Screaming in pain with a sore bottom. What can I do?

Ds1 has had a sore bottom now for over three weeks. It's bright red and looks agony. He screams with pain during the day and is awake most of the night in pain. I have taken him to the GP's more than half a dozen times and nothing seems to be working.

We started off with sudocream then preparation H due to desperation. The doctor then prescribed him lidicaine gel and that made it worse. Then he prescribed hydrocortazone cream (please excuse spellings) and that just spreaded it. At the moment we are putting on drapolene but it doesn't ease it for long.

It's so difficult seeing him in pain and not being able to do anything to help him. I'm at my wits end because ds2 is also ill and I feel it's a conspiracy in the night. When one sleeps the other wakes and vice versa.

Can anyone suggest anything or does anyone know of anything that might have caused this inflammation? Please help! I'm desperate. If that was my bottom I'd be crying none stop.

Oh Flip, poor you and him
Metanium is our cream of choice for very sore bottoms, as noted by others here, its very good

That said, I think its bloody disgraceful that your GP and the A and E dept have failed to sort it. I don't understand why your GP gave lidnocaine gel alone - its an anaesthetic, it wouldn't clear it up and a few people don't tolerate it topically anyway, stupid GP

Anyway, it may seem a daft suggestion, but have you seen one of the health visitors / practice nurses or similar? They are usually more experienced at recognising something like this than the GP's. If that fails, I would ask for - insist on - an immediate referral to a paediatrician and / or dermatologist.

In the meantime, lots of fresh air to his bum, plenty of water (he will wee more but it will be less acidic) and perhaps calpol or similar at night to ease him???

Let us know how you get on, won't you

Dh gave me a fuller explaination of what had happened at A&E last night when he came round this morning. It turned out that the doctor had no idea what the rash was so said for him to take him back to the GP's immediatley and get him reffered to the children's admissions so a peadiatrition could take a look. So I called the out of ours GP and took him to a medical centre. I could barely understand the doctor and he said not to worry it would clear up on his own. I almost screamed three bloody weeks at him but I kept calm. I knew I wasn't going to get anywhere he barely looked up from his computer. He gave him yet more cream and sent us away. Needless to say I'm not happy and if we have another night like last night I will be charging into my own GP's surgery tomorrow and throwing one hell of a tantrum. Wish me luck!

flip, do you have a paediatric A&E near you? where are you based?

Soulfly · 12/04/2004 20:27

My daughter suffered from that for most of her days in nappies, although she was younger than your son flip, hers was so sore it used to bleed, tried all sorts of creams, and one the doctor prescribed and it was well to strong for her, i tried germaline, vasaline, sudocream, you name it i tried it. so sorry flip, it must be awful and hope you find out whats wrong soon.

If it was thrush wouldn't it be itchy? Is he itching at it?

Flip · 12/04/2004 20:31

No there's no peads A&E that I know of. You have to get a refferal from your GP to access the peads ward.

And soulfly, he is itching. I've even put socks on his hands but he just pulls them off.

I would say that is thrush, its horrible. It it was normal rash like nappy rash, it wouldn't itch i wouldn't think.

Flip · 12/04/2004 20:36

Most types of inflammation itch. I think it's something to do with the increased blood flow. Although I am leaning towards pretty bad thrush.

Hi Flip. How did things go last night? How is he now and is the cream starting to work? DO you leave his nappy off during the day or does that make things worse? Am thinking of you. GF

Hi Flip, did you get to the GP this morning? Any luck?

Flip · 13/04/2004 20:27

The good news is that I didn't need to go to the GP's this morning. Miracle of miracle's he hasn't complained once about his bottom today or last night. I think the anti fungal cream is working. If only I'd asked mumsnet sooner. I'd never given thrush a thought. This place is full of geniuses and I am in their debt. Thank you so much to everyone who posted. I really can't thank you enough.

Hi Flip, glad to hear your ds's bot is a bit better. Can't believe your GP didn't think of thrush - useless!

goosey · 13/04/2004 21:21

That's great news Flip. I'm so glad he is not hurting so much.
