Screaming in pain with a sore bottom. What can I do?

Ds1 has had a sore bottom now for over three weeks. It's bright red and looks agony. He screams with pain during the day and is awake most of the night in pain. I have taken him to the GP's more than half a dozen times and nothing seems to be working.

We started off with sudocream then preparation H due to desperation. The doctor then prescribed him lidicaine gel and that made it worse. Then he prescribed hydrocortazone cream (please excuse spellings) and that just spreaded it. At the moment we are putting on drapolene but it doesn't ease it for long.

It's so difficult seeing him in pain and not being able to do anything to help him. I'm at my wits end because ds2 is also ill and I feel it's a conspiracy in the night. When one sleeps the other wakes and vice versa.

Can anyone suggest anything or does anyone know of anything that might have caused this inflammation? Please help! I'm desperate. If that was my bottom I'd be crying none stop.

My Ds poos about 7 times a day at the moment due to some food intolerences which has made him very sore and he has had some bleeding. I find that kamilosan is the best for him as forms a barrier whilst healing at the same time.

Hope it gets better for him soon, poor little mite.

Kazziegirl · 11/04/2004 20:20

Poor thing - Metanium always worked really well with my two - it clears redness up overnight. Hope it eases soon. Let us know how he goes.

Nutcracker · 11/04/2004 20:23

My ds had this problem a week or so ago and we used Bepanthen cream. We got it from Sainsbury's, not sure where else you can get it from.
It is quite thick and greasy but it did the trick and ds's bum was better in a couple of days.

carla · 11/04/2004 20:24

Poor Flip and Flipett. Try Metanium, from behind the couter at your Chemist's (don't know why). Only thing that ever worked for us. Good luck and big hugs.

goosey · 11/04/2004 20:27

Could it be thrush? If it is then it will only respond to ani-fungal cream.
I always find the best relief is to be found by leaving my ds without hs nappy for as long as possible. I wash him gently with mild soap and water then blow-dry his bum to make sure it's really dry. I find that barrier creams do not allow the soreness to heal. My son is nearly 2.

I'm writing all these down so I can bombard the pharmacist tomorrow. I can't carry on like this and neither can he.

What would thrush look like on his bottom?

I have been leaving him without a nappy at night to let air get to it but he wet's the bed as well which doesn't help. I've gone through a mountain of care mats. BTW he's five!

Flip how old is your Ds. I cant really leave nappy off mine as not used to boys and he pees everywhere , but the Kamilosan instantly calms him after ive wiped his bum and is usually cleared by next day. Was really good when i was breast feeding too (sore nipples)

charlieplus3 · 11/04/2004 20:32

Too late we crossed threads

Nutcracker · 11/04/2004 20:33

What about using Canestan cream. That way if it is thrush it should help. Won't harm if it isn't thrush either i shouldn't think.

goosey · 11/04/2004 20:35

Thrush would just look red and angry and wouldn't respond to normal creams. The more concentrate his urine is the more it will irritate his bottom further. But it's a vicious circle isn't it, as if he drinks more he will wet more.Poor little chap - I hope it clears up quickly for him.

Flip · 11/04/2004 20:36

Would the GP know if it looked like thrush? The GP has looked at his bottom after I insisted on my seventh visit in two weeks. He just winced and wrote him another precription that time for hydrocortazone cream.

If it was thrush, would it spread by putting creams on because it does seem to be spreading. Also there's other little patches of red now on his bum cheeks which look like little spots.

have you searched on google? there will be some info and possibly diagrams of what thrush would look like....
hth

goosey · 11/04/2004 20:40

I wouldn't be surprised if some gps missed thrush. Another thing worth trying would be salt baths.

goodkate · 11/04/2004 20:52

Like Kazziegirl mentioned I found Metonium works really well usually. But dd2 had a sore bottom for which I could find no cure. I tried everything and it drove the poor dd crazy. Then my mum said why don't you change the make of nappy. I changed from pampers to huggies, and bingo it cleared in a couple of days.

I hope it clears up quickly, it must be awful. let us know.

Metonium's been the best for dd even when she's been REALLY sore. Has he had this before? I think the main thing is to find the cause as there usually is one. With dd it's always teeth but if your ds is five I doubt it's that! And if it's something like thrush all the normal nappy creams won't work. I'd get back onto your GP.

goodkate · 11/04/2004 21:04

sorry misread your thread, I thought he was 5 months. Doh! Won't be in nappies then!!

Metanium always worked for my dd's. Its quite dry so it tends to keep the bottom dry. I use it on my 4 yo.

bossykate · 11/04/2004 21:12

this must be really upsetting for you and misery for him. if you don't get any joy with metanium and/or canesten in the next day, i wouldn't hesitate to take to your local paeds a&e to get him checked out. it sounds as though your gp is flummoxed, so i really wouldn't hesitate to go to specialists.

i really hope something works for you soon.

Dh took ds1 to A&E last night because he screamed none stop for over an hour. They to were none the wiser as to what it could be and sent him home with no treatment and instructions to go back to the GP. So we didn't get much sleep last night with ds1 screaming in pain and ds2 up coughing all night until he was sick and struggling to breathe.

I'm going to go along the route of thrush and treat it as that. Nothing else has worked so I've got nothing to lose. Except more sleep. There will definitley not be a ds3 or dd!

charlieplus3 · 12/04/2004 09:28

Oh poor you Flip and poor DS. Cant believe they didnt treat him. Hope it gets sorted soon

tiredemma · 12/04/2004 19:39

my ds2 had a particulary bad case of nappy rash which did turn to thrush, doctor prescribed "RANOTRIM CREAM" which contains clotrimazole, cleared up in 2 days but gave instant relief, ive still got a full tube of it, if your doc is being a pain then ill gladly send it to you.
hope this helps. x
