I did my BMI on one of those charts, and it was 34! I am horrified. I have always been overweight, but have never been this heavy in my life - bizarrly my 4 year old jeans have survived two babies and still fit, but maybe they are growing with me?

But this is more of a health thing than an appearance thing. I obviously am carrying too much weight and most of it is on my front and waist - not good. I am only 26. I don't want to be like this for the rest of my life. The minute I start to think about dieting, it makes me want to eat crap. I eat too much, even when it is good healthy food, I eat too much of it!

Please give me a pep talk that will keep me going! I am going to keep a food diary on here, to make me face it

1 fried egg sandwich
1 sausage
1 and 1/2 burger
2 and 1/2 white bread rolls
good handful of salad
5 small new potatoes
1 tablespoon fried onions.
2 cans lemonade
1 small piece of gateau
1 options hot chocolate.

I know. It's appalling.

colditz · 23/09/2006 10:14

I have decided to tacked fat and snacks this week. Next week I will tackle sugar and portion sizes.

OP posts:
colditz · 23/09/2006 22:43

Right, todays total (more than planned, but hey)

1 bowl of porridge made with water and 1% milk

2 pears
2 small poached eggs on white bread toast (was out and didn't have choice of bread)

Small roast chicken leg, thigh and wing, sans skin
3 small roast potatoes (about half a fist sized potato)
Heaps and heap of carrots and cauliflower
Some mashed sweet potato (1 dollop)

10 black olives

4 cups of tea, each with 2 sugars and 1% milk

colditz · 23/09/2006 22:44

Right, not very diety.

I'm not great at this! But I am eating a lot healthier than I usually do.

OP posts:
Quadrophenia · 23/09/2006 22:45

that all sounds really great well done!!

puff · 23/09/2006 22:45

Well done colditz

colditz · 23/09/2006 22:45

Sounds like rather a lot though, doesn't it?

Does it?

OP posts:
Quadrophenia · 23/09/2006 22:48

I don't think so Colditz

puff · 23/09/2006 22:48

No, it sounds fine in terms of regulating what you are eating. The only thing that "shouts" out at me is the sugars in the tea - any chance you can wean yourself down on the amount of sugar?

Quadrophenia · 23/09/2006 22:49

the tea sugar shouted at me too, but only becasue it sounds yuk

colditz · 23/09/2006 22:52

That is the thing with me too. The only way I could do it is by using sweetener.

Up until 2 days ago I was taking full fat milk in my tea, so it still tastes a bit strange. When I get used to it I will try to wean the sugar down.

You would certainly lose weight steadily colditz on that regime - swapping the white bread for wholemeal obviously would be good and cutting out/substantially reducing the sugar.

puff · 23/09/2006 22:53

You've made a great start - like I said, take it steady, and make the changes along the way .

colditz · 24/09/2006 11:17

Honey nut shredded wheat for brekkie, with 1% milk.

Going swimming this evening with lean friend! I am excited, I haven't been adult swimming for years!

I am hell bent this time. Ususally I have a vague idea that I should perhaps eat less. Not this time. This time I am cutting the crap, it has just reached critical on my BMI thing. I could ignore it before, but now it is time to act. The next step up on the bmi thing is 35, and that is very obese(apparently - I must admit I don't feel very obese) so I am aiming to get it down to 25, which isabout 10 stone for me.

I have a lot to lose, but I have some money stashed upstairs that I am only allowed to spend on size 12 clothes

You could be writing about me, colditz. I watched Diet Doctors earlier this week and was shocked. The woman who was on was just like me.

Best of luck - sounds like you've made a fantastic start.

FrannyandZooey · 24/09/2006 12:44

Colditz you would be very welcome on the 10 / 10 thread where we are trying to improve our general health and wellbeing. It isn't a diet thread but we all try to eat at least 10 portions of fruit and veg each day and do some form of physical exercise. It's great to have the support of other MNers when you are trying to make changes so if it would help you, do join us on there. Meanwhile good luck and it sounds like you are very determined to improve your fitness

Dottydot · 24/09/2006 17:42

Colditz - I was a 2 tsps of sugar in my coffee girl - have now switched to sweetners - it took me about a fortnight to get used to it but 8 weeks later and my taste buds have got over the shock and coffee tastes good! I would have 5 - 8 cups of coffee a day, so just cutting out all that sugar has made a big difference. But I still have some sugar on my cereal - it's got to be long term and not make you feel like a martyr, so go with the changes you think you'll be able to sustain.

HowVeryDareYou · 24/09/2006 18:05

My friend said to me "Remember - Nothing tastes as good as thin feels" and thinking that while just about to eat something you really don't need/want soon stops you. Works for me - have lost 3 stone this year through a combination of eating less & exercising more and remembering how nice it feels to be thin again.

colditz · 24/09/2006 22:23

Have switched to a canserel type thing. I suppose it's not too bad.

the first one of the day still gets sugar though, ditto if I am not at home.

So in total, today I had
honey nut shredded wheat w/1% milk
2 pears
1 tin tuna (130 cals) with 2 slices seeded batch toast (260 cals) and 1 blob of thousand island dressing (100 cals? less?)
1 banana
1 large jacket potato with 1/2 tin beans, big pile of mixed veg, and leg and thigh of small chicken, skin off.
1 options drink (in a minute!)

Thanks F&Z, I will come and join in. And a massive thanks to everyone on this thread who has helped and encouraged me.

I went swimming (adult) today for the first time in years, did 22 lengths, and found out that for £13.50 a month you can have unlimited swimming! So will be joining!

The swimming's a brilliant idea! Congratulations on all the changes you're making and good luck!
