with me it was certain toothpastes and mouth washes. I don't get them with Zendium toothpaste.

belgo · 20/10/2006 07:42

Hand foot and mouth illness caused mouth ulcers in my dd.

nailpolish · 20/10/2006 07:44

a cold, poor dental hygiene, feeling run down, poor diet, pregnancy, there are loads of reasons

belgo · 20/10/2006 08:04

They can also be caused by biting the inside of your cheek or your tongue. Why do you ask?

lipsbite · 20/10/2006 08:06

cos ive got a two right the back of my tongue underneath

There is a virus going round (according to my Dr) - I had about 9, 4 under my tongue and the rest at the back of my mouth (none on my cheeks/gum)
They hurt try gargling with hot salt water or asprin (if you are allowed it)

harpsichordcarrion · 20/10/2006 08:14

lots of reasons.
stress can certainly make them worse, as can being run down.
some sort of trauma e.g. banging your mouth with a toothbrush.
you could also try a zinc/vit B1 supplement.
some toothpastes can cause them - you could try using a natural one and see if that helps

tubismybub · 20/10/2006 12:41

Coffee gives me them. Apparently eating pineapple is supposed to be good to help them heal.

katierocket · 20/10/2006 12:55

Mouth ulcers can also be an indication of a lack of Omega 3 and 6 in your diet (oily fish etc)

AnAngelWithin · 20/10/2006 12:56

lack of vitamin b2 i think.

MamaGhoul · 20/10/2006 12:57

I get them when I'm run down. My uncle recommends vit B12 (i think!!) but I keep forgetting to take them.

Dalesgirl · 20/10/2006 13:12

Mouth ulcers are a sign of a Zinc deficiency, also of B12 but mainly Zinc. Zinc is handy to take in the run up to the winter season when our bodies start to retreat and there is more chance of us becoming run down. I use Oraldene mouthwash when mine get really bad, it takes a couple of days to work but there is nothing like it. Rinse at bedtime, cut down on your salty stuff and your sugar also while you have your ulcers (if you can eat atall!) Don't waste money on Bonjela or Rinstead pastiles they taste foul and are of limited use.
Experience talking here!

My nephew is 13 months and is a bit poorly at the moment, he has a mouth full of ulcers but the doctor cant give any treatment to a baby.
Is there anything else he can eat that will help?
I saw pineapple mentioned.

harpsichordcarrion · 20/10/2006 15:57

sorry I meant B12
der

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 20/10/2006 16:08

My mum used to say they're caused by telling lies

MegaLegs · 20/10/2006 16:10

I always get mouth ulcers when I'm run down. They are agony and I end up with swollen glands in my neck too. I've just got over a bout.

southeastastra · 20/10/2006 16:11

i get them from eating boiled sweets or drinking wine! (alot of wine)

Lact8HisLiverWithANiceChianti · 20/10/2006 16:14

Telling fibs

Or at least that's what my mum always told me

weimaranerlover · 20/10/2006 18:14

Izzybiz, you could get a liquid form of zinc, Biocare Zinc Ascorbate, which is in very low dose per drop 0.8mg. I suggest to try 1 - 2 drops at a time up to 2-3 times a day for your nephew. It is important to watch this as if the mouth ulcers are appearing often, the underlying cause could be a candida overgrowth. If the zinc does not help add a probiotic for children from the health food shop. This will improve the flora of the digestive tract incl mouth.

me and my mother reckon theyre hereditary. mum gets em badly, i dont, my brother gets them badly, my sister and dad dont, my 12year old ds gets loads and eats the same as me

KBear · 20/10/2006 19:16

"Adcortyl in Orabase" from chemists coats them and enables you to eat a meal without crying! I get them all the time.

7up · 20/10/2006 19:19

my ds uses that kbear, it is good isnt it. glad i dont get them, when hes got half a dozen he sits there mouth open dribbling

jakesbadmummy · 20/10/2006 19:25

How strange to see a thread on mouth ulcers. I have just errupted in about 12 on my gums, roof of mouth and tongue (never had more than about 2 before). I wonder if it is something going round that is causing them.

A friend advised me to have Adcortyl, so tried it earlier and it glued my mouth together.
I would recommend that you stick (no pun intended) to using it at bedtime.

Hope they go soon, they are horrid

foxinsocks · 20/10/2006 19:27

I get them quite often - also Anbesol is good (think you can get that for babies aswell)

the stuff Kbear recommends is brilliant when they are really huge and painful
