MMR - calling all parents who opted for the single jabs

Please could you let me know roughly the procedure & costs involved. I realise that this most probably differs fromcli nic to clinic and depending on which part of the country you're in, but just a basic account of your personal experience would be great.

My dd is 10 months and I've started looking into this ahead or time as I want to try to make an informed decision, but am finding it really hard to find any information on the single vaccines.

One site of a private surgery I came across online, said that you need to have an initial 'consultation' where they discuss with you whether to go for the triple jab or the singles. Then they have to order them specifically for your child as they aren't licensed in this country and to have the single vaccinations would be over ?200. Is this typical?

I feel like I am being forced into making a decision between giving my child a triple jab which I personally feel is rather too much of a strain for a baby's immature immune system, or not having it and risking measles which can potentially cause dangerous complications.

I gave both my ds's the single vaccines and used Direct Remedies as they have an outreach clinic south of Glasgow, it averaged about 100 per vaccine but was well worth it in my opinion. Direct Remedies . They also offer bcg which is now cancelled by a great many health authorities. They were fantastic and helpful. In fact both my boys had the dr that originally started it off. Contact them. The mumps is the most expensive now. Good luck

drosophila · 18/09/2006 15:49

this is who I used . It was straight forward made an appointment went along with my red book. Had a brief chat before hand and then the jab. 12 weeks later I go back for second jab. It was over £100 I think.

spangley · 18/09/2006 16:13

Thanks Alibaldi and drosophila - these are just the sort of sites I've spents hours trawling the internet for and failing to find . I will definitely contact them, as need to find somewhere in south east. £100 sounds much more affordable. Mumsnet to the rescue!

try the jabs website www.jabs.org.uk they will email a list of clinics all over the country to you im getting my ds seperate jabs from a private docs near me and you have to pay a consulation fee but that comes off the full price of the jabe its going to be £235 all in if memory serves

nuttymum1 · 18/09/2006 16:17

iv just seen that your in the south east where abouts?

littlemadam · 18/09/2006 17:02

We used the same people as drosophilia for both DD and DS. DS was booked when there was the mumps vaccine shortage so paid seperately for that, was £200 + for all 3. We went to Hull. They do several places though, and are very professional.

Uwila · 18/09/2006 17:06

This reminds me, DS is due for his single jabs. He is 16 months. Must get on with it. I'm afraid £200+ is typical. DD had singles and I think I may avoid the bosster based on cost. I simply can't afford to do them both now, so I better do the one whose never been done.

Speaking of which, should the GP have sent us a reminder card by now??? Boy, they are slacking off on their MMR campaign.

spangley · 18/09/2006 18:56

Thanks everyone - ok, so I was getting a bit excited by the £100 thought it was too good to be true. I'll probably still go ahead with the singles as out of the 3 options that is really the only one I feel comfortable with. nuttymum, I'm in Hertfordshire, just outside the M25. The place I saw was in Swiss Cottage, N. London so hopefully there's somewhere nearer.

drosophila · 18/09/2006 20:13

Sorry I have been paying seperatly and got a bit confused.

nuttymum1 · 18/09/2006 21:08

if you email me spangley i will send you the info from jabs if you want [email protected]

FrannyandZooey · 18/09/2006 21:10

I have info for Essex if it would help anyone. It is over £100 per jab here atm.

spangley · 19/09/2006 11:59

Thanks nuttymum and Frannyandzooey - only just seen this. Yes, any info would be grateully received. I will email you nuttymum as while the jabs site is good and has hardened my resolve not to go for the triple vaccine, I'm finding a bit hard to find the info for my area (not too savvy on the net . From the Direct Health site, it looks like my nearest option is Central London.

So can you pay for the jabs separately each time? I think that would be a bit kinder on my wallet if you can

nuttymum1 · 19/09/2006 12:04

hi spangly i will have to pay £55 conusulation fee then x amount for the measles and rubella and then wait till they have 10 babies for the mumps jab as in comes in batches of 10 and pay the final anount then

WishICouldGiveUpWork · 19/09/2006 12:09

Spangley-I am in Herts too and I used the Breakspear Clinic (no time for link I am afraid) for my dd.
They are in Hemel so much easier to get to than Swiss Cottage for me.
Think all three,if you paid up front were £280-a lot of money but in IMHO worth every penny.

nogoes · 19/09/2006 12:15

Spangley, I used breakspear in Hemel too and I thought they were great, very efficient and safe.

FrannyandZooey · 19/09/2006 12:15

Spangley here are the details for Dr Parry in Essex - not sure how up to date these prices are. If they are correct now then they have gone down since we consulted him 2 years ago:

Dr Christopher Parry

Telephone: 01206 212849

e-mail: [email protected]

Consultation + Rubella vaccine 75.00
" + Measles vaccine 75.00
" + Mumps vaccine 75.00
(Incluive of non-refundable deposits of £25.00, £20.00 and £30.00, respectively)

Yes you pay separately for each vaccination, and do not have to have all 3 if you decide otherwise.

nogoes · 19/09/2006 12:18

www.breakspearmedical.com. They are based in Hemel Hempstead just outside the town centre.

Uwila · 19/09/2006 14:53

Anyone else wonder how much better off the NHS would be if they offered this service for the same fee?

spangley · 19/09/2006 15:18

Thanks for the link nogoes. I'll contact breakspear as they seem to be my closest and they've got 2 votes of confidence here so that suits me!

Thanks for the contacts for Essex FrannyandZooey, good to know if we have any problems with the Breakspear clinic.

Uwila - probably not as well off as they are now with their contracts for the triples from the drug companies - or maybe I'm too cynical?

We used Direct Health which meant going up to London each time from Brighton but was the nearest we could find at the time. That was four years ago and just after ds finished his course of jabs they started doing outreach clinics. Details for locations of outreach clinics are here if that helps.

Can't help with current prices I'm afraid. It was only £120 for the whole course when we did it! I can say though that we had no problems at all with the clinic and would recommend.

donnie · 21/09/2006 13:56

hi spangley - my dd1 had all hers at the breakspear in hemel and dd2 starts her course ( measles first) in a couple of weeks. We were impressed with them - it costs though!

Uwila · 21/09/2006 14:20

Donnie, how old is DD2? I need to arrange the single jabs for DS1 and can't decide how long to wait. He's 16 months and I am pondering holding off until 18 months.

donnie · 21/09/2006 15:11

mine is also 16 months uwila - she would have had it at 15 mths but got an ear infection!
Dd1 had the measles jab at 15 months too which seems fine , although I have heard the best time is from 18 months since the immune system has developed completely by then - but don't quote me on that. I can't see what harm it woudl do to hold off a couple more months, although GPs would rant about it!
I have , to date, had 8 letters from my GP requesting I take dd2 in for her mmr. I have informed them several times she is getting single jabs and they said they would log it on their system but the letters keep coming. What a waste of time and money!

Uwila · 21/09/2006 15:53

I think my GP has forgotten us. I haven't seen anything at all. And there's a new jab that is supposed to be offered to all under 2s. Haven't heard boo about that either. Maybe I should ring and see if we are still on the books?

shhhh · 21/09/2006 16:14

Our dd is part way through the course of single jabs. Had them done at childrens immunisation centre, st john's street manchester. Cost : Registration fee of £90 (i think)and I think each vaccination is around £90.

DD has had no problems having them seperate and we have found the cic brilliant.
