would almost certainly have been the same.

VoodooBanana · 02/11/2006 16:04

by'soft' do you mean 'dead'? My dentist said mine is definatley still alive.

VoodooBanana · 03/11/2006 21:45

nevre been to York, but I have an odd idea that it is the place where Yorkies come from...the choc bars, not the naughty little dogs

OP posts:
worcestercaroline · 04/11/2006 19:39

thats right we have or i should say did have the 2 big choc factories. Think Terrys has closed down. Its a nice place. worth a trip.
