Given that the infection appears to have spread, my gut reaction is that it's that the ABs haven't kicked in and not due to the vaccination. I'd take him back tomorrow or if he wakes in the night.

SoupDragon · 10/10/2006 21:33

(nb, I'm not medically trained at all)

ediemay · 10/10/2006 21:33

What a worry. Could you ring NHS Direct? I have found them really reassuring in the past. Can you check on his hand & arm while he's sleeping? Not wishing to sound like my MUm but sleep is often the best medicine - I know this is NO help at all when you're worried though.

misspollyhadadolly · 10/10/2006 21:35

Lisa, don't leave this overnight. Call the GP out again, or go back to A&E.

Could be a reaction to tetanus (although he really did need to have it) or could be infection worsening.

Either way, it doesn't sound right.

Go back to A&E tonight, just for reassurance if nothing else.

Good Luck, hope he feels better soon

Tiggiwinkle · 10/10/2006 21:39

It sounds as if the infection is apreading. I would tkae him back to A and E tonight if I were you. (One of my DSs had an infection in his leg once and we were told to take him immediately if the redness apread further).

Why dont you ring NHS direct-you could get advice without actually disturbing him?

threebob · 10/10/2006 22:20

Have they draw around the swelling so you can see if it's growing or shrinking.

Has he got celulitis - when I get it I always feel like absolute crap for a day or two even on AB's.

I would bolster him up with probiotics to help with the ABs and also the vaccination.

CreepyJess · 10/10/2006 22:21

Don't like the sound of the 'long line of red'.. isn't this associated with sceptacemia? (Sorry if this is wrong. Gut instinct and if he was my child, I will take him to hosptial tonight.)

CreepyJess · 10/10/2006 22:23

Actually I think he definitely needs seeing tonight. Sorry to sound alarmist.. but don't like the sound of his symptoms and you don't know if he's in a 'normal' sleep.

lulumama · 10/10/2006 22:23

TBH - i think you should take him to A&E tonight...if immune system already compromised and infection spreading - could get serious.....i know it's a pain to disturb him, but could be worse by the morning.. sorry to be gloomy - or call NHS direct...

lulumama · 10/10/2006 22:24

if you are worried, which you clearly are, then you won't relax until he is seen to anyway, so why not go to A&E tonight....

As I said, when my DS had a similar infection, we were certainly told to watch carefully for any spread. Infections like this can be very serious if they take hold and get into the bloodstream.

hulababy · 10/10/2006 22:26

Have to admit I'd be wanting to take him back in tonight. The long line of red sounds like the infection spreading.

Loshad · 10/10/2006 22:29

I too would take him in. You did do the right thing about having the tetanus jab - it is a really serious condition even these days, and often found in garden soil and so forth.

thank you - am in merseyside!! from manchester origionally, but some family & friends in London!

missymoosal · 11/10/2006 00:13

When you went to a+e did they take any blood samples? Am concerned that he feels cold and shivery. Have you actually cheked his temp? When temps get high you get 'rigors' ie they shiver and shake and especially in children their extremities feel cold,a possible sign of sepsis. If you do not take him tonight I suggest he sleeps in your bed so that you can keep a close eye on him.
The problem with alot of children is they can seem fine and then quickly deteriorate. They compensate for a time and then are overwhelmed by an infection. It is not a normal reaction to feel dizzy after a tetanus jab.
Giving this advice as an A+E nurse. Please watch him VERY closely and trust your instincts. It is far better to bring him in and be sure all is well he can catch up on sleep later.
