Recovering from a haemorrhoidectomy . . . warning: TMI alert . . .

Puffykins · 10/11/2014 21:13

Has anybody ever had a heamorrhoidectomy, and if so, please can you tell me how long recovery took? I'm on day 12 now, and am still in considerable pain - I can't walk anywhere except the bathroom for the endless baths I take, can barely sit up unless I'm on my special donut cushion and even then only last up to 45 minutes. I have two young children, and I just feel that this is so unfair on them. And I'm getting kind of depressed about my lack of progress. I need someone to give me hope. Please?!
(P.S. If anyone is considering having one: strongly consider it. I've never experienced anything more painful than the first 4 days post op, EVER. I would gladly have given birth every day rather than going through the pain I was subject to.)

@Dogwalker1 not the sort of thing you share with friends over coffee 😁

I'm sure it's all normal, just another thing we weren't warned about in advance!

AniseedBall · 15/11/2019 14:32

Hi ladies, how are you all getting on? I hope you are all making good progress.

I was 7 weeks post op and had my best day yesterday, felt almost normal for the whole day and that was with being busy too. Even the dreaded lump looked a bit smaller! Slight backwards step today, pain with BM but I do feel like I'm getting there. My BMs are still a bit all over the place but I guess this is to be expected as I still have wounds internally. I wonder if I've had such big changes with them because my wounds are internal 🤔

AniseedBall · 15/11/2019 14:33

Am 7 weeks post op, not was!

Shittyshittybangbang2019 · 15/11/2019 16:20

Sorry to jump on what we’re your symptoms of piles? I’m having an awful time at the moment with mucus discharge

AniseedBall · 15/11/2019 18:54

@Shittyshittybangbang2019 mine were internal prolapsing haemorrhoids. I could see them, they were painful and I had mucus discharge when they were particularly bad.

Do you have any other symptoms? Have you seen a doctor?

Shittyshittybangbang2019 · 15/11/2019 19:11

I was examined by doctor yes. I’ve had a bad reaction to flucloxicillin which gave me the runs and caused the flare up of the internal piles. No other symptoms other than that. I don’t even have much pain really just uncomfortable when I go to the loo

AniseedBall · 15/11/2019 19:39

@Shittyshittybangbang2019 hopefully with some suppositories they will be sorted soon.

Mine were caused and then worsened after another surgery by reactions to antibiotics. Then with the swelling from my other surgery I couldn't get rid of them. Antibiotics can cause horrible side effects!!

Shittyshittybangbang2019 · 15/11/2019 19:48

@AniseedBall I am so pleased I posted on here it helps me so much hearing someone has had similar symptoms because I have awful health anxiety and this has got me up the wall

Dogwalker1 · 15/11/2019 23:09

Hi,
@AnseedBall I’m glad to hear that things are improving, I too have had a good couple of days and if it wasn’t for the very slight discharge and slight swelling I would say I’ve fully recovered.

Welcome @Shittyshittybangbang2019. My symptoms pre op were a discharge which made me feel v unclean and occasional bleeding which, when it started, would last for weeks and meant that I’d have to have them checked to rule out anything sinister. Very, very occasionally my haemorrhoids would cause me pain but this was quite rare and sorted with prescription ointments. It was also tricky to try and clean after a BM without either bathing or using loads of wet wipes.
Interesting to hear both of your stories about antibiotics, causing the runs and a worsening of symptoms. I had an allergic (explosive 😰) reaction to an anti sickness medication which caused a massive increase of my symptoms.

Dogwalker1 · 16/11/2019 13:00

I shouldn’t have tempted fate by saying how improved i was. Today after BM it was stinging, hard to clean afterwards and a bit more swollen. I feel like I’ve gone back days 😨 I hope it’s just a blip.

AniseedBall · 16/11/2019 21:08

@Dogwalker1 I hope you're back on track tomorrow. It's so frustrating when you feel you are doing really well and then go backwards for no apparent reason. It's so positive that you were feeling almost fully recovered before today. Fingers crossed it won't be much longer now until you are.

I've had a crappy day, pain after BM (3 again 😬) and it took a good few hours for it to subside. Not pain like the very early days but annoying for this stage, especially after my good day on Thursday. I'm trying to keep positive but it's very draining being so up and down with progress for all these weeks.

Dogwalker1 · 17/11/2019 16:54

@AniseedBall 3 BMs is not great, poor you. No wonder you are still suffering. I hope today was better than yesterday and you are soon having more days like you had on Thursday. I had a couple of days when I went again almost straight after the first BM. Even that has an impact as the cleaning disturbs everything and Im sure doesn't help with the healing.

Are you having yours all within a short time frame? Or are they spaced out through out the day? Are you still taking Movicol?

I've been taking photos on my iPad for the last 10 days to check for any improvement without disturbing the area. Please, please don't let me ever, ever lose my iPad!!! I am looking forward to the day when I can delete them all but for now it is encouraging seeing the improvement in healing and swelling compared to ten days ago.

