I did my BMI on one of those charts, and it was 34! I am horrified. I have always been overweight, but have never been this heavy in my life - bizarrly my 4 year old jeans have survived two babies and still fit, but maybe they are growing with me?

But this is more of a health thing than an appearance thing. I obviously am carrying too much weight and most of it is on my front and waist - not good. I am only 26. I don't want to be like this for the rest of my life. The minute I start to think about dieting, it makes me want to eat crap. I eat too much, even when it is good healthy food, I eat too much of it!

Please give me a pep talk that will keep me going! I am going to keep a food diary on here, to make me face it

1 fried egg sandwich
1 sausage
1 and 1/2 burger
2 and 1/2 white bread rolls
good handful of salad
5 small new potatoes
1 tablespoon fried onions.
2 cans lemonade
1 small piece of gateau
1 options hot chocolate.

I know. It's appalling.

I do the Davina Mc Call 30 minute workout dvd It's really good and easy to fit into your day.

colditz · 21/09/2006 23:03

Swimming sounds good. I know I can swim 1/2 a mile, so if I do that 3 times a week I will get somewhere maybe!

thanks guys for all the help and gentle buttock kicking, I need it.

I am over 11 stone and i go running

moondog · 21/09/2006 23:05

Hmm Q,it did seem odd.
Eleven stone certainly isn't fat.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 21/09/2006 23:06

colditz - if you are really serious, yet worried, about doing this, go to your gp and/or join a gym. They can advise you on the best way to start exercising - maybe it'll be brisk walking at first - it doesn't matter what - as long as it's something. I don't want to sound preachey but I really passionately believe in the power of exercise and fresh air (much better than the gym, imo, depsite having just said join a gym - I meant for the advice - if they tell you to do the treadmill, go outside and pound the pavements) - it blows away the cobwebs, gets your blood pumping, it's good for your skin, it helps you sleep, and you can set yourself goals which you can then tick off. all things that are good for your confidence - which will surely help you be a bit more disciplined with your eating.

MrsSpoon · 21/09/2006 23:08

Don't know how much truth there is in it but Gillian McKeith has said re the eating loads but never feeling full/satisfied that this is because your body is looking for the vitamins and minerals it is not getting with your current diet.

Did you eat three meals today? Were the sausage and egg breakfast or lunch?

I have tried both WW and SW and found them both to be really good. If you like things like cooked breakfasts etc then SW is probably your best bet. However the best thing IMO is exercise. If you combined diet with exercise the weight would fall off so quickly.

Now I just need a good kick up my own backside as I have a few lbs creeping back on at the moment.

colditz · 21/09/2006 23:13

The egg sandwich was lunch. Breakfast didn't happen today.

The bread rolls, burger, sausage, salad and potatoes was tea, but was a barbeque, would normally be a bit better balanced.

I will be seeing my GP soon anyway, so I will talk to him then about losing some weight, but he is quite blase and will probably say "Eat less, Do more" or some such thing.

MrsSpoon · 21/09/2006 23:15

Ah, you didn't mention it was a BBQ Colditz, that's not so bad, not as if you have a BBQ every day.

Tut, tut for no breakfast though! Get the porridge out!

colditz · 21/09/2006 23:16

Oh, I know, but I hate breakfast, hate it! I have to force myself to eat it. I am never remotely hungry until lunch time.

OP posts:
colditz · 21/09/2006 23:16

but I will do it.

surely though it is just adding more calories to an already calorie-laden day?

MrsSpoon · 21/09/2006 23:21

Honestly Colditz, I am a breakfast convert it is true what they say you will truely eat less during the day if you have breakfast. Something like porridge or boiled egg and a slice of wholemeal bread or fruit and yoghurt, etc rather than sugary cereals. If I don't have time for a proper breakfast I will at least grab a banana on the way out the door.

MrsSpoon · 21/09/2006 23:22

I should clarify that by "breakfast convert" I mean I used to be like you and would say I just couldn't face breakfast in the morning.

colditz · 21/09/2006 23:23

I don't eat sugary cereals, blegh, but how can you just have one boiled egg? They are truely scrumptious!

OP posts:
ledodgyrobespierre · 21/09/2006 23:25

eggs are free in slimming world.

MrsSpoon · 21/09/2006 23:29

Just to echo Ledogy you can just about live on eggs with SW, you are allowed lots on WW No Count and even on points they are not too hefty on points either. If an extra egg stops you snacking on something much worse a couple of hours later then it is worth it.

colditz · 21/09/2006 23:33

How much should i BE PUTTING ON MY PLATE? Opps

I eat much less than my mum, she hs always eaten prodigal amounts, and I eat less than my partner who is only 9 stone so it is only recently that i have 'noticed' that I eat too much, IYSWIM.

So how much potato? How much veg, how much meat? I don't know!

OP posts:
puff · 21/09/2006 23:36

colditz, my suggestion would be to take it slowly, make small changes in the way you are eating over time.

I put on 8 stone in 4 years - won't go into why, it's tres depressing! But, for ages I battled in my head about the weight, what to do about it, whether I could face doing anything about it, cried about how long it would take to make inroads on it etc etc.

Then finally I decided I would stop beating myself up about it and just gradually make some small changes and see what happened. It started with eating breakfast (porridge) regularly, and then the other meals regularly. It didn't matter necessarily what I ate, some meals were calorie laden, but regulating my eating was the starting point. Then I moved on to returning to eating more healthily etc etc and over time the weight came off - 7 stone of it.

It can be done, but "gently does it" worked for me .

MrsApronstrings · 21/09/2006 23:43

Well done puff! I am seriuously impressed ( have been lurking somewhat as I plan to start my diet every tomorrow - and every day use that as an excuse to eat extra that day - as its my last so to speak.) I am not really over weight - but heavier than i am happy with and yo yoing in a really unhealthy way - put on 9 lbs in the last two weeks

colditz · 22/09/2006 09:20

eating porridge right now... bah!

What should I have for lunch then?

OP posts:
fairyjay · 22/09/2006 09:42

Old and boring tip I know - but drinking 2/3 litres of water each day is a big help, as it makes you feel full!

colditz · 22/09/2006 09:46

have swapped milk from 4% fat to 1% fat. I don't drink much of it anyway, I still suspect I am lactose intolerant, but we'll see.

CountessDracula · 22/09/2006 10:05

well have stuff for lunch that is low fat but fills you up

eg

pasta with tomatoey sauce (but make it nice, put garlic, fresh basil etc in) you can have a little parmesan, buy the good stuff a little goes a long way.

Wholemeal or granary bread sandwich with something not too fatty eg ham, low fat philly, tuna etc, plus heaps of salad and more on the side

The principles of low GI food are very good they have helped me a lot though I am not on a GI diet as such. It is true that if you concetrate on eating things with a lower GI then you feel full for longer. So cut out white bread, potatoes, cakes, bicuits etc.

Then other thing, and this is so true, is that you really have to bite the bullet and feel hungry for a few days until your stomach adjusts to eating less. Drink plenty of water and just have some willpower for a few days. You will feel a lot happier for it!

I also don't ahve sweets, biscuits, chocolate, crisps etc in the house as then not tempted (is better for the whole family too!). I have a policy now that if I do have biscuits I have only one or two. You just have to force yourself and it soon becomes habit and easy.
