Why? What are your specific concerns?

FuckyNell · 02/10/2014 23:19

Yabu

WhatsGoingOnEh · 02/10/2014 23:19

Ebola, I'm guessing?

Factually I know there's probably no risk but no, I wouldn't like it either.

OraProNobis · 02/10/2014 23:19

What's your concern? Is it Ebola? You do realise that the guy on the bus who you've never seen before and won't see again could have infected you when he sneezed? Do you see? It's futile to worry yourself like this.

TrickoftheMind · 02/10/2014 23:23

Is it a full moon?

Wonders what has brought about a clutch of bizarrely ill-informed posts about flu and Ebola tonight

donefornow · 02/10/2014 23:24

Oh sorry, yeah forgot you're not all mind readers Grin was worried about Ebola

BaffledSomeMore · 02/10/2014 23:26

Sure I heard somewhere (MN?) that Nigeria hadn't had any new cases in September.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/10/2014 23:27

Does he wash his hands? If not, he should start. Just generally, not specifically for Ebola.

donefornow · 02/10/2014 23:29

Oh that's good news baffled. It must be terrifying for those living in effected areas of Africa.

OP posts:
donefornow · 02/10/2014 23:31

I'd like to think he washes his hands... Probably not to my standard however Wink

DorisIsALittleBitPartial · 02/10/2014 23:32

Ora, it's not airborne so you can't catch it from sneezing.

AnguaResurgam · 02/10/2014 23:34

Nigeria has had just the one case, hasn't it? Someone who was infected outside that country.

If that's right, the risk is similar to a regular traveller to Texas.

grocklebox · 02/10/2014 23:37

Oh you cannot be serious. Read some serious articles instead of the red tops and learn something about it. You are being utterly ridiculous.

I still find it slightly concerning but I'm glad you all think IBU better than you all saying you'd be extremely concerned.. I am an anxious person and abit of a germaphobe and this has got me worried

Kleptronic · 02/10/2014 23:52

Well, where in Africa? It's vast with, I don't know, about 30 countries in it?

grocklebox · 02/10/2014 23:54
  1. Or 53 if you include all the islands.

You're at zero risk for ebola.

CountYourEyelashes · 02/10/2014 23:58

Unless your DHs workmate pukes all over him, or licks him, I think he'll be fine. AFAIK it is spread through bodily fluids, not airborne.

If you're worried though you could perhaps brief DH on the symptoms, what to do if his workmate appears sick, and good hygiene. He'll be fine

hackneylady · 03/10/2014 00:01

Your husband...works with...someone who...lives with...someone who travels to a country where there's not that much Ebola.

Have a look at this little girl in the picture. Now that's fear.

Kleptronic · 03/10/2014 00:04

47 countries eh. Or 53. I really should google more!

AnguaResurgam · 03/10/2014 00:07

The thread title specifies Nigeria, where there has been a case, but IIRC that was someone who had visited Liberia.

OP, I think your concerns are completely understandable. It is a horrible disease and it has been all over the news today and WHO are taking a pessimistic stance about the exponential rise in countries with weak and overwhelmed healthcare systems (and they are asking about doubling fortnightly). That is indeed a crisis.

But there is no use in worrying ahead of events. It has been contained in countries with better health infrastructure. The increase in case numbers is woeful for the people in outbreak areas, but that does not mean that it poses a global risk. Now, if the spread increases the assessments could change. But right now, the risk posed by contact with a family member of a traveller to a non-outbreak destination is vanishingly minuscule.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/10/2014 00:13

Kleptronic the number/names of countries changes all the time. I studied African Politics and when I went to East Africa, one of the countries I went to had a border with a country that had changed in the intervening time. I was completely confused.

There have been as many cases diagnosed in the USA as Nigeria, haven't there? Anyone worried about their DH talking to someone who is family of someone American? Thought not...

HPparent · 03/10/2014 00:16

Please try not to worry. In your case the colleagues dad would have to become ill, pass it on to colleague and then be ill in the presence of your DH. It is not that easy to catch.

BIL works in Nigeria from time to time and kidnapping is more of a risk (oil industry).

My boss is going to Nigeria next week for a holiday, he is understandably concerned about his relations, but Africa is a massive place.

Kleptronic · 03/10/2014 00:18

Oh I'm sorry, I'm on my phone, I can't see Nigeria in the thread title, I apologise.

Stratter5 · 03/10/2014 00:23

Nigeria has a decent healthcare infrastructure, and they have successfully contained the virus. There have been no new cases resulting from the initial infection.