I'm pretty sure now that I'm having a little leakage after BMs. At first i thought it was blood but i think that has stopped now and I can see that it is liquid poo. It's as if I haven't cleaned myself afterwards properly (which I have) and even though it is a tiny amount I didn't have this problem before. I'm hoping that it is just because I'm still taking the movicol but I daren't stop that as my wounds haven't 100% healed yet.
I see the consultant on Wednesday so I hope she can reassure me that that will clear up soon.

AniseedBall · 18/11/2019 19:59

Hi @Dogwalker1 how are you getting on?

Things got worse here yesterday and I ended up going 4 times 😭 My stomach felt a bit off so I don't know if it was something I'd eaten. This must be delaying my healing and I was so determined to avoid this before I had the op. I've no idea what's happened but it's all gone a wrong! Only 2 BM today though so hoping yesterday was a one off!! It is all in a short space of time, the first couple of hours in the morning, rather than throughout the day. I don't know if that's better or worse for healing but at least it's convenient as I'm home then.

I am still taking Movicol twice a day but slightly less and trying to add in prune juice too. I gave it up and then goodness know how but my BM got hard and more Movicol doesn't seem to suit me. It doesn't soften things just makes me go more and gives me BM that are difficult to pass in a different way. I don't really know what to do other than keep on trying. I didn't have any of these issues before the op 🙁

The depressing thing is once I'm through all this I'm not cured. I'll probably be living with another lump or having another op. I've been taking photos too and then deleting them so they are in my deleted items (so hopefully no one will see them but it does mean I've lost the earliest ones). I think the lump is smaller than at the very start but seems to have stopped shrinking now. I hope yours carries on shrinking and you get good news at your appointment on Wednesday.

I still have a little discharge after a BM and a bit of leakage too (which I also didn't have beforehand) but that is getting better so fingers crossed it stops altogether soon. I hope that's the same for you!

Dogwalker1 · 18/11/2019 21:24

Hi @AniseedBall - 4 times? That is really awful. Your comment about when you gave up the movicol and everything getting really hard made me think about the differences between a laxative eg Movicol and a stool softener and came across the following
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/322621.php#which-constipation-relief-method-is-best-for-me
Also this
MOVICOL® softens the stool and bulks it up slightly. As the stool gently expands, it naturally triggers colonic activity and a bowel movement
Movicol is a Osmotic laxative.

I have found stool softeners make me bloated and windy but maybe for you they might soften everything without having the effect of triggering a bowel movement which is making you go so often. Stool softeners take longer to work so if you do try swopping bear this in mind. Your swelling probably isn't being given a chance to settle either going so much. Maybe ask your GP if swopping Movicol for something else is an option?

What I don't understand is the discharge. My poos are soft but not liquid like the tiny amount of leakage I have afterwards. I have thought about stopping the Movicol to see if it stops but I'm too afraid to experiment seeing I'm am just going once a day.

I completely sympathise with you worrying if you are no better after this op than before. I am worried about that too but not sure if I would be brave enough to have anything else done.

AniseedBall · 19/11/2019 21:16

Thanks @Dogwalker1 that's really interesting reading. If things don't pick up I'll definitely go and see my GP. I've tried lactulose before and it really bloated me up and gave me a lot of pain. I think the prune juice is a natural alternative but does have some laxative qualities too so maybe there's an alternative a GP could suggest. Thankfully I've been back to 2 BMs the last couple of days which is great. Although there was blood for the first time in a while this morning 😭 I've no idea why but there generally isn't an explanation with this op!!

Re your leakage, could it be discharge that has got darker? As mine has got less the colour has darkened (grim sorry!!). I am also definitely getting some stool leakage too though 🙁 I didn't have this pre op and was taking Movicol then so I'm hoping it is part of the recovery and will go. My Consultant didn't really comment when I asked at my appointment. I hope you get some reassurance/ explanation at your check up tomorrow. I hope it goes well and they answer any questions you have.

Dogwalker1 · 20/11/2019 00:03

Thanks @AniseedBall. Fingers crossed I get some answers - I’ll let you know!

Dogwalker1 · 20/11/2019 16:02

Hi @AniseedBall they changed my appointment at the last minute so I ended up seeing another consultant today. My first reaction was 🙁 especially as on my notes he said it seemed to show that the two small ones weren’t banded after all and I just had the large one removed but he couldn’t be sure that it wasn’t a mistake. I certainly felt as if something had been banded, and the sensation did stop after around a week, but I guess the pain was so bad in that first week who knows what the heck I was feeling.

He was quite reassuring when I listed my concerns before the examination: Discharge, leakage, not quite healed yet and swelling. He said that all those concerns were not unusual at this stage and that he warns all his patients beforehand that this is all to be expected and that our bottoms are not going to behave like our bottoms for a while post op. In fact he went on to say that this is why he doesn’t see his patients at six weeks - he prefers to see them at around three months post op. This is because if there are still issues at this later point then they are less likely to resolve themselves. He did stress that there are things they can do re leakage if this is still ongoing but at this point he wasn’t concerned. I was really detailed in my description of the small amount of leakage which I have in the first couple of hours after a BM and he said what I was describing was what a lot of people at this stage still have.

He asked me about my two births and he said this always weakens your pelvic floor and has an impact on the recovery time after this op. He also seemed to think that my vaginal repair could have an effect on recovery too. I asked about doing pelvic floor exercises as I was worried that this would aggravate the wound but he thought that they would help. I think the fact that I’ve been a lot less active since the op won’t have helped my pelvic floor so I’m going to try to fix that in the coming weeks.

On examination he commented that there was some healing still to be done but it was too uncomfortable around the entrance for me to have a probe so he was unable to look further up. He didn’t seem to think that there was much swelling at all so perhaps I have to lower my expectations of the final cosmetic result.

I mentioned the mucous, although to be honest that has almost stopped, and he said if that was still an ongoing problem they would have do a colonoscopy to see what was the cause.

So although I’m a bit miffed that they messed up by not giving me an appointment and then I booked one for six weeks, which turns out to be too early and not being 100% sure about what was done, I do feel reassured. I am really sore though even from the brief examination so I might have gone back a few steps as I’m sure the wound has been reopened a bit more today.

Hopefully this will reassure you too as we’ve both had vaginal repairs and are having some similar symptoms.

Glad to hear you are down to 2 BMs a day - I hope it continues. The consultant also said to continue with the Movicol as that wasn’t the cause of the leakage.

Dogwalker1 · 20/11/2019 16:07

Forgot to say that he wants to make my next appointment in around eight weeks and I don’t think that is because of NHS waiting times!

AniseedBall · 20/11/2019 20:33

Hi @Dogwalker1 thanks for sharing that. It's really helpful and I'm sure it will be as a reference for anyone reading in future. I hope you are feeling more comfortable this evening after the examination.

It's great to hear that all these symptoms aren't unusual and should go in time. Again, if only we were warned in advance!! The pelvic floor stuff is interesting too, especially how previous repairs can affect recovery, my Consultant is supposed to be a colorectal pelvic floor specialist and he hasn't mentioned any of that. I guess it makes sense that if the pelvic floor is weaker there might be more symptoms like leakage than in someone who hasn't. I've been doing exercises when I can, sometimes it's a bit painful on one of the wounds but mostly ok now.

My next appointment was supposed to be 6-8 weeks when he thought everything should be properly healed, with Christmas it's going to be 6, so just before Christmas. As they've both agreed on that time frame I wonder if that's when you can really expect things to be healed and all the other symptoms should have gone. I desperately hope my BM have settled down by then. I'm finding this stage of recovery is really dragging 🙁It just seems to be backwards steps at the moment. I'm due a good day tomorrow!! Hope you have one too.

Dogwalker1 · 21/11/2019 08:26

@AniseedBall yes I hope we both have good days today! I can’t believe how sore I was after yesterday’s examination - I’m still a bit sore this morning but not as bad as last night. He only felt around with one finger so no probe but I feel really bruised and bashed.

AniseedBall · 21/11/2019 08:42

@Dogwalker1 oh my goodness, no wonder you were sore! Just the thought of that, even now makes my knees go weak!! Glad my was just a good look.

Dogwalker1 · 21/11/2019 08:57

@AniseedBall I thought you’d had the whole probe thing at your check up! I was thinking I am a complete wimp.

AniseedBall · 21/11/2019 09:04

@Dogwalker1 absolutely not a wimp!! It must have been excruciating. I was expecting it (and took some paracetamol on the way in preparation) but thankfully he was able to see enough without.

AniseedBall · 21/11/2019 13:15

@Dogwalker1 I forgot to ask, did the doctor you saw comment on how much Movicol to take? After another bad BM morning I'm ditching the prune juice and going back to just Movicol!

Dogwalker1 · 21/11/2019 13:40

@AniseedBall Prune juice does sound a bit too effective! No he didn’t say how much to take as he asked about how often I was going and whether it was soft. I’m taking just under a sachet a day divided into two. It doesn’t seem to matter when I take the first half but I always take the second glass just before bed.

We are both having bad mornings. 😨 I’m still sore from yesterday and have been twice, one first thing and another just now. But I’ve had the most significant leakage since this started. Before I was examining it and thinking is it poo or not but this morning there was no doubt. I’m trying not to worry as my examination yesterday was probably the reason but I am a bit concerned.

I read that haemorrhoids if they are swollen can prevent the sphincter muscle from being able to close properly and that this can result in leakage. Surely any trauma until it is fully resolved involves swelling? I mentioned this to the consultant yesterday and he didn’t seem to think so. But my bum feels a lot more traumatised than it did before the examination and now I’ve got suddenly more leakage, surely that can’t be a coincidence?!

Has your leakage cleared up or does it vary from day to day depending on how many times you’ve been to the loo? I’m willing to give up any idea of a porn star bum but I’m not prepared to put up with this 😰
